We Can Aid In
Restoration Of Life
As you sit at your dinner table tonight you probably will
not think twice about the food that is placed in front of
you, and as you slip into your bed tonight you probably
will not give a second thought about waking up tomorrow
morning alive and healthy.
Yet, there are probably few who do not know that there
are thousands of people starving to death each day in
Ethiopia. Mothers and fathers who watch their babies die
in their arms and husbands who can only stand helpless as
their wives die alongside their children.
As we go on living our sheltered lives thinking how tight
our money is getting, there are people whose only concern
is holding on for one more day.
It is time for us to open our eyes and take a stand. We
can sit in front of our television sets each night disgusted as
we hear of a brutal slaying or mass murder and mumble
such questions as “What is this world coming to?” or
“What is wrong with people today?”
Yet, we conveniently ignore the fact that members of our
species are starving to death. What is wrong with people to
day? Ignorance frees us from responsibilty, but we just
can’t ignore the situation any longer. People are dying and
we have the opportunity to do something about it. As terri
ble as the situation is, I think God is sending us a message
through it and is giving us the chance to restore some
respect in mankind.
A friend once said that it didn’t bother him that three
million people are going to starve to death in 1985. What
bothered him was that we’re going to sit in front of our
television sets and watch it happen!
It is time we stopped thinking of these masses as “them”
and started thinking of them as “us”. What kind of man
turns his back on his brother? True, with a situation this
widespread, one person can hardly make a difference, but
if we ban together we can do something. We are wor
thwhile and as one we are invincible. We can help in the
making of a miracle - the miracle of restoring life.
Just think, if each of us donated one dollar, we would be
able to help sustain life. Only God can bring the rain for
the crops, but only we can bring the funds. So much has
been done, but so much more can be done.
By myself, I can’t make much difference in the situation,
but together, as a nation, as a people, we can really help. It
is time we started to take responsibilty for and help our
brothers and sisters. How can we let them suffer so terrible
when we can do so much?
As sung by John Denver:
“It’s about time we begin it, to turn the world around;
it’s about time we start to make it, the dream we’ve always
known. It’s about time we start to live it, the Family of
Man; it’s about time, it’s about changes, and it’s about
time. It’s about peace and it’s about plenty, and it’s about
time; it’s about you and me together, and it’s about
time...”

Marxist Brainwashing
Dear Editor:
Last Saturday morning, I was
exposed to a sickening display of
anti-American behavior. Not only
was this display on national net
work television, but it was
directed towards influencing the
country’s young.
Support Needed For
BeHrend’s First Gender
Studies Course
To the editor:
Next fall, Behrend students will
be given the opportunity to enroll
in this campus’ first gender
studies course. Dr. Diana Hume
George will offer English 194, a
survey of women writers of all
major genders. The course
satisfies a humanities require
ment, or counts as an elective for
baccalaureate degree
requirements.
Because this course is the first
of its kind at Behrend, its enroll
ment will help to determine
whether or not another Women’s
Studies course is ever offered here

Sees
I was horrified when I switched
the television on and saw an un
paralleled showing of com
munistic behavior. I saw a com
mune where income was
distributed equally. Each member
had a particular job. There was no
free choice. All decisions were
again. There are no prerequisites
for this course, and it’s open to all
male and female students. The
course will provide a unique op
portunity to experience one of
Behrend’s most dynamic and
challenging professors while stu
dying writers too often overlook
ed by other English classes.
Your support of this course en
sures the future of others of its
kind at Behrend. Women have an
equal place on this campus, and
should share a more equal place in
its curriculum.
Sincerely,
Kim Krynock

“Smurfs” As
made by a supreme leader, known
as Papa.
This society was dosed off
from the rest of the world. There
were no incentives to work hard
or get ahead. The members of this
community were probably content
to live here only because they were
not permitted to leave (kind of
reminds me of the Soviet Union).
This oppressed society is none
other than the Smurfs.
Our youngsters look up to these
radical Marxists, and are gradual
ly turning away from capitalism
and free market systems.
Weren’t the Smurfs created in
Brazil (which is, by the way, near
Cuba)? Some of Castro’s hen
chman probably forced a helpless
Brazilian artist to create these
devious characters.
How long can we stand for
this?! I am a red-blooded
American and I refuse to have this
type of blatant Communism in my
home. I urge you to write your
Congressman and stop this evil in
fluence from infiltrating the
minds of our young! STOP
THESE SMURFS, it’s the
American thing to do.
Sincerely,
Daniel H. Glasser
