THE BEHREND COLLEGIAN Eastwood Meets Hitchcock "Tightrope" By: That Wawro Collegian News Editor Clint Eastwood is by far one of today's biggest box office draws. Any film that has his name on it is bound to do well. Well, let me rephrase that! any Dirty Harry film that has his name on it is bound to do well. Unfortunately for Eastwood and his fans, his so-called non- Dirty Harry films have not done so well. Superb films such as "Play Misty for Me," "Honkytont Man," and Eastwood's personal favorite "Bronco Billy," have fallen into box office oblivion because they did not feature Harry Callaghan. I fear that "Tightrope" will most likely fall into this category, not because it is a bad film but because it is a psychological thriller rather than a shoot-em-up. In "Tightrope," Eastwood plays a tough homicide cop, but he is a different kind of tough cop. He is a cop who is also a human being and not a vigilant super-hero with a large gun. The story, set in New Orleans, is about Wes Block, a homicide cop on the trail of a sadistic killer. Block is different from Harry Callaghan in many ways. The most prevelant is Block's per sonality. Most striking of all is the fact that he is a divorced father who has custody of his two char ming daughters and a horde of many dogs. While he is a tough cop he is a weak man. He is very insecure and troubled about his life and job. Block deals with his insecurity by visiting the sleazy French Quarter of New Orleans nightly where he enjoys handcuffing prostitutes before having sex with them. "Tightrope" is more of a character study of a troubled cop than anything else. Don't get the wrong impres- "Attention Commuter Car Drivers" If interested in starting a carpool, leave Name, Address, Ph. Commuter Council sion, "Tightrope" is a fast paced action film but instead of focusing on the violence of the Dirty Harry films, it focuses on the action of Block's mind in dealing with his personal and professional problems. The plot is basically this: A murderer with a penchant for disguises, is mutilating women in the French Quarter district. Most of the women are pro stitutes specializing in S and M. The killer handcuffs his victims and after raping them, he kills them. Block's familiarity with the Quarter becomes quite evident in the course of his investigations. He must investigate murders that have occurred in the places that he haunts during his off duty hours. The killer discovers that one of the women he murdered was "in volved with" Block and begins to tail him. Every time Block employs a prostitute the killer follows her and murders her. Block begins to realize that he has something frighteningly in common with the killer and is forced to reevaluate himself and his questionable life style. "All of us have a dark side that we must keep under control" a character in the film tells Block, "we are forced to constantly walk a tightrope between the dark and the light." Instrumental in Block's reevaluation is the head of the local rape prevention center played by veteran actress Genevieve Bujold. Bujold gives Block a steady medium through which he can straighten out his life. Block eventually becomes in- PAGE FIVE timate with her (without the nand cuffs of course). Through "Tightrope," viewers are treated to a trip inside a troubled and jaded cop's mind. In "Tightrope," Eastwood has a chance to show off his complete emotional range, he laughs, wor ries, loves, and° even cries. Block's mind and feelings are projected onto the screen produc ing a sympathetic character that can be easily identified with. Director Richard Tuggle, with the help of Block's adorable daughter's (one of whom is ac tually Eastwood's daughter) and five mangy dogs, creates a hero that is a person not a bronze statue. Don't let the fact that "Tightrope" is a psychological thriller scare you away. Eastwood is still Eastwood, the only dif ference is that Tuggle has added a touch of Hitchcock to Eastwood's style and the result is a suspenseful thriller that will not only keep you on the edge of your seat but will also give you something to think about. If you're in the mood to be frightened without being grossed out, "Tightrope" is the movie to see. "Tightrope" is rated "R" for language and sexual content. P.S. A note of hope for all you Dirty Harry fans.
