March 10,1978 "A Delicate Balance" A Huge Success by Sheri Reim Collegian Staff Writer Terror reigns at the studio theatre as the Behrend Players accomplish still another suc cessful production. Giving the audience a chance to sit bhck in their seats and observe the comical to dramatic antics of another family, the Players performed Edward Albee’s broadway hit, “A Delicate Balance.” Under the direction of Paul Iddings, six talented and versatile actors made the play an enjoyable evening.' A handsome woman in her late fifties, Agnes opens and closes the action of the play. Without her presence, the others might very well fall apart. She keeps the family in shape; she maintains it and holds it together. This critical role was performed by first-time actress, Susan Hood. Attending Behrend College, Susan is a non-degree student whose main interest is theatre arts. She performed her difficult role with admirable ease and confidence. Jeff Williams, who has per formed in over 30 productions, stole several of the scenes in his role as Tobias. The audience could not help but reach out to Tobias in his many times of failure and confusion. He appears quiet and frustrated from coping with demands and handling the fact that he hates having his life judged. Finally his withdrawn emotions explode into an ef fectual outburst. Agnes’s sister functions in the family as a watchful bystander. Played by Mariann Rozsas, Claire insists she is not “a alcoholic,” but merely a drunk. Her insinuations and accusations are caustically entertaining and Slim Pickin's by Tim Kenney Staff Writer Erie has broken many records weather-wise this year, including the most snowfall in one month (63 inches), the most snowfall for a year, and the lowest barometric pressure reading. (28.31 inches.) We should consider ourselves lucky, however, because the world records are: one month, 136 inches; one year, 1,014.5 in ches, and the lowest barometric reading, 25.91 inches. Both snowfall records were in the U.S., Montana and Washington, respectively. So, it could be worse! Elton John’s “Captain Fan tastic” album is the only album in history to go from uncharted straight to Number 1 on the Top 10 list in America. Sign seen at recent Notre Dame basketball game in South Bend, Indiana: “Hi, Mom. Who needs money? Send a shovel.” An interesting note: 3 out of 5 students will not finish c011ege..... Fact! If it’s -30 F and the winds are 30 mph, flesh will freeze solid in 30 seconds. Frostbite, anyone? Penn State’s football team ended the season ranked Number 5 in the country. They weren’t even considered for Number 1, and-they were the only Top 10 team with a 10-1 record that did not go to a major bowl. It will be interesting to see what the sports writers rank than in the preseason polls next fall. They’ll probably get shortchanged, as usual. also force the family to face the truth of the destructiveness of their relationships. Playing the emancipated woman, Claire entertains the audience with a little accordion music and yodeling. Julia, Agnes’ and Tobias’ daughter, returns to the family every three years after the most recent divorce. Jan Kremer, a sophomore at Mercyhurst College, plays the role of Julia, a perpetual brat. She comes back to the house yelling and screaming because she cannot have everything as she wants. To the delight of the audience, Julia finally receives what she deserves, a well-earned slap in the face. One night, terror descends upon the entire -family as best friends, Harry and Edna, declare they have come, to live with Agnes and Tobias. Playing the Behrend Collegian frightened and not so forceful role of Harry is Dan Roscher, another first time actor and sophomore at Behrend. Deirdre McCauley, who portrays Edna, has been seen on the studio theatre’s stage several times before, and never disappoints an audience. Edna feels that she belongs wherever she happens to be; that everyone must co-exist. Throughout the play, she sur prises everyone by speaking her mind and performing a god mother’s duty. The Behrend Players continue to invite the audiences to join them in the world of fantasy as they prepare for spring term’s production, “The Picnic,” by William Inge. A copy of the play is on reserve at the library. Auditions will be March 8 through 10 at 7:00 p.m. in the studio theatre. Everyone is encouraged to come down.
