DECEMBER 14, 1984 Women’s Basketball Opens Season by Tammie Starcher Collegian Sports Writer There was only one thing wrong with Behrend’s first Women’s Basketball tournament - the Lady Cubs didn’t win. Behrend came in fourth place for the two-day tour nament as Malone College took the championship by defeating Seton Hill, 89-77. Behrend was paced by Sue Eichel’s 16 points, eight of which she scored at the start of the second half. Amy Anderson played a 14 point first half to give Malone a 47-32 lead at halftime. Other Malone players in double figures were Janie Eibel with 14, and Sherrie Gifford with ten. - Seton Hill also had four players in double figures as Lynnette Opel and Erin Monahan bucketed 16 points each. Kim McDowell ended with 12 and Kia Sander tossed in ten points. Earlier in the tournament, Buf falo State scored 98 points to cap ture a third place position. Buf falo State’s Lorraine Lynch tossed a tournament record 28 points. Diane Ellis contributed 18, Cyn thia Walker had 14 and K. O’Callaghan scored 12. Kathy Ott was the lone Cub in double figures as she scored 14 points in a losing effort. Action the first night saw Malone defeat Buffalo State 87-63 ' 4 ■* !'#'*'%£' ~-*, s \ -\\ '"B|^"-'/ . Tammy Bailey led the way with 14, followed closely by Janie Eibel’s 13 and Jan Koster’s 12. Diane Ellis had 16 and Lorraine Lynch 13 for Buf falo State. Later in the tournament, Seton Hill gained a chance at the cham pionship with a 61-51 victory over Behrend. Kathy Ott led all scorers with 19 points and Toni Lumley tossed in 13 for the Lady Cubs. Seton Hill featured Kim McDowell’s 14 points and 12 points each for Jan Koster and Janie Eibel. All tournament honors went to Malone’s Amy Anderson, Tammy Bailey, Janie Eibel, Buffalo State’s Diane Ellis, and Seton Hill’s freshman Nancy Waldschmidt. Behrend, a young and inex perienced team, played one good half for the tournament. They played nervously without Mindy and Missy Stasenko and tried too hard to make up for their absence. The Lady Cubs “have their work cut out for them but are very coachable” according to Coach Karin Sobotta. Not a tall team, they have to make up for the lack of height with quickness. Right now, improving is their main goal and they will, because they are giving 100 percent of their effort on the court. H -* •4- - - *Ssi ■ 5^ ißr '*“ ' v *■' ■; ' ' , ..
