PAGE 10 Lady Cubs Looking to Win by Tammie Starcher Collegian Sports Writer The women's tennis team, still searching for their initial victory, suffered two tough losses last week. On Sept. 18, the Lady Cubs faced an experienced Gannon team. They lost a match 9-0 and played as if their minds were somewhere else. Coach Pam Fischer said they "just couldn't pull out of the men tal slump." The defeated attitude that hit the Lady Cubs was gone, however, on Sept. 20. Although they lost 4-5 to a Westminster team with a lot of depth and ex perience, the women played a match completely op posite of the match they played against Gannon. The Behrend women played some super individual matches. In the second singles match, Behrend sophomore Kim Hoover, using a steady round stroke gain, beat Kristen Leßombardo 6-1, 6-4. Also in singles play, sophomore Toni Lumley, in her first season with the Cubs, was outstanding against Westminister veteran Sue Sipple. In doubles action, Kelly Courson and Toni Lumley teamed up in a hard serving, awesome, at tacking game. The Cubs were 6-0, 6-4 victors in the first doubles match against Westminster's Heather Swank and Kristen Leßombardo. In the second doubles match, Behrend's Kim Hoover and Jean DiDonato, played a steady game by working together and covering the entire court. They defeated Becky Gladden and Kathy Travers, 6-3, 4-6, 7-5. With these two losses against Gannon and Westminster, the Lady Cubs fall to 0-6 for the season and 0-1 in their conference. Next week, however, is an important week for the women. The coming match against Theil is one of three conference matches the Cubs have on the schedule for the next week. Although they lost previously 6-3 to Thiel, Coach Fisher says, "Personnel changes since the last match may make a crucial difference." The Lady Cubs appreciate any support the Behrend students can give, so come out and cheer them on to victory. 6 p m 6 p.m. 10 am 6 p.m. 6 p.m. 30 Gannon A 1 Westminster H 3 NAIA District #lB 6 Villa Maria A Allegheny 8 Thiel A I i li.F I'RF.LSI 1111,1 ill II) N 1 1111NIM. 11\111 I\l 1111H1\ PLR Pl.k.os. Those com peting in the tournament were Carnegie Mellon U., Robert Morris College, California University of Pennsylvania, and Penn State-Behrend College. Behrend's first game was against Robert Morris on the 14th in which they lost 2-0. Junior Larry Guenther started in the goal and did not allow a goal in the first half. The half ended in a scoreless tie. Robert Morris got their first goal 20 minutes into the se cond half on an unassisted breakaway by freshman Paul Schauvin. With seven minutes left in the game, Behrend brought the ball across the midfield. Robert Morris' Bruce Lewis intercepted a pass and scored another unassisted breakaway to lead 2-0. Behrend outshot Robert Morris 14-12, and led in corner kicks 8-5. Robert Morris increased their record to 3-0, while Behrend dropped to 0-3. In the consolation game on Sunday versus California University of Pa., Behrend came out on top 4-0. Coach Herb Lanffer started freshman Dave Kun in goal. Kun played 75 minutes of scoreless soccer. Behrend's first goal came early in the second half on a penalty kick by freshman Chris Stine, his first collegiate goal. Fifteen minutes into the half Mike Hockenberger scored, assisted by Terry Mannering. Mannering scored seven minutes later on a penalty kick. Joe Kushon scored the fourth goal just two minutes later. The game dropped California's record to 0-2 and gave Behrend their first win. Behrend again outshot their opponent 21-7 and led in cor ner kicks 13-0. Coach Lauffer said, "The win was due to strong play from the bench by three good freshmen, Steve Stegrnan, who tended goal for the last 15 minutes, Dave Titley, who played some 30 minutes and really sparked the defensive play, and forward Mike Gourlias, who offensively sparked the team with good critical passes and aggressiveness to the ball." Behrend took third place in the tournament with the win over California University of Pa. Upcoming soccer games include: Edinboro, home on October 2; St. Vincent, home on October 6; and Pitt-Bradford, home on October 10. T-Shirt Sale Behrend Athletics is conducting and blue.
