Letters varying viewpoints Dear Editor: I could attempt to summarize a great amount of mixed emotions about Behrend in this premature final address, but it gets to be all too much. I have been suspended from Penn State for two terms for housing 4 grams of pot, knowing about it, and bringing shame to this institution. I have advised the SUN in their investigations, and we found little consistency in the severity of punishment im posed on drug-related cases. In the past years, much larger busts have met with much smaller penalties. While many state schools are becoming increasingly liberal and free, Penn'State has taken a distinct 180 degree turn into out dated attitudes on the “evils of pot and beer.” Maybe I’m paranoid, but it’s hard not to be, when I’ve been shafted like no one before. Through my work in SGA, I have found apathy overtaking most student initiative to change “the system”. But it isn’t hard; look at other schools where students have persuaded progressive change in rights and regulations (ie. Indiana, Pitt). The administration of this college is aware of their responsibility to keep informed of student dissent and will lend an ear to your ideas. Through the year, though, the SGA has dwindled into a handful of reps, that carry out the Organization’s motions, and little else. A new SGA executive board is being formed, and for once, it may be important who leads, as the students now demand action and adequate representation. ! have been subject to our S.U.B. Goes To Texas Student Union Manager Jay DiFrank and SUB President Kurt Cavano attended the 17th annual NECAA Convention in San Antonio February 16-20. NECAA (National Entertainment Campus Activity Association), of which Behrend is a member, offers through its conventions “the potential for face-to-face contact with the sellers of ex tracurricular programs, and opportunity to save money on programs and a chance to see up and-coming talent.” NECAA, providing information on available entertainment and entertainers, also offers training on how to present activities. “Over 85 hours of educational sessions in the areas of Art and Exhibits, Contemporary Entertainment, Films, Lecture, Minority Programing, Outdoor Recreation, Fine Arts, Research Services, Resident Hall Programing, Theatre, Travel, Two-Year Institutes, and Video was covered.” Such now-famous groups as Seals and Crofts and Boz Scaggs started their careers through NECAA by playing" at different colleges. Behrend appearances by the Ist National Rotagilla Band, James Mapes (ESP and hypnosis), Livingston Taylor, and N.O.R.M.L. have resulted from our membership in NECAA. Trivia by J oanne Goldberg Collegian Staff Writer Those faculty members with offices located in the North Cottage may sometimes refer their too cold or too hot residence as “the dog house”. This is not as funny as it may sound. For years, the North Cottage was the Behrend Kennels. The most famous canine to roam the paths of Behrend was Bruno, owned by Harriet Behrend, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Otto Behrend. Bruno was a favorite of the family. At the request of Mrs. Mary Behrend, Bruno’s picture will Behrend Collegian disciplinary system, along with a group of people this past month, and in the midst of it, I sense injustice. I have spent over $200.00 for two weeks room and board awaiting my final sen tence. I have not yet been in formed even vaguely of my appeal date, and was not in formed of my trial time until 10 hours previous. Although it was necessary for me to give written permission to the Behrend Collegian to use my name in connection with my bust, the Office of Student Affairs needed no such permission to release a distorted version of the bust to the Erie Times. The Times has printed two stories (Thurs. and Fri.) which wrongly connected my roommate as a host to the party. All this has been publicized before my chance for an appeal. The bust itself was sloppy as Hell, with the Area Coordinators confiscation of marijuana, which under state law they cannot touch without themselves being charged with possession (as they have no authorization), unlike Security. I could go on, but it just upsets me. I hope it upsets you enough to do something, if it’s nothing more than paying attention to your constitutional rights. I’m sorry to leave the people here; Behrend offers a sense of community like no other college, and I’d like to thank everyone for their un selfish support. Zeke, Yogi, Mason, Herb, and Brad also wish to express their thanks and farewells. We all have been given the opportunity to start again, I guess, but it’s hard leaving someplace we’ve made home. Final comment; next time you see various drunk people puking and vandalizing, think of the passive pot party that will be no more. Illegal drugs under 21: is this fair?
