EPTEMBER 27, 1984 "You" Can Come Out of This by Robbie Colville Collegian Sports Writer On Sept. 4, playing in front of a large crowd, the Behrend Cubs met 16th ranked Gannon Univer sity in a home soccer match. The Cubs came out immediately and displayed some fine action, but found it difficult to gain control over a powerful and skilled Gan non team. Gannon's Frank Brown was the first to stab Behrend, with a goal midway through the first period. Behrend scrappled through the rest of the period, as a strong defensive back of four refused to allow Gannon another goal in the first period. The defensive back consisted of Todd Lindenmuth, Steve Lossing, Jeff Zastawniak, and Mike Berg. Behrend's Larry Guenther and Dave Kun both had good days as prominent defensive forces in the goal. "My hat is off to them, they. all did a great job for us all day," said head coach Lauffer. But Behrend's frontline had difficulties controlling the ball and maintaining accurate plays in midfield. "We have some con fidence factors there, but, we're very young," said Lauffer, "many of our players have had very little collegiate experience." Behrend plays seven freshmen in starting positions. As the second period began, Behrend took the field with an energetic fervor, but soon, as in the first period, Gannon displayed its strength and took control. As Gannon controlled, Behrend clawed to gain the upper hand. "Today we saw a team (Gannon) doing what we want to do," said Lauffer, "We were outmanned by a team with superior skill and size ... it's a tough lesson to learn." Hans Van Rheener kicked one in for Gannon early in the second period. Hans' brother, Rob Van Rheener later stuck the Cubs for another goal, and later still Gorge Cafeteria 11-2 Mon.-Fri. Without them Gannon is a different ball club, still very good, very solid, but very dif ferent," said Lauffer. Commenting on the outstan ding attendance, the Behrend head coach said "The players, as well as myself appreciated the large turnout, and commend the fans on their enthusiasm. We en joy their involvement, and they got to see a very exciting match today." Said Lauffer, "You can come out of this game with a bad at titude, or you can do something with- what you've learned. There are some positive things out there that I think we should feel good about."
