Garrett Leading Scorer
Cubs Tamed In
Early Season Play
Going into the 1982433 season,
Coach Sims and the Behrend net
ters were riding on high hopes.
Unfortunately, they have yet to
dent the win column after six
outings. "One major reason is the
loss of forward Tom Blythe,"
said Sims. "He was our leader on
and off the court. We lost three of
those games because we lacked
leadership." Sims added. He is
looking for one of his up
perclassmen to step out and take
charge. Although there has been
hints of leadership from the
returning players, it has been
sporatic.
The Cubs haven't had an easy
team to get on track with. They
opened with the University of
Buffalo, then Walsh,
Waynesburg, Clarion, Edinboro,
and lastly, Westminster, who
gave Pitt a tough ball game early
in the year.

feels, "We haven't blended as a
team yet. Also our level isn't up
to par. We have been unstoppable
at times but have yet to maintain
that level for an entire game."
One bright spot has been the
freshmen. Especially guards
Darrel Gray and Chris Garret.
"Darrel's quick with a good shot,
and his outstanding leaping abili
ty makes him an unexpected re
bounding and shot blocking
threat," commented forward
Rick Roseto. To date, Chris is the
team's leading scorer with a 15.4
points per game average.
Other top performers for the
Cubs have been Don Vaughn with
a 14.5 points per game average
along with 40 rebounds on the
season. Joe Greer averaging 12.0
points. Ty Vaughn with 11.6.
Steve Men with 9.8, and Shawn

I.M. Hoops Beat
Stiff Competition
Basketball at the Intra-Mural
level at Behrend seems to be
surging in the right direction.
Teams for two, three, and five
man competition are forming and
gearing up for their respective
seasons. "A year ago at this time
it was tough to round up ten guys
to run a few games late at night
or on the weekends, but this year
you go down to the gym at 11:00
at night and find 25 or 30 guys,"
remarks Rob Simon.
Last year's IM champions in
basketball was Joawad, but if the
talent displayed on the court so
far is any indication on the up
coming season a new champion
may be crowned.
I.M. director Duane Crider is
pleased. "A successful I.M. pro
gram relies on student body par
ticipation and stiff competition.

Look Ahead
Lady Cubs
At 3-2
by Joel Campbell
Sports Editor
Last year's District 18 cham
pion Lady Cubs are off to a im
pressive 3-2 record this year.
The Lady Cubs dropped their
first two games of the season to
Geneva by two and Point Park by
seven.
Coach Ellen Johns, last year's
District 18 Coach of the Year
commented, "We did not play
well our first two games and only
lost by small margins, that
speaks highly of our potential."
The Cubs evened their record
at 2-2 with home victories over
Thiel and Westminster this past
week.
Villa Maria was forced to drop
their program due- to lack of
players, which accounts for the
Lady Cubs 3-2 record due to the
forfeit.
The team has been working
hard in practice to improve their
fundamentals, which have accor
ding to Coach Johns improved in
the last three days alone.
The Lady Cubs strong point is
considered their inside game,
which consists of Barb Schofield,
Mindy Stasienko, Nat Kuhn, and
Tammy Anderson. Diane Met
zger, the starting point guard,
compliments the inside game as
well as adds a good outside
shooter.
The team returns to action in
games this Friday and Saturday
when they compete in the
Baldwin-Wallace holiday
tournament.
