Professor Lane Honored At Spring Dinner-Dance
by Julie Reynolds
Collegian Staff Writer
As Benjamin A. Lane received
the “outstanding service” award
at the second annual Spring Din
ner Dance held at Peak ‘n’ Peek
Lodge April 13, he seemed to be
momentarily at a loss for words.
Quickly regaining his com
posure and sense of humor, he
spoke of his relationship with his
students and gave credit to the
student body for the joy and
fulfillment he experienced from
Eddie Murphy Appears At State College
by Kevin Moore
Collegian Staff Writer
Though in show business for a
relatively short period of time,
Eddie Murphy is no longer a ris
ing star. He has already been in
three blockbuster movies (four if
you count Best Defense), had a
starring role on Saturday Night
Live, and last year had a highly
successful comedy special on
Home Box Office titled
“Delirious”.
It’s impossible to name all the
characters and all of the perfor
mances that Murphy has ac
complished in the past three years.
Murphy has even “cut” an
album, but more recently he came
to State College’s Recreation Hall
as part of his “Lawd Have Mur
phy” 1985 Concert Tour. This
was a surprise to Penn State
students in two respects; first that

32 years of service to Behrend
College. He stated that it was the
life and vitality of the students
that provided him with the most
enjoyment, using his classes and
humorous remarks about living so
near the campus as examples.
“As Carolyn (Mrs. Lane) and I
sit in our living room listening to
the stillness of the night, we in
variably hear a loud yell from the
direction of the campus,” Lane
said. “This usually occurs any
time between 5 and 11 at night. It
Penn State could get Murphy, and
second that all branch campuses
were given 100 tickets.
As an audience member at the
Murphy concert, I had the chance
of a lifetime, to see Eddie Mur
phy. It was great. The opening act
for Murphy was Lilo Thomas, an
established “funk” band. The
band performed for an hour and
at 9:30 p.m., the stage was cleared
for Eddie.
As the lights went out, the
Pointer Sisters’ “Neutron Dance”
began and a movie screen ap
peared on stage. The two and one
half minute film showed Murphy
as his .various characters in televi
sion and film. The short film end
ed and the screen became cheery
red as the unmistakeable
silhouette of Eddie Murphy came
into focus. The electricity began.
The audience chanted “Eddie”.

is this life from the students that
has made my years at Behrend so
enjoyable,” he added.
The award presentation and
special remarks followed a
cocktail hour and a buffet style
dinner. Special remarks were
given by Provost Dr. John M.
Lilley and Doug Saltzman, presi
dent of the Student Programming
Council. Saltzman also presented
Lane with the “outstanding ser
vice” award. Doug Gerow, presi
dent of the Student Government
The show ran as expected with
Murphy’s unmistakeably profane
language and style of humor. The
general consensus of the audience
was that the “Delirious” concert
was better than the State College
show, but everyone enjoyed
themselves.
John Anderson, fourth
semester mathematics, said, “It
was funny, and I’m glad I went,
but with hindsight I wouldn’t pay
Sl6 given the chance again.”
According to an article that ap
peared in the Collegian Magazine,
a University Concert Committee
member said, “I hope Murphy
gives us a profit, because we slap
ped down $55,000 for him.”
Minus the overhead, Eddie Mur
phy was well rewarded for a 75
minute workout.
