Behrend Collegian VOLUME XXXIII NO, 1 High-Tech and High-Rises for Fall 'B5 By: Kevin Moore Collegian Staff Writer As the world looks forward to the future, so does Penn State- Behrend. The PSB community is once again stretching its prover bial arms with expansion within the areas of education and residential life. With an ever increasing enroll ment at Penn State-Behrend, comes a high demand for more facilities to which northwestern Pennsylvania has responded generously. On May 25 University President Dr. Bryce Jordan overturned a shovel of earth which symbolized the commencement of the con struction of the Hammermill and Zurn buildings. This new complex has been designed to house science, engineering, business and technology facilities. The Hammermill Building will contain the new General Electric Computer Center, laboratories, In the Beginning Penn State classrooms and faculty office space, while the Zurn Building will be the central location of the engineering laboratories and technological studies. Dr. Jordan stated that "The groundbreaking symbolizes the partnership of Penn State with diverse industries of Northwestern - Pennsylvania." The establishment of the Ham mermill and Zurn buildings has been made possible ' mostly through the generosity of The Hammermill Foundation, Zurn Industries Inc., and The Zurn Family. The General Electric Foundation has contributed funds for the new General Electric Com puter Center which will be located in the Hammermill Building. These new high-tech buildings will be located between the Behrend and Nick buildings on the northwest side of campus. The Hammermill and Zurn buildings will be joined by a central lobby. On the south side of the Cultural Series Insert Inside STATION ROAD, ERIE, PA. 16563 Behrend campus, other crews are busy with the construction of the new student apartment buildings. There will be six apartment buildings with eight apartments in each. The apartments will have two bedrooms, a kitchen and a living room-lounge area and will house four residents. One of the apartment buildings will be completely accessible to handicapped students. The new housing complex will be located behind Lawrence and Dobbins halls on the south side of campus. According to PSB Provost Dr. John M. Lilley, hundreds of students are turned away from Behrend each year because of in- SEPTEMBER 14, 1984 adequate housing. When all of the buildings have been completed there will be housing for nearly half of the school's 2000 students. Cost for the apartment complex has been set at $4 million and fun ding has been provided by the University. Both the Hammermill-Zurn complex and the new apartments will be ready for student use in the fall of 1985. y , ~.
