Page Two From The Desk Of The Editor A new term is now here and for many of us it will be last at Behrend. I am sure many of you are very happy about that, but I am also sure that there are many who are not looking forward to leaving. Regardless of that, spring is coming which is a good time to have a good time, so enjoy the term. I would like to apologize for the irregularity of the Collegian during Winter Term, and say that the cause was poor organization within our staff. Being the editor, I will take the blame for that. I am going to put the hammer down and hope that, we finish the year up, the same way we started; with a quality newspaper coming out when it * £■ Are you squeezing every cent that is humanly possible out of Behrend? If you’re not, you’re a fool. I think we should all be milking good old PSU for all she’s worth. If this seems pretty ruthless and obnoxious, it’s meant to be!! Our tuition is too high, but there’s nothing we can do about that except to make sure that for every cent we put into this place, we try to get back a nickel’s worth. As soon as more students begin library, there’s a way to beat that to think about college as an in- also. Many of you probably don’t vestment rather than just a know that you can request books pastime, the returns on our and photocopies of periodicals tuition will go up dramatically, from Main Campus. Sure it takes Nothing bugs me more than time, but with a little planning in students asking me whether or advance, you can have a couple not they should take a particular of books arriving here every course because they heard the week. Make those librarians Sgt. King Does Art Work Deacon The Beacon His name is Deacon, and he plans to be here long enough to obtain every degree that Behrend College has to offer. He’s not extremely polite, having a propensity for pointing at people and speaking rather bluntly sometimes. On the other hand, he’s honest, tough, a hard worker, and very dedicated. Those who know him agree without qualification that he’ll be a real asset to Behrend for as long as he’s here. Deacon is the product, and is fated to be the chief represen tative, of the Army Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) Department, also known as the Department of Military Science. Major Harry Small, Officer in charge of the three-year-old program here at Behrend, By Dave Jordan Editor-In-Chief should. In the last issue, Kurt and myself mentioned that we are in desperate need of a staff for next year. We need writers, photographers, typists, in ad dition to editors. If you are in terested and qualified (the only real qualification is that you are interested) let us know as soon as possible, and you can start whenever you want; later on this afternoon if you really want. Start keeping your eyes on S.I.S. (Student Information System) those funny looking televisions hanging in the Behrend and Nick lobbies. Why? I’m sure you’ll ask. Well, the As I See It by Kurt Cavano Executive Editor teacher gives hard test. Perhaps he does, but if his lectures are brilliant, then that course is worth more than nearly any other course you might take that term. So why not take it? You may work a little harder, but you know you’ve learned something when you finish that class. This isn’t the only way to get your money out of Behrend College. There are hundreds of others. If you don’t like our inadequate decided that some sort of iden tifying emblem was needed to symbolize the integrality of . the relationship between ROTC and Behrend, and, more specifically, the ROTC program itself. Mr. Reid Schmiedlin, the ROTC Department secretary, came up with the idea of combining the Behrend Cub with a steel helmet, representing the U S Army, in a take-off on the famous World War II “I Want You In The U S Army” poster by James Montgomery Flagg. The art work was done by Master Sergeant Don King, who is an aspiring illustrator, and painter in his spare time. It won’t be long before you’ll be meeting Deacon. He’ll be fixing you with his glare and loaded finger from bulletin boards, posters, the ROTC Cadet Corps Newsletter, and inevitably, bathroom walls all over the campus. What he is saying is, “Take a look at what we’re doing in Army ROTC. We have a challenging and un beatable opportunity waiting for you.” H£i LOO%/ SUMMER rTDBS/ -A .summer Y (/ j Jt)SS 0 fi^ A _ answer is very simple; you can win great prizes like albums, T shirts, radios, plus many more. Somebody has finally come up with a contest, at absolutely no cost to the student. This somebody is Paul Bailey, the head of the Instructional Com munication Center. In order to win, all you have to do is to watch S.I.S. and if you see your student number flashed on the screen (Paul will be flashing twice a day) then run to the I.C.C. office and claim your prize. There are a few other rules which will be posted all over the campus. For his time and effort devoted to the students, I would like to thank Paul Bailey very, very much. work; that’s what they get paid for. Students also fail to take ad vantage of financial aid. Everyone should file for financial aid, even if he doesn’t think he will get it. You’d be surprised at the number of people who would get some sort of aid if they ap plied, and any free money is good money. I won’t even mention except in passing the large number of extra-curricular activities lectures, per formances, coffee houses that students fail to take advantage of. There are plenty of ways to squeeze Behrend for everything you can, and these are but a few. The more you try to do so, the more enjoyable and rewarding your stay will be. Letters by Tom Woloszyn Promoting good, safe marksmanship and fun are the two main goals of the Behrend Rifle Club. With this in mind, the club is out looking for new members. Members participate in weekly intraclub training matches as well as collegiate matches against other colleges such as Gannon, . Edinboro, and University Park (PSU). With meetings every Thursday from 7:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m., this extracurricular activity should not impose too much on the student’s normal routine schedule. All weapons are provided, and coaching is available from the club’s advisor and experienced coach, Donald King. The rifle range the club presently utilizes belongs to the Lawrence Park Rifle Club. Rides to and from the range are provided and leave the RUB parking lot at 7 p.m., as the Behrend Army ROTC Dept, allows the use of their van for transportation.
