Anderson Gives His View of Modern Politics
by Kevin Moore
Collegian Staff Writer
On Oct. 31, former Presidential
candidate John B. Anderson
presented a political science lec
ture as part of the Penn State-
Behrend Cultural Series.
Mr. Anderson spoke of the con
temporary problems in politics.
His major areas of concern were
the adverse effects of the media
and special interest groups on
politics. “Campaigns should rely
on public support instead of that
from special interest groups,”
said Anderson.
Prior to his lecture, Anderson
attended a press conference in the
Memorial Room of the Ad
ministration Building. At the con
ference he stated his support for
the Democratic ticket, stating
that, “Mondale is a problem
solver.” He also noted that Fer
raro has had a “net positve effect
on the democratic campaign.” He
pointed out that women could
make or break the election. They
make up 56 percent of the voting
public.
In an interview following the
press conference Anderson spoke
about various topics. The follow
ing is an excerpt from the inter
view with a Collegian staff writer.
Kevin: “Mr. Anderson, in your
estimation, where has the Liberal
Republican wing gone?”
Anderson: “Well, I think it is
absolutely gone. I was reading a
piece about the Percy-Simon race
this morning. Charles Percy warn
ed in 1975, that if the Republican
party nominated Ronald Reagan
for President in 1976, that we
would see the end of the
Republican party as it has
previously existed. Five years
later, in 1980, he was nominated
and four years later in 1984, wae
have seen the most conservative
administration since Calvin
Coolodge, and I can’t understand
how any so-called moderate or
liberal republican feels that the
party represents them.”
“The party is deeply involved in
telling women when to bear
children and children how and
when to pray in the classroom.
It’s incredible to see what they
have done to distort Republican
principles. They have turned
down women’s rights and refused
to endorse ERA after 40 years of
support for that measure. There is
a scintilla of evidence remining
that the Republican Party is
nothing more than an ultfa
conservtive, ultra-right politival
group that has no tolerance what
soever, for the views of the so
called moderates and liberals.”
Kevin: “Along those lines do
you feel that our present political
structure needs revamping?”
Anderson: “I do. I think wae
need a three party system. I think
that the two parties are steadily
decomposing and have become
very weak. I usually refer to it by
saying that instead of having a
hollowed two party system, we
have a ‘hollowed out’ two party
system.”
“They are simply corporate
shells with no substance! They
have turned over the business of
fund raising for the federal level
races to Political Action Commit
tees (PAC’s). Neither party suffi
ciently represents distinctive,
clearly identifiable public
philosophies so that people know
when they go to vote for can
didates, that those candidates are
going to be for these principles,
policies, and programs.”

“It’s every man for himself!
The party has become a means of
access to the ballot, rather than
what a party should serve and that
is to repesent clearly identifiable

a particular way of addressing
problems at the governing level.”
While taking Anderson to the
airport he talked about relaxation
and physical conditioning. He ex
pressed his fatigue from the recent
months of campaigning. After
the election he said he intends to
get back into his morning routine
of swimming 50 laps. “But first,”
he said, “vacationing time to
think and time to relax is in
order.”

parking money is down
significantly this year as com

Perhaps this is being caused by the
parking shortage and the hesita

cars.
However, if you do receive a
ticket, be assured that the money
is used at our campus and is not
just put into statewide budgets.
“We have been wanting a new
lot for years, but the need has
become more acute over the last
three to four years with Behrend’s
expansion,” said Dohn Har
