The four books, Algebra and Trigonometry, Col lege Algebra, Precalculus, and Trigonometry were published in January, and will be used for Behrend math courses five and six. In addition to the four texts, supplemental instructor’s guides and solutions guides were written by math instructors Meredythe Burrows and Dianna Zook. Larson, after earning his Ph.D in Mathematics from the Univer sity of Colorado, came to Galletta Introduces Computer Science Text by Barrett Parker Collegian Staff Writer Dennis Galletta, instructor of recently had a Cobol tex tbook published. COBOL with an Emphasis 'on Structured Pro gram Design took Galletta two years (mainly on nights and weekends) to publish. Of the 7,500 copies initially printed, 270 copies have already been sold bas ed only on drafts sent to potential buyers. Galletta comments,“(We ex-, pect) the bulk of the sales in July Penn State Behrend Collegia Behrend in 1970: In 1973, he started writing calculus texts and was later joined by Hostetler in 1975. Larson comments, “We had written three manuscripts for the calculus texts, each 1,000 to 1,500 typed pages and the publisher simply turned them down.” In 1976 they tried again with the assistance of math instructor David Heyd who wrote all of the problems and their solutions. Calculus Ist Edition eventually came out in 1979, and alhougb it was not an “instant success,’’ Larson says, “it did well for a first time publication.” They’ve published eight books since then including Mathematics for Everyday Living, Brief Dennis Galletta, MIS Instructor STATION ROAD, ERIE, PA 16563 Calculus with Applications , and Calculus 2nd Edition. Calculus Second Edition is currently the third* best selling colli calculus text and controls ten percent of the market, which consists of ap proximately forty different authors. Close to one-third of all students in the Penn State system that take calculus use Larson and Hostetler’s book, even though it is not used at University Park. Larson and Hostetler, with the help of their colleagues (Heyd, Zook, and Burrows) and several students, will be busy for the next few years writing new books and revising old ones. Larson explains, “Each group of texts is revised in a four year continued on page 4 or August. Prentice-Hall pro jected (the sales of) 10,000 copies per year.” Prentice-Hall’s top books sell-about 70,000 per year. A graduate of Gannon Univer sity and a Ph.D candidate at the University of Minnesota, Galletta has been teaching at Behrend since 1978. Other than COBOL , and the Instructor’s Manual to COBOL , he has had an article printed in Proceeding of the Se cond International Conference on Informative Systems in conjunc continned on page 3 Reagan Budget May Shut Out 36% of P.S.U. Students by Julie Reynolds Collegian Staff Writer If President Reagan passes his new budget, 36 percent of Penn State students will not receive guaranteed student loans. His proposal to limit student loans to a maximum of $4,000 a year, and cut loans to students whose parents’ combined income is over $32,000 a year may keep over one third of Penn State students from returning to school. The Undergraduate Student Government. at University Park has become actively involved in opposing the budget proposal. A' meeting was held at University Park Feb. 9 and student govern ment representatives from all Penn State branch campuses were asked to set up lobbying cam paigns and petitions at their respective campuses. Will Kappa Delta Rho Chapter Be Formed at Behrend? by Greg Rathbun Collegian Staff Writer Kappa Delta Rho (KDR), a new service fraternity is being formed at Behrend College with the help of Tim Carley. Carley, a 4th semester business major said, “We are a service fraternity, but we do have social activities. Our motto is to be the best fraternity on campus and to do it with class.” Kappa Delta Rho was establish ed at Middlebury College in 1904. In order to have an impact, we need students from all the branches of Penn State to write to the state and federal legislature.” Gerow states that the branch campuses play a major role because what is needed is a lot of letters from all areas of the Penn State system, rather than from one concentrated area. Says Gerow, “A unified effort of University Park and branch campuses is what can make this program a success. The goal of the campaign is to make students aware of what they can do to help and get students all across the state to write letters to the legislators.” University Park and will soon have a colony at Behrend. Donald Stohl, the executive director of KDR, thinks that the Behrend col ony will become a provisional chapter with 35 people by the spr ing of 1986. The Behrend colony will probably be called Alpha Phi. Carley recently called a meeting where the future brothers elected officers and discussed upcoming events. Carley ran unopposed for president; Mark Stanley, second semester engineering major, won continued on page 3
