PAGE 2 EDITORIAL Final Farewell!!! Chuck Beckman 0.K., so it's the final Behrend Collegian issue of the year, and here I am writing editorials when I've got three papers due in the immediate future. But hey, we haven't written about ourselves yet this year, and if I don't I guess no one else will, so ... You transferees to Main Cam pus will be happy to know (or maybe you won't care) that Co editor John Skrzy p czak, despite numerous editorials to the-Con trary, will be at Main Campus come fall - term. Skrzypczak, whose literary hero is Dr. Seuss, found out that he had to transfer to University Park, and his pen has been quiet ever since. Skrzypczak, it is well known, always wear brass knuckles on his right hand, and a "phantom ring" on his left index finger. I must say that he and I got along ° well; that he only slugged me with brass knuckles once, for laughing at him when the cup in the Serv-O-Mation machine drop ped upside down. We (remaining) at the Col legian: wish Skrzypczak the best of luck when he enters the hospital this summer for a neck operation. They're going to give him one. Seriously, John and I have been through a long and sometimes painful year. Skrzypczak, despite his tough guy exterior, has a heart of gold. And knuckles of brass. Tricia Wood. What can I say about this fine journalist that hasn't already been said? Anything. Tricia leaves the Behrend Col legian after a year of constantly refusing to do things John and I have asked her to do. Tricia has -seen to it this year that the Behrend Collegian reads less like journalism and more like Finnigan's Wake, will become a full-fledged journalism major at Main Campus next fall. As a token of my gratitude, the Behrend Collegian is giving Tricia her very own "Press Hat". Size fourteen. Joe O'Keeffe, the "Joe Piscopo" of Behrend College Sportswriters, leaves us to fur ther his degree in finance and tv watching (with specific emphasis on late night Japanese Horror Sentimental Value By John Skrzypczak I've been receiving a lot of criticism in regards to an editorial of mine that I wrote earlier-this year. The editorial was entitled, "Behrend, Stick Around." Many people have been calling me a hypocrite because I am cur rently enrolled for fall term at Main Campus. Well, here is my defense. First, let me explain what I said in that editorial. I emphasiz ed the fact• that I am fed up with people who constantly go around degrading Behrend and resenting the fact that they are students here. However, I give permission to those who don't bitch when Movies) Joe, who was to journalism what the Marquis de Sade was to French nobility, takes with him two years of valuable newspaper training, and my Woody Allen book, which he claims he "lost". Ron Leonardi and Tony Newman. Ron and Tony also head to Main Campus to further their educations where they'll tell them to forget everything they learned in their two terms with the Bebrend Collegian. Ron and Tony wrote so well, they even made assignments I gave them interesting, no small feat. Of course, we had many more people on the Collegian staff this year. Everyone worked like ants carrying potato chips, trying to make Behrend's newspaper bet ter than it's ever been. And I think they've succeeded. I also think that, as with anyone who becomes involved with stu dent activities, these people got as much out of their experience as Behrend received from them. My hope is that next year we can get five - dedicated people to replace these four. And six the year after. In this way, maybe we can put out a paper rivaling those of the area colleges. And finally, I'd like to thank the Behrend Faculty and Ad ministration for all the en couragement and support they have shown the Collegian throughout the year. The Ad ministration has allowed the Behrend Collegian to remain a forum for the students, edited wholly by students. As I said last fall, we aren't pawns of the Administration. No newspaper should be. Dean Lilley, Dean Harshbarger, Dr. Bly (the Collegian's advisor), and others weathered our mistakes with us, and I'm very grateful for that. Meanwhile, those of us who are staying behind are looking for ward to a productive year next year. As I said, the loss of these four people will hurt; yet I'm cer tain that we'll fmd few people who are concerned enough about Behrend to join the newspaper staff, and concerned enough about his/her fellow student to want to keep them informed. they are here and have to con tinue their studies at main cam pus to proceed to University Park. Simply because I am in that same boat. Secondly, if I could stay here (I am a 6th term Journalism ma bor), I would. So, am I actually eing forced to do something against my own will? Sort of. Would you consider going to main a good move if it can be pro ven that indeed main campus is a better learning institute than Behrend. Well, what does everybody do in America when they are trying to prove that something is better or worse than something else. BEHREND COLLEGIAN They put a price on it. For ex ample, a car that costs more is better than a cheaper one. A house that costs $150,000 is better than a $75,000. Right? Right. Then, let me apply this philosophy to this situation. Which campus is better? Behrend or University Park? - Let me use a figure I recently saw in the weekly Collegian. The net worth of State was 1.5 billion. Actually 1.6 billion to me because Mr. Beckman won't be there and possibly. I'll enjoy myself even better. This may be correct or not, but that doesn't matter. Because, my estimate of Behrend will pro-, bably be even more incorrect. 0.K., now let me assess (I use that term loosely) Behrend. This is going to be interesting. I've walked around Behrend and came up with these figures. There are seven large buildings (I think) three dorms at two million each, one cafeteria and office building at 2.5 million. And three large buildings that hold classrooms and are valued at 1.5 million each. That's 13 million (or so). Then, there are about five or six or seven small wooden buildings. They are known as Tuinbull and the Niiith Cottage and some other names but it's not important. I have been gracious and given these buildings the assessed value of $lOO,OOO (if that Letters to The Editor Dear Editor: The book of Revelations has this message from our Creator, Jesus Christ: "Behold, I am com ing soon! My reward is with me, and I will give to everyone accor ding to what he has done. I am the Alpha and Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End. Blessed are those who wash their robes, that they may have the right to the tree of life and may go through the gates into the city. Outside are the dogs, those who practice magic arts, the sex ually immoral, the murderers, the idolaters and everyone who loves and practices falsehood." Now wait a minute, the Col legian office and Behrend Theater are included in these areas. Can you put a price tag on thoughts and - talent? Sure you can we're in America. How about another million! Now wait a minute, I can't forget, 1.C.C., the computer room, oh yeah, and Erie Hall, that's another three million. How about the seventeen strange-shaped street or sidewalk lights, seven tennis courts, a trailer, and a built-in swimming pool. How about trees? We have a lot of trees. Let's say 27,000 (wait a minute I just asked Chuck and he said there are only 600). 0.K., then I'll compromise with Charles (like I've been doing all year), 13,800 trees at $l,OOO each. That's $13,800 ... no wait, $13,800,000. In that grand total from U.P. they also included faculty; administration, and students. Yes, they put price tags on people. Let's see, faculty and ad ministration a buck and a quarter each. No, • seriously a couple million dollars worth of talent and knowledge. And 2,000 students. Considering most of us are undergrads, the in dividual figure will have to be lower (because grads are worth more). That's 2,000 or so students Have you washed your robes? Are you ready for the day you will be required to give an account for all you have done? "Be reconcil ed to God. God made Ifun (Jesus Christ, our only Hope) who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God." (II Corin thians 5:21) - You may say, "Before I die I'll get right with God and straighten things out," but God says, "In the time of my favor I heard you, and in the day of salvation I helped you. I tell you, NOW is the time of God's favor, NOW is the day of salvation." (II Corinthians 6:6). Today is the day to get right with God for tomorrow may be too late. Sincerely, Joe Fornear Co-Editors: Joe O'Keeffe Ron Leonardi Tony Newman Althea Hyatt Theresa McLauglin at $lO,OOO each. What's that 20 Million or 200 million? (Help me Mrs. Burrows). Oh, hell with unit. Let's label Behrend at one billion dollars. Not bad, except for tax purposes, but for public relations a very impressive figure (don't quote any of thii in fo. Mr. Hancock). Now, overall there is a 500 million dollar difference between the net worth of Penn State (I wonder if they included Behrend College in that figure? who cares) and Behrend College. Wrong, I forget a few more areas that I hesitated to put any dollar amount on. But, then again it is America. So now I will put a price tag -on sentiment. (I guess you could call it sentimental value). The memories of Behrend, the Collegian, the fact that Erie is my home town, the beautiful cam pus, my acquaintances, (not in cluding Chuck), my Chinese laun dry, the Gorge parties, our AM radio, our "satire", Dean Lilley's office, my girlfriend, and the back door. These very important memories are worth more money than I can possibly imagine (now _ wait a minute; John, you're get ting rathei- ridiculous). Yes, now to become more realistic again. I enjoyed Behrend, the Collegian, and especially the . Collegian staff. ;Dear Editor: I would like to tell the Record's Office what a great idea the ten tative schedules are! I, for one, really appreciate the extra effort. This new format allowed me to see when and in what-order I could take my required cla c ses. Others have mentioned"that they were able to spot developing pro blem s . Nothing is more frustrating than a last-minute set-back on your graduation date. Please let the peo ple know that we think this is great stuff. Sincerely,- Chris Wolfe Chuck Beckman John Skrzypczak Photo Editor: Steve Nesbit Margie Reiser Cynthia Warwick Tricia Wood MAY 13.1982
