As students, our views and opi

Senate provide a channel to voice
our views.
The University^Faculty Senate
is a vital part of the universitys; it
determines curricular guidelines
that include the approval of
course modifications and faculty
issues.
Students of the commonwealth
campuses and the Behrend Col
lege will hold elections Apr.
10-11. Elections for Student
Representatives to the University
Faculty Senate will also occur on
these dates. Ten representatives
will be from the 10 colleges at
University Park, four will be
graduate student representatives,
and three will be representing the
commonwealth campuses, which
includes Behrend College.
Each of these 17 student
representatives will have one full
vote along with the faculty
members of the University Facul
ty Senate. Consequently, the Stu
dent Representatives’ position
honored for having contributed
their time and energy to the bet
terment of their club or organiza
tion, or simply on an academic
basis.
The academic awards are divid
ed into three categories. The first
is the Walker Award, which is
given to juniors or seniors with
outstanding grades.

College English Association in
Philadelphia on Mar. 15.
“The purpose of the paper was
to convince teachers to teach
students to write for an audience
other than the instructor,”
Podolsky explained, “...a ‘real’
audience.” She said she has
already used this technique with
one of her classes to gather data
for an instructor who is doing
research. “The students did real
work,” she added.
Podolsky, who is a member
herself, explained that the annual
conference of the Pennsylvania
College English Association “is
an opportunity for college
teachers to share professional
knowledge.” Research findings
and teaching techniques are also
discussed, she continued, “but,

The second award is the Turn
bull Award. This award is
presented to students who have
given outstanding service to the
college.
The third academic award that
is given out is the Kochel Award.
This award is given to students
who have shown both outstanding
service to the college and have
you have to be a member to pre
sent a paper.”
Podolsky said, “Business
writing is a new field of research
and study.” The rationale behind
this new awareness stems from
“complaints by employers that
people don’t write well,” she
noted. The “interest is tied to the
student’s professional interest,”
she added.
In addition to being a member
of the Pennsylvania College
English Association, Podolsky is
chairperson of the Scholarship
and Awards Committee and holds
a position on the University
Senate. Before coming to Behrend
to teach freshman composition,
business writing, and humanities
classes, she taught English for five
years at Mercyhurst Preparatory
School.
Representative to the University
Faculty Senate.
What qualifications does Doug
possess that he believes make him
eligible for the position? “I feel
that -my involvement with the
Council of Branch Campus Stu
dent Governments (COBCSG) for
two years combined with my ex
perience in student government
have resulted in an understanding
on my part of the all-important
university bureaucracy. Also, as a
commonwealth campus and
Behrend College student, I have a
vested interest in our concerns and
can represent them effectively.”
At the time of voting, students
at Behrend will vote to select three
of the 12 candidates located at
branch campuses during the Stu
dent Government Elections.
Resumes of the other candidates
will be available at the voting
booths as well as posted on cam
