March 22, 1979 Lady Cubs Shine At Keystone Conference The Behrend College women's basketball team, after what seemed like an unpromising start, finished a successful season. They came back from an 0-6 record at the beginning of the season against some tough competition to finish with an 8-10 record and a second place finish in the Keystone Conference. The team had only two returning lettermen from the previous year's team, Sophomore center Cheryl Ramsdell and Junior forward Sharon Vinston. The team overcame inex perience and won seven of their last eleven games, including four in a row. Only a loss to Grove City in overtime prevented the Lady Cubs from placing first in the Keystone Conference. According to coach Ellen Johns, the team showed a lot of "heart" in overcoming the early season problems, and gradually overcame their inexperience. Five of the top seven starters are returning next year. Two other forwards, Patty Hillkirk and Janet Satyshur, will also be returning. Three freshmen guards, Janet Fogarty, Lois McKean, and Becky Hiegel, provided the team with fine leadership considering their inexperience at the college level. Fogerty led the Keystone Conference in assists with 83, good enough to place her in the top 10 for assists in the Eastern Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women. McKean ended third in the conference in field goal per centage (48:6) and seventh in scoring (12.6.ppg). Coach Johns has begun recruiting in the high schools, though Behrend has not in the past given financial aid for women's basketball, and next year's team should be exciting to watch. Behrend lost the match 6-2, winning only at third singles and first doubles. Coach Avallone feels the team generally played badly and that there were no excuses for the poor play. It was, however, the first competition for the team, and many of the players played nervously. Despite the loss, Avallone thinks it is good to have played the match because it pointed out areas where the players need to work. Due to the limited court time, the players used pro set scoring, 10 games winning the singles matches and eight for the doubles. A no-ad scoring was also used.
