Behrend upgraded to Division 111 stature
by Jim Parachini
Collegian Sports Editor
This could very well be a banner
year for Penn State-Behrend’s
athletic program.
The biggest change this year is
that Behrend’s intercollegiate pro
gram is now affiliated as an
NCAA Division 111 school.
No longer are the Cubs a
member of the National Associa
tion of Intercollegiate Athletics
(NAIA).
Fan support plays a large part
in helping the sports program suc
ceed at any college whether the
school have an enrollment of
3,000 or 30,000.

Pam Fischer, the women’s ten
nis coach, said this year’s squad is
“the most highly motivated and
best skilled team” that she has
had since she came to Behrend
four years ago.
Although last season’s team
lacked depth and experience,
Fischer sees “a slightly tougher,
schedule as a new opportunity”
for this year’s squad. The Lady
Cubs have accepted matches in
the St. John Fischer Invitational
to be held in Rochester, N.Y. and
have already competed in the

director Herb Lauffer of the stu
dent following at soccer matches.
“The players like to see a lot of
people come out to watch the
games,” Lauffer added. “There’s
no question it helps them play
better.”
All three fall sports teams are in
action this weekend. The women’s
tennis team, coached by Pam
Fischer and having played the
University of Buffalo and Mer

University today at 3 p.m. and

achieving finalist’s positions.
Fischer analyzed her starting
team in the following manner.
Leading off in the top spot is
freshman Sharon Dollard who has
“an all around strong game.”
Kelle Carson, “a graceful and
stylish type of player” will be fill
ing in the second seed.
Junior Toni Lomley, “a gutsy
and determined- athlete” who
made the 1984 NAIA District
quarterfinals, will be in the
number three slot. Melissa Mit
chem, a freshman from Titusville
and a finalist in the McDonald’s-
Pennbriar tourney, will compete
at number four.
Owning the number five slot is
Fairview nativer Mary Beth
Grimes, who has been described
as a “strong player.” Freshman
Katie Phillips, “an aggressive and
attacking player,” will play in the
number six position.
Rounding out the singles posi

Roney, “a pure natural who pick
ed up the game on her own and
plays very well.”
Doubles matches are assigned
to sophomores Ann Weist and
Joyce Crawford. Weist won her
division in the McDonald’s-
Pennbriar tournament while
Crawford was also a finalist.
Fischer, a zealous tennis player
who competed in the number one
spot for her high school team,
received her degree in physical
education from the University of
Maryland where she participated
in field hockey and lacrosse.
She was also named to the Mid-

Cubs beat alumni 3-1
Hockenherger’s 3 goals
lift Behrend to victory
by Mark Wnertbele
Collegian Staff Writer
The Penn State-Behrend soccer
team opened their pre-season with
an impressive 3-1 victory over an
Alumni team of former Behrend
hooters. Excellent performances
were turned in by sophomore
Mike Hockenberger, scorer of all
three goals for the men’s team,
and transfer student Scott
Coykendall.
Offensively the game was
dominated by Behrend.
Hockenberger‘s first goal was
unassisted and came late in the
first half. Midway through the se
cond half a penalty was called on
the Alumni team which resulted in
another goal for Hockenberger as
he converted the following penal
ty kick to give this year’s Cubs a
2-0 advantage.

Returning sophomore Chris
Stine assisted on Hockenberger’s
third goal, which came later in the
second half, putting the Cubs up
3-0.
John Lorenz put the Alumni
squad on the board with a goal
late in the game.
Defensively the Alumni team
played very well. Terry Manering,
graduate of Penn State and cap
tain of last year’s team, thought
the speed and agility of the Alum
ni players was much better that
that of last year.
Several freshmen made the
Behrend roster such as Marty
Becker, Doug McCarthy and
Mike Cefelli. They will also be
counted on to make this a suc
cessful year for the Behrend Cubs
men’s soccer team.
