THE BEHREND COLLEGIAN
Improving Cubs
Outhustle Alliance
by Joe Olieeffe
Behrend's Cubs outhustled
Alliance Collge's - Eagles last
Wednesday, 62-48. Behrend
climbed to 8-10 for the season.
Center Don Vaughn keyed the
Behrend attack with 23 points to
lead all scorers, and kept the
Eagles, (Harold Mong), to a low
six points.
"Shep" Robinson followed with
19 tallies of his own and Ty
Vaughn added another nine.
Behrend assumed command of
the contest with Vaughn and
Robinson slam-dunking the
Eagles to considerable margins.
Mong's effectiveness was limited
since. Vaughn swatted away
many of his potential shots. Don,
who outrebounded the Alliance
star, (5-6), was the key to
Behrend's fastbreak attack.
Guards Shawn Thamert and Ty
Vaughn scored many of Don's
outlet passes.
Vaughn and Steve Aden con
tributed key - inside markers as
Behrend had built an advan
tageous 15 points shortly before

intermission. The first half end
ed, 33-20 in Behrend's favor.
The second period opened with
Don Vaughn scoring Bebrend's
first eight points on a pair of free
throws and jumpers after a steal.
Then Tom Blythe and Robinson
each wanted in the battle, hitting
dead a 20-footer that gave
Behrend an eventual 17 point
advantage.
It semed to be a replay of this
year's Super Bowl, basketball
style, from then on. Alliance got
its share. of Cub loose balls, and
began to capitalize and score on
evtary opportunity. Soon, Alliance
came back as Behrend fell apart.
At one point, the Eagles hit on a
10-2 scoring burst.
All turned around from then on,
as game officials blew whistles
on a number of Alliance eagers.
Don, Ty Vaughn, and Thamert
'each went to the charity stripe,
where they hit better than half of
their attempts.
Behrend went on to win, 62-48
for its third win in a row.
BEHREND EDGES -
UIiUMJ
The Cubs edged out the Bulls
from the University of Buffalo;
70-68, ,as Don Vaughn hit on a
jumper with five seconds
remaining.
Behrend trailed by as many as
nine points late in the second half,
but later applied a -full-court
press to eliminate the deficit.
The lead changed hands
several times and the first half
ended with the winners behind by
two, 28-26.
While the Bulls won the battle
at the free throw line, shooting 83
per cent to 53 per cent compared
to Behrend, Buffalo committed a
total of 17 turnovers' that proved
to be the difference for the Cub
win.
Don Vaughn once again paced
offensive and defensive attacks
scoring a team leading 19 points
and grabbing ten missed shots.
Following an 11-4 scoring spell
from the Bulls, Behrend found
itself in trouble. Shawn Thamert
and Shep Robinson helped bring
back the Cubs by one, 43-42. From
there, the game see-sawed with
the score deadlocked on several
occasions.
Eventually, the game was tied
at 68 and Thamert tried a 20
footer that fell short. Vaughn
then grabbed the rebound and tip
ped it in at the buzzer.
BEHREND CRUSHES
VINCENT
Behrend was inspired by the
arrival of the Penn State Nittany
Lion during "Spirit Week" to
crush St. Vincent College, 80-66.
The game bounced , back bet
ween the two as the score was
tied throughout the first half.
Shep Robinson put his fellow
Cubs up by fogr on a drive
downcourt and dishing Off to Ty
Vaughn to end the half, 36-30, in
Behrend's favor.
Behrend found productive scor
ing from Ty (19 points). and
Shawn (17).
Shooting better than 46 per cent
to form the field, Behrend hit on
18 to 26 of its free throws, com
pared to Vincent's four.
Never trailing in the contest,
Behrend assumed its asser
tiveness from halftime, after
which Vincent was unable to
stage any comeback:
