Sports Satire- Prepares For New Season
As the summer softball season
winds down, Behrend's women
players are just getting revved up.
The team is preparing for a tour
nament at Duquesne University
on September 24. They are
scheduled to play Duquesne,
University of Akron - and PSU
Main Campus that day. The fall
"classic" is a preview of what to
expect this spring.
Leading the team in fall train
ing is two-year veteran Doreen
Rulli--a junior from Erie's
McDowell High. Rulli was voted
captain and offered a multi-year
Women's Volleyball
Ready For Action
The Lady Cubs volleyball team
has been practicing hard for
weeks now, getting ready for the
fall edition of their intercollegiate
sports program.
The women's volleyball team
began their training well before
classes started, at the volleyball
camp held at Behrend this past
August. That camp marked the
beginning of a long season for
eighth year coach Jan Wilson and
her charges.
This year's squad is led by Cap
tain Kathy Ott, a junior out of
Erie's Academy High School,
who is expected to see plenty of
action this year with her powerful
net play. , Senior Barb Schroek is
also expected to provide fire on
the court along with Kim Keller
and Lisa Woolstrum, both of
whom had impressive freshman
seasons. Keller' racked up 162
unreturned spikes and Woolstrum
totaled 132 "kills." Woolstrum
also earned a spot on the NAIA
District 18 all-star team. Roun
ding out the starting team are
freshmen Julie Pletz• and Kim
Wilson. Wilson is expected to
share setting duties with
sophomore Lori Millspaw.
Millspaw had a fine season last
year as a freshman, taking credit
for 729 of the team's 1033 assists.
The remainder of the team,
sophomores Lucy Mooney and
Mary Toboz and freshmen Julie
DiFrancisco, Renee Harrison and
Toni Lumley expect to see plenty
of action in their substitution
roles. At the scorer's table will be
Beth Pilkington and Mary Hickin,
and keeping stats, filling bottles
and, in general, doing everything
from A to Z, is sophomore Peggy
Pruss.

all-stars, where she led the league
in RBl's. The final returning vet is
sophomore Donna Morgan. From
Kiski Area High School, Morgan
is reportedly having 'contract
disputes with the front office at
this time.
There are also a number of new
faces on the diamond this year.
After two years of negotiations
the Cubs have finally signed free
agent Mindy Stasenko, a junior
from Baldwin High School.
Although the terms of the con
tract were not disclosed,
Stasenko's salary is reportedly in
the seven figure area. Clarion
State College, after placing junior
Kathy Snider on waivers, sold
contract rights to Behrend.
Formerly of Academy High in
Erie, Snider was unhappy and had
demanded to be traded. Junior
Joanie Baker, who walked out on
negotiations last season when not
offered enough money, is current
ly playing out her option and will
become a free agent at the
season's end. Baker of Churchill
High in Pittsburgh, is expected to
be offered a signing bonus after
the fall tournament. The rest of
the talented rookies and their
respected farm clubs are: Jill
Franz of General McLane in
Edinboro, Sharon Hines of Mt.
Lebanon in Pittsburgh, Grace
Novaisa of North East in western
Pennsylvania, and Beth Pilk
ington of Cochranton. The Cubs
also expect to bring up three more
young players from their AAA
team for the tournament. They
are: Renee Harrison and Mary
Toboz of Saegertown High
School and Kim Wilson of Ft.
Leßoeuf in Waterford. This com
bination of sensational veterans
and exciting rookies should prove
to be interesting and will provide
an action-filled tournament and a
promising spring!
