Same Old Style, Plenty Of New Smiles!
By Claire DeSantis
The end of the year is approaching and for the first time since this
abominable winter began, (was it ten or eleven months ago?) I feel
that spring is in the• air - and in the Collegian office.
I am watching as peoples' moods begin to change with the
seasons. Although the pace is twice as fast at this time of the year
than it was during, say, February (Boring - with an upper-case "B")
the days go much more quickly now.
Suddenly, the Collegian office is not what it used to be. The sun
shine brings people out of the woodwork. Most of us have our noses
buried in books in an effort to make it all the way to the end of this
semester with at least passing grades, but the relief when the tests are
done-whether we have done well on them or not - is evident. The
radio is on more frequently. Even though we only have AM, the
music in enlivening. There are more notes on my door, more absurd
pictures, more comments about our newspaper, more of just about
everything. And now that Dann Johns has been elected SGA Presi
dent, Doug Saltzman's eyebrows are less furrowed than they used to
be. Even Risa has been in a pretty good mood lately. I think, though,
that it has more to do with her upcoming trip to Nationals for bowl
ing, than it does with the end of the year.
Whatever the reasons for the happier faces I've been seeing, it's
wonderful. I can't help but wonder; though, why we stay in this
climate all year around when we could live in Florida and be in a bet
ter mood all the time. It must be great to walk out on your patio
nearly every single morning- throughout the whole year - and not ac
quire frostbite. I guess there has to be a catch, though, right?
For those of you who read this column frequently, you know that
every month or so I write one of these columns where I filter out all
of the things that have been running through my mind. This is exact
ly one of those columns. I find that it does me plenty of good every
now and then to forget all of the rules about transitions and con
tinuity that I learned in all of those English classes. Sometimes it's
better to just put your words on paper and forget the rules. This
editorial is a case in point. But there is some business at hand, and
it's about time I got to it. (Isn't this sort of like getting a letter from a
friend?)
Once again, it is time to choose an editor for the Collegian. There
is an article that discusses the process by which this is done on page
five of this issue. It is a demanding job, but certainly a worthwhile
one.
The Collegian has grown by leaps and bounds this year, I feel.
Every step has been tough, but we wanted a newspaper that could
grow with this institution and give students an opportunity to
publish their opinions. I think that we have had more guest editorials
this year than in any of the three years I've worked for this
newspaper. This is indicative to me that more students are not only
interested in expressing their feelings, but in the various issues at
hand around the college, the country and the world.
The editor's job will continue to grow and change next year. It is
an opportunity to sharpen your writing and editing skills. It is a
chance to meet students with opinions that you would never have ex
perienced had you not been involved with an organization such as
this. More importantly, it is an opportunity to see Behrend College
through the eyes of productive, dynamic "doer" rather than a stu
dent that just attends class and leaves.
I would be willing to talk with anyone that is interested in this
position at their convenience. Stop in the Collegian office. We can
discuss the finer points of editing a college newspaper. Actually, we
can talk about anything you'd like to talk about.
If you are interested in journalism, give all of this some considera
tion. It really is a unique opportunity.

Since a great majority of those
surveyed believe that the Bible is
one of God's ways to com
municate to us, we would like to
present God's answers to some of
these questions as found in the Bi
ble. In response to question
number one, Jesus states that the
reason he came was to give us a
full and happy life: "I came that
they might have life and have it
more abundantly" (John 10:10).
However, we can't experience the
life that God intends for us
because: "Your sins have
separated you from your God"
(Isaiah 59:2). Please _understand
that this means all people: "All
have sinned and fall short of the
glory of God" (Romans 3:23).
God has taken the first step to
bridge the separation we have
crated by our sin: "But God
demonstrates his love for. us in
that while we were yet sinners,
Christ died for us to bring us to
God" (Romans 5:8). Even though

illumination tour of the beautiful Behrend College
before returning to the Administration Building.
If these tours don't attract technical students to
Behrend, I don't know what will. Behrend College
has many things to offer students majoring in pro
grams other than Liberal Arts.
The soon to be built Hammermill Building will
have classrooms, offices, and labs for science,
engineering and technology students, faculty and
equipment. Those of us who are Liberal Arts
students may need a pass to gain access into the
building!
There is an emphasis put on technological majors
at Behrend. It seems as though all funding is given to
provide better facilities and benefits for
technological students. Liberal Arts programs are
somewhat ignored at this college.
I reili7P that technology is the future, however, we
cannot put aside the ability to read and write.
I would like to made a prediction for what
Behrend College will be like in ten or 15 years.
Behrend College in the future will be renamed to
Behrend Institute of Technology and all students will
be taught by robots. It is at 'this time that the ad
ministration of Penn State University will be content
for there will be no Liberal Arts students attending
Behrend.

own ways, God's way is clear.
Jesus said, "I am the way, the
truth and the life, no one comes to
the Father but through me" (John
14:6). Simply knowing that Christ
is the only way to God is not
enough. In John 1:12 God says
that we must receive Christ: "Yet
to all who received Him, to all
who believed in His name, He
gave the right to become the
children of God ... children born
of God." To receive Christ we
must turn from sin to God and
trust Christ to forgive our sins and
come into our lives.
For those who would like to
know how to get to heaven, the
criteria is found in I John 5:12,13:
"He who has the Son has life; he
who does not have the Son of God
does not have life. I write these
things to you who believe in the
name of the son of God so that
you know that you have eternal
life." Do you have the Son? If
you have questions about the
survey, results or God's answers
to the questioni on the survey, call
899-3843 and ask for Joe.
