PAGE FOUR Fall Intramurals Show Increase By Janet Satyshnr Intramurals here at Behrend are on the up-swing. According to Duane Crider, the Director of In tramurals, interest has definitely increased in fall activities and in the intramural program in general. This increase can be at tributed to the amount of students on campus this year and to the in formative orientation program that introduced the intramural activitiy schedule for the year. Duane has gone to great pains to develop an initiation program for incoming freshmen, and has also developed a handbook which in cludes activities, available facilities and their time schedules, and the basic "do's and dont's" of the IM program. Fall term offers flag football, golf, soccer, and a Turkey Trot (a 3 mile run). All the activities are open to both men and women. Although flag football and golf deadlines have passed, there is Welcome To Cub Country!! MONDAY TWO 11111 P MADNESS! . FREE COKES Good Only NO JOKES! . Jeffrey Hamblin 'ourth Thursday of Each Month Reed Conference Room, 4 p.m. still time to organize a team for soccer or get in shape for the three mile run. For those of you who are look ing for people to play on a team or are looking for a team to play on, Crider has made available a sign up sheet that is posted on the IM bulletin board in Erie Hall. If you are interested in playing or look ing for players, check it out. It's there for your benefit. Also on the board is information on up coming activities, applications for team entries, schedules, and league standings. Although the Intramural Pro gram is a non-profit organization, players are asked to donate one dollar to help defray the cost of officials and t-shirts. Ah, yes, the t-shirts. If your team is fortunate enough to "win it all", each player on the winning team will receive a t-shirt. Not bad for a dollar! This year the Student Union BEHREND COLLEGIAN Board and Student Affairs are Combining efforts with the IM Department to add a new "twist" to the program. After all of the activities have been completed and the champions determined, there will be a dance where the winners will receive their t shirts. Duane has also informed us of a Putt-Putt tournament to be scheduled in the near future. If you are interested in getting things started, stop down and see Crider in the IM office located in Erie Hall. He's always looking for enthusiastic people to help plan and schedule new events. Crider also noted a ping-pong tournament to be scheduled in the near future. If you are interested in getting "the ball rolling", stop down to the IM office located in Erie Hall. According to Crider, the program is always looking for enthusiastic people to help plan and schedule events. ROMAN CATHOLIC MASS The Rev. Charles Schmitt Saturdays, 5:30 p.m. R.U.B. Student Lounge Cubs Face Tough Season By Molly Ileidecker Over the past two seasons, one of the most successful sports team at Behrend has been the Women's Volleyball Team. The team is shooting for its third con secutive 20 win season. Belonging to both the Women's Keystone Conference (W.K.C.) and NAJA District 18, the Lady Cubs will face stiff competition, but Coach Jan Wilson feels the team is capable of capturing both crowns. This year's team captain is Natalie Kuhn, who is only the se cond senior in Behrend Volleyball history. Natalie has been chosen to the W.K.C. All-Conference team as a hitter the past two seasons. Another experienced player is DeEtte Bacon who elected to transfer back to Behrend from State so she could play volleyball. Named to both W.K.C. All- Conference team and NAIA District 18 All-Star team last season as a hitter, DeEtte will be used as a setter and a hitter this Spikers Up For Season By Joel Campbell Sports Editor As in the past seasons, the Behrend soccer team is once again under the arection of Mr. Herb Lauffer. The Cubs are com ing off a 6 win and 8 loss season, but Lauffer and his players are cautiously confident. This year's co-captains are senior midfielder . Tom Kennard and senior stopper-back Bob MacZura. Kennard was an all western Pennsylvania inter collegiate all star his junior season. He has since moved from back to midfielder and Lauffer feels he is adjusting well. Other returning up perclassmen who figure pro minently in Lauffer's plans are senior Ed Bell at striker, juniors Tom Mandl at back and John An drews at goalie, and sophomores Gary Regal at back, Terry Man nering as a midfielder, and Doug Christie at sweeperback. • Promising freshman Joel Buckwalter has won a starting position as a midfielder along with Jamie Kreber at forward. Keith Ahlers, Chip Downes, and Dave McCracken are all com peting for the outside halfback position. Co-captain Tom Kennard states "This year's soccer team, which is young, has the most team unity I've seen in my four S.U.B. Weekend Cinema Date September 25 and 26 ' Wait Until Dark October 9 and 10 - • China Syndrome October 16 and 17 The Duet October 23 and 24 The Deep October 30 and November 1 Enter The Dragon November 6 and 7 Midnight Express November 13 and 14 Deliverance - - SEPTEMBER 23, 1982 Returning from last years team are sophomore Kathy Ott and Sandy Rhea. Kathy and San dy both play the hitter position and will enjoy a lot of playing time. Other team members include sophomore Marie Miller (hitter) freshmen Sandy Ball (setter), Adrianne Churlik (hitter), Kim Keller (hitter), Lori Millspaw (setter), Lucy Mooney (hitter), and Lisa Woolstrum (hitter). The Lady Cubs have only six home matches left, so everyone on campus should make an effort to see at least one match. All mat ches begin at 6 p.m. and the match dates are as follows: September 30 - Thiel and Erie C.C.; October 19 - Westminster and SUNY-Fredonia ; October 21 - Villa Maria and Clarion St.; Oc tober 28 - Mercyhurst; November 2 - Grove City; November 4 - Geneva; and November 9 - Allegheny. Come and cheer this successful team on to another winning season! years as a player. The team con sists of 50 per cent freshmen with three freshmen starting each game. With the support of the stu dent body, I think Herb's Blue and White Army can do battle with anybody, the result being a winning season." When asked for a prediction for the upcoming season Kennard replied, "If I were to make a prediction for the outcome of a few of our games, especially Homecoming with U.P.J. (University of Pittsburgh- Johnstown), it would be real TOUGH! When the smoke clears after the final minute of the last game, though, we'll still be stan ding ... tall. Lauffer feels this year's schedule is very tough, and that was proven on September 11 against Indiana when the Cubs lost 1-0, Lauffer felt that "Indiana used a lot of pressure against us. The key was our lack of game ex perience. We had no real signifi cant shots and basically played poor fundamental soccer. He went on to add that "Behrend has always had a good soccer program and the five area schools measure their success with the way they play against Behrend. This is the reason for such good rivalries against Mer ayhurst and Gannon." FILM
