Behrend Cubs Close Out Long Season
by Dan Gaston
Collegian Staff Writer
The Behrend basketball team
closed out its season on a losing
note with a 92-51 loss to
Waynesburg in the opening round
of the NAIA District 18 playoffs
held Mar. 1. With that loss,
Coach Zimmerman and his Cubs
finished out the season at 5-23
overall.
The Cubs started out the season
strong but ended up losing 15 out
of their last 17 games. Among the
most recent games played,
Behrend lost to Mercyhurst,
Geneva, and Waynesburg. They
managed to pull out a win against
Point Park.

Over the years intramural
sports have been the center of stu
dent activity. Intramural sports
and similar functions such as the
Mice Capades or Rat Games have
the highest attendance of any
campus activity.
The present school year has
been a good year for intramurals.
According to Intramural Director
Duane Crider, overall participa
tion in the intramural program is
up by 7.6 percent over last year
despite the fact that female par
ticipation is half of what is was
last year.
“I would like to encourage all
females to become more actively
involved in the intramurals. En
tries are available in Erie Hall and
from resident assistants. Ultimate
frisbee, tennis, badminton, and
the MUDRUN ‘B5 would be ex
cellent activities for those females
interested in activities for the spr
ing semester,” said Crider.
Bombardment, a newcomer to
the Penn State-Behrend in
tramural program, has been a
huge success. It was first introduc
ed as a tension reliever before

Geneva College. Geneva came in
to the game 15-9 overall and rank
ed third in District 18 in scoring.
Geneva lived up to their billing by
bitting 55 percent of their shots
and dropping the Cubs by a 79-65
count.
Although Geneva was a much
taller and quicker team and prov
ed it by scoring 22 of their points
via the fastbreak, Behrend hustled
the whole game and made it in
teresting .
Coach Zimmerman was pleased
with his squad’s performance. “If
you look at it on paper we pro
bably have no business being on
the floor with them. But our kids
worked their tails off. It would

The spring semester is packed
with various intramurals. Coming
events include: fast-pitch softball,
one of the most competitive spr
ing events; ultimate frisbee, a
rapidly growing nationwide sport;
tennis and badminton, with com
petition for men and women
(singles and doubles); and finally,
back by demand will be outdoor
basketball, with teams consisting
of recreational and varsity
players. Games will be played on
the courts adjacent to Perry Hall.
One of the new events to take
place this spring is a kickball tour
nament. “I think students will en
joy this playground game. Like
bombardment it will be a tension
reliever before finals week,”
noted Crider.
Another activity being held this
spring is the 10K MUDRUN ‘B5
on Apr. 20. The MUDRUN is a
6.2-nodle race that will take place
on the intramural cross-country
trail. This was postponed last fall.
The winning male and female stu
dent will receive an intramural

Behrend snapped a five-game
losing streak by pulling out a nar
row 66-65 win over Point Park.
Led by Bob Mudger’s 16 point
performance and 15 points from
Ed Malinowski, the Cubs were
never seriously challenged until
the very end.
Behrend wasn’t as fortunate
with a talented Mercyhurst squad.

Zimmerman’s Cubs’ last game
was in the opening round playoffs
against powerful Waynesburg.
Waynesburg outclassed Behrend
by dealing them a convincing
92-51 loss. Behrend got a dozen
points from Gary Manuel and 10
from Mike Siggins in a losing
effort.
Coach Zimmerman spoke last
week about his up and down
season., Although not satisfied
with his team’s record, he was
happy with his squad’s attitude
and effort. He agreed that it is dif
ficult to coach a team when he
doesn’t know who will be playing
from one day to the next.
Zimmerman had troubles with
injuries and eligibility this year.
He was dealt a severe blow when
he lost Gomiak and Blanks, two
of his original five. Zimmerman
was pleased with the way his team
played together throughout the
season.
As for next season’s goals,
Coach Zimmerman said he would
like to have the same intensity as
this year. He would also like to see
the same group finish the season
that started it. In order to do this,
he said he needs to keep free from
ineligiblity and injuries.

relative level and a less challeng
ing course, however the same
awards will be given to the win
ners of the event.
The winners of the 10k event,
who will also be crowned the in
tramurals champions (because
that event could not be held in the
fall) will receive trophies and the
top three finishers in each age
group will receive ribbons. The
age groups are 12 and under,
13-15, 16-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49,
and 50 and over.
Crider is confident that the
event will continue to be suc
cessful. “I know we’ll have alot of
student participation and this year
I’m hoping for 40 to 50 students,”
he says.
The $6 entry fee for both races
will provide the runner with a race
shirt and the chance to be an
award winner. An entry form is
available below, at Erie Hall or at
the RUB desk.
Forms must be returned by
, Apr. 13 to either Duane Crider or
Julie Espin, the Athletics
secretary located in Erie Hall.
With the weather improving, it
is time to start training for the
tough but rewarding “MUDRUN
’85.”
