Onorafo's Grapplers Prepare for Season
by Steve Bishop
Collegian Staff Writer
“When you only have twelve
healthy people and you have to
put ten of them on the mat, it
doesn’t leave much leeway.”
That statement sums up Coach
Ed Onorato’s major concern for
the upcoming Behrend wrestling
season.

On November 27, Coach Leon
Wright will take his 14 member
squad to Pitt-Johnstown and open
the 1976-77 men's varsity
basketball seasoa Captain Harry
Small, the assistant coach, feels
the team will win because “we
will enter every game this year
with a positive frame of mind —
we’re going to win!
In getting prepared for the
season opener, the team is
playing a series of scrimmages
against other schools. Facing
Jamestown Community College
on October 29, the Cubs, ac
cording to Coach Small, played
more as a team, with more im
provement on defense. “Several
of the players showed good of
fensive ability,” continued Coach
Small, “but the defense is not to
the point we want them to be.”
Saturday, November 6 was the
date of the young Cubs first away
scrimmage. Traveling to La
Roche College, the team had to
learn how to play on a smaller
court—adjust to the more
crowded and slower conditions.
Many of the players felt they did

experience (only four returning
lettermen) of this year’s squad,
he replied that “although they
don’t have much college
wrestling experience,' they’re
probably the most experienced
group we have ever had at
Behrend in terms of their high
school background.”
The competition begins in the
118 pound bracket where Shawn
not play up to their expectations.
This Saturday, Behrend faces
Medaile College of Buffalo at one
in Erie Hall.
An alumni game will be played
November 20 at 8 p.m. featuring
Jon Kennedy, Eddie Evans, Jim
Davis, and Mark Chesko, the four
leading scorers from last yep 1 ,
and Larry McAleer, the Cubs
leading story during the 1973-74
and 1974-75 seasons. A
preliminary “Old-Timers” game
at 6:30 p.m. will feature alumni
cagers from the 1960’5. No ad
mission will be charged for the
pre-season double-header,
although donations will be ac
cepted in support of the Warren
Behrend Athletic Association.

team this year is 6’l ‘'4”, although
it ranges from 5'10” to 6’7”.
During term break these

“one of the toughest teams they

of the season has Behrend facing
Westminister at 8 p.m. December

Cub rifle team meet Scots
by Rick Nan
The Behrend College Rifle
Team made its dehut last
Wednesday, November 3 against
the Edinboro State squad. The
Cubs showed their inexperience
against the Scots, losing the
match decisively in- both overall
and individual scores. Cpt. Harry
Small, the club’s advisor and
assistant coach, said that now the
team knows what they will have
to do to become a respectable
contestor. He feels that the team
does have talent but that it will
take a lot of time and practice to
capitalize on it. “If nothing else
we’ll have the squad ready for the
annual Penn State match. If we

Remarkably quick for his weight

off any opposition at 167 pounds.
Holding down the 177 pound
weight class is freshman Mike
O’Leary from Wattsburg, Pa.
O’Leary, a twenty-two year old
Vietnam veteran, runs marathons
to stay in condition. There is no
one on the squad tipping the
scales at 190, leaving the filling of
this position a mystery. But this
isn’t the case at heavyweight.
Coach Onorato is in the enviable
position of having three bonafide
“heavies” this year. They are
Jim Comes (6-5,240), a freshman
from Almond, N.Y., Eric
Wollman (5-11,255), a sophomore
from McDowell, and Hiram
College transfer Bill “Tiny”
Powers (6-3, 260), who won’t be
eligible until January 11.
A big question mark this season
is whether or not 150 pound senior
Ashley Swift will be wrestling for
Behrend. There is a possibility he
may return here after competing
last year at University Park.
Swift compiled a tremendous 37-
7-1 record in two years at
Behrend, the best ever. He also
copped the District 18 NAIA
championship as a sophomore.
Coach Onorato remarked about
the prize grappler, “He’s got the
kind of leadership and deter
mination that rubs off. In my
estimation he’s a potential
national champion There are
also three or four others who are
capable of making Nationals and
placing in it.”
The squad’s first shceduled
activity is slated for December 3
and 4 in the Edinboro Tourney.
