Tennis Team Drops
Tough Match
Last Friday, April 20, Behrend
dropped a varsity tennis match to
a tough Indiana State of Penn
sylvania team, losing by a score
of 6-3.
The Cubs won the first three
singles matches, Mark Baginski,
Steve Pappas, and Gary
Gaspericii all recording wins, but
lost the last three. The team
needed to win two of the three
doubles matches, but ended up
losing all three.
Mark Baginski is still un
defeated in singles, but the
number one doubles team suf
fered its first loss. Indiana raised
its record to 4-0 as Behrend
dropped to 3-3, with tough mat
ches coming up. The Cubs face
Mercyhurst today, a team that
has been extremely tough in the
last few years.
The day before Behrend had
dropped another' tough match to
Slippery Rock (4-0) by a score of
7-2 The Cubs' only victories
were one singles and number one
doubles. Gary Gasperich and Jim
Brennan (number three and four
singles) both lost their matches
in three sets.

long, losing only three games.
In the most exciting of the
championship matches, the
Degraders came back from a 2-1
deficit to edge by the Scroc
ckersers, who had been the
regular season champions. The
two teams had split a pair of
matches during the regular
season, and the championship
games were nearly all close, the
fifth game being decided by a 15-
13 margin. The Degraders, also a
faculty-staff team, defeated
Scrockers last year by a 3-2
margin.
Degraders barely made it into
the championship match as they
had to overcome a tough team,
the Old Squad (the volleyball
club), in the semi-final on April
10. Degraders won the match 3-1,
but had to overcome 11-2 and 10-1
margins the last two games in
order to qualify to meet the
Scrockers.
Record Now 6-4
Behrend
This past Tuesday, April zs,
Behrend's varsity baseball team
swept a doubleheader from
visiting Gannon College by scores
of 8-7 in the first game and 10-4 in
the second. The Cubs improved
their record to 6-4 with the vic
tories. After dropping a twinbill
to Indiana State to begin the
season, Behrend has won six of
its last eight games.
Victory did not come easily in
the first game against Gannon.
The Knights scored three runs in
the first, Behrend getting two
back in the bottom of the first.

Intramural softball season is
off to a grand start, with several
very good student teams looking
to dethrone the Degraders,
perennial Behrend softball cham
pions.
Pictured above is pitcher Bob
Hostetler, the key to the success
of the Degraders, a faculty and
staff team. But lest any upstart
student teams look to upset the
champions, they should be aware
that the faculty can sometimes
field and hit, too.
There have been rumors that
the Nadlees, featuring no hit
specialist Tom "Tug" Miller, ex
pect to go all the way. They
perhaps are counting on the
moral support of their
cheerleading squad. The
Collegian suspects, however, that
the only hope Nadlees have is to
put the cheerleaders on the field
and have the men lead the
cheers.

fourth, scoring three more runs.
John Klochak's single was the
crucial blow in the rally. But
Gannon tied the game in the
seventh.
However, in the bottom of the
seventh Joe Mack doubled, and
Bill. Baughman drove him in with
a single to win the game. Joe
Breski, in relief of John Greulich,
earned the win.
The second game was no con
test. Rege Powers hit a two run
homer in the second inning, and
Joe Fornear added a three run
blast in the fifth. Behrend added
four runs in the sixth as John
Klochak was credited with the
win, allowing just six hits as he
went the distance.
On April 10 Behrend split a
doubleheader with Mercyhurst,
winning 4-3 in the contest at Mer
cyhurst and losing the second
game by the same score.
Behrend next played at Clarion
State, once again winning the fir
st game, 9-7, but dropping the
second by a 4-3 score in eleven in
nings.
Then last Saturday Behrend en
tertained Houghton at home. The
Cubs were rude hosts, bouncing
an outclassed Houghton team by
scores of 15-4 and 10-0.

Coach Stoner is very pleasantly
surprised with the hitting of the
team. The team batting average
is a lofty .321. Even the batters
with lower averages, like Dave
Bressanelli, are hitting the ball
very well, but sometimes right at
•fielders. Coach Stoner is
especially pleased with the balan
ce in the attack, with six batters
hitting better than .300. There has
also been contribution from
many players in RBl's, as seven
players have driven in from four
to eight runs.
The control of the pitchers, a
problem early in the season, has
also improved, and the defense is
stable. The pattern so far has
been to give up runs early in the
game, but then for the pitching to
firm up and for the batting to
bring the Cubs back into the
game, often to victory.
As the weather has improved
and the Behrend attack come
around, the games have provided
the kind of fun Coach Stoner feels
should be a part of college
baseball. Yesterday the Cubs
were to travel to meet a tough
Westminster team that figures to
be one of the chief competitors
with Behrend for post-season
District 18 play.
