Spring Fever:
New
Baseball
Coach
By Joel Campbell
With the departure of Coach
Clarence Stoner last year to Main
Campus, Mr. Joseph Spinelli will
manage Behrend's baseball
team. Spinelli, also a soccer and
basketball coach at St. Mark's
Seminary, eagerly anticipates
the coming season.
The returning players from last
year's successful squad, plus an
"excellent group of freshmen",
according to Coach Spinelli,
should form the nucleus of a good
team. Team captains Joe
Fornear and Greg Breskey
should add leadership to the
squad. Coach Spinelli stated that,
"this- is the best group of
freshmen ever at Behrend."
Gone from last, year's squad
.are seven of the team's top ten
players, as well as fourteen of the
pitching staff's twenty wins.
To replace the§e losses, Spinelli
has many of the athletes playing
unfamiliar positions, as well as a
young pitching staff.
Spinelli kept 29 players on this
year's squad. One of the reasons
is so the team can play. intra
squad games. With such a short
time to prepare for the season,
Coach Spinelli feels "It's impor
tant for the team to play in game
situations, and to rid themselves
of mental errors."
Another reason for such a large
squad can be attributed to the dif
ficult decisions when making
team' cuts. The coach's
philosophy is that if returning
players were good enough to
make last year's team suc
cessful, that they are good
enough for this year's team.
That meant that it would be dif
ficult for freshmen, but the
freshmen played so well during
try-outs that Spinelli was left with
little choice. He feels this group
of younger players will help
Behrend's program in the long
run.
This year's assistant coach is
Dick Crist. Crist was Behrend's
first team NAIA District 18 selec
tion at third bage. Crist will be
able to assist Spinelli on the con
trasting styles and ballplayers of
opposing teams. Spinelli -said
"Dick adds a bridge between the
ballplayers and myself. He'll be a
fine acquisition."
Coach Spinelli feels that the
return of key RBI men and the
powerful hitting corps, on
Behrend's team mixed with good
defensive play will keep Behrend
competitive with any team in the
District.

Celebrities:
Penn
State
Twins
By Nick Notias
The 19-year-old Sax twins, Beth
(left), and Amy (right), posed for
Penn State in order to promote
Penn State football. So let's meet
them. ,
They are twins from Upper St.
Clair, Pittsburgh. Amy and Beth
are sixth term students. Beth is
majoring in Letters, Arts, and
Sciences, and Amy in Business.
_ Amy and Beth have had model
ing experience with "Seventeen
Magazine" and Horne's depart
ment store. They were asked if
they would pose for other posters,
or do any modeling. They said
they- weren't looking for oppor
tunities to model, but they would
model-'provided that they didn't
have todress in t-shirts or similar
costumes.
Because of their immense
popularity, the twins have had to
deal with autograph seekers. The
girls said they find this fun;
however, when trying to study, it
does become annoying.
New. Economic Research
Institute Underway
Behrend's new Economic
Research Institute of Erie
(ERIE) is currently in operation
and running smoothly, according
to Dr. Barry R. Weller, associate
professor of economics and direc
tor of the Institute.
The Research Institute, which
has been in operaton for the past
month, encompasses a wide
variety of objectives relating to
its service to the community.
The first objective, Weller ex
plained, involves the gathering of ,
as much descriptive data as
possible concerning the Erie
regional economy.
One problem encountered is
that the data needed is widely
scattered in various places such
as the:Census Department, Penn
State,•and many local sources.
Second:, the Institute • will
monitor the Erie business cycle
and attempt to find out how well
Erie County is doing in 'relation to
the state and the nation.
"We want to find out whether
things, get bad here before they do
nationwide or after they do na
tionwide and whether business
fluctuations in Erie are more
severe or less so than those on the

national level," said Weller.
The final objective, which is
long term, deals with the building
of econometric models. These
models will enable the staff to
predict the future Course of
economic and business activity in
the Erie area.
"We're talking about three
stages here," he said. "Data,
simple monitoring of the Erie
economy, and actually doing
some forecasting if possible. That
forecasting aspect is very far
down the line."
Funding for the start up and in
itial operating budget is being
provided by Bebrend and Penn
State. This starting • budget
amounts to $1,200. "Essentially,
what we are doing with that
Money is getting things such"as
computer manuals, some data
tapes, and some equipment for
our micro computer systems,"
said Weller.
Dr. Weller - - anticipates that
future funding will be ,derived
primarily from corporate and in
dividual gifts as well - as grants
and contracts:
In addition to Dr. Weller, other
staff members include Mr. Jack
Burke, Associate Dean; Mr. An
thony Salvia, - :statistician; Mr.
James Kurre, economics; and
Dr. Ki Shim, economics.

examining what data is available
with research being done in three
areas.
"We hope to have a good work
ing data base in place by
September so we can actually
start doing research," Weller
added.
Dr. Weller is dealing with the
College of Business at University
Park which will provide in-depth
information on Pennsylvania and
Erie County.
At the present time, Mr. Kurre
is involved with the Pennsylvania
Office of Employment Security
while Mr. Salvia is- contacting
various leaders and groups in the
community to see what data can
be gathered.
In analyzing the Erie economy,
Dr. Weller stressed that the area
economy tends to be relatively
unstable cyclically compared to
the national economy. For exam
ple, when the nation's unemploy
ment rate rises from six to seven
per cent, the Erie unemployment
-rate is going from nine to ten per
"cent.
"The problems that you see on
the national nature tend to be
magnified in the Erie communi
ty," said Weller. "One of the
things we might want to do is try
to pinpoint exactly where those
large rises in unemployment
come about so perhaps we might
be able to minimize them in the
future."
'Further hampering - the area
economy'is the bleak outlook con
cerning college students in the
job market this year.
According to Dr. Weller, when
a business cycle decline occurs,

one of _the first things to go is
heavy industry which -results in
an increase, in unemployment.
How does this hurt college
students?
Since the national unemploy
ment rate is so high - (the current
nine per cent rate being the
highest since 1941), there are
many workers with experience
who are laid off. These people
will have to be called back first
resulting in an extremely tough
job market for undergraduates.
-Dr. Weller does not expect a
business cycle expansion to begin
again until the third quarter of
this year which will occur either
in September or October.
