Page Two To the Editor In my experience as a college student, I have run across all types and strains of individuals. Many of these have typified the worldy conception of the college student; bright, aggressive, wellspoken, etc .. . But last week I had the misfortune to run across what Social- Psychologists’ have labeled the “Authoritarian Personality.” This young gentleman or “bigot” whichever the case may be, was explaining to a group of students his “very own” personal philosophy regarding racial prejudice. Many of you may not know this, but according to Dave Works (he asked to have his name printed) blacks and any other non-white race are inferior to the typical White Anglo-Saxon Protestant for several different reasons. One being “their un derdeveloped brain, you see we (whites) are not related to the evolution process and they (blacks) are; it’s very easy to see the distinct feature similarities between a black and an ape.” Secondly, “they act inferior, it’s obvious on our campus alone. I curse and swear, but I don't do it in public. Most of the coloreds I come across are like that.” Third, “if I was the president of a company, and there was a qualified colored, I would hire him as a machine to do his job, like picking up an 1.8. M. com puter.” Mr. Works stated that for these and a variety of other reasons, the white race has been and will continue to be the true breed of “main stream America.” I listened to these views with a sense of disgust which I’ve never felt before. Was the system which gave Dave his prejudicial attitudes, the same system that bestowed on me the value with which I will carry through life? If so, why don’t we all just throw in the towel and call it quits. Note: In 1928 a ce-tain Austrian made similar comments about another form of inferiority. Anonymous Dear Editor: I am writing to express my concern about the dismissal of Dr. Richard Tomsic. I know that there are many other students who share my feelings. I am a fifth term Psychology major here at the Behrend College. I feel Dr. Tomsic to be one of the most competent, dedicated, and effective professors here at Behrend. I am very disappointed and upset to hear of the termination of a man that I feel does much to enhance the academic quality of the faculty at this college. As a Psychology major 1 .am especially concerned with the quality of teaching in this branch of academics. Dr. Tomsic’s enthusiasm and interest in his field has been most influential and contributing to my own desire to pursue a career in the social sciences. Dr. Tomsic has a reputation for being a demanding professor. In my opinion, this perfection and dedication to the teaching of students makes his courses all the more challenging and beneficial to the student who cares to learn and achieve. I doubt that this letter will have any impact on this decision which is probably already confirmed. However 1 feel much better after writing and expressing my protest. Kathleen G. George 05 Psych-Soc. Welfare New Castle, Pa. To Dean Lane, Dean of Student Affairs: This September, the Student Union Board appointed Ms. Mary Ann Ladd to the position of Letters vanning viewpoints temporary Special Services Chairperson. At the time it was understood that the position would be made permanent during Winter Term, when Ms. Ladd’s activity in the Behrend Fall play would no longer be a problem. In the last six weeks, Ms. Ladd has created the largest most active, most enthusiastic S.S. committee to exist in, atleast, a year, and has put more time into the maintenance of the equipment in her care than any of the three preceding chairpersons. At the October 14, 1976 meeting of the 5.U.8., Mr. Greg Knightlinger, was voted in as Special Services Chairperson. This letter is a formal protest of this action by the 5.U.8., which can only be interpreted as sex discrimination. Ms. Ladd has proven herself to be the most competent, enthusiastic person to hold her position in over a year. She has a year of experience on the S.S. committee, which is a S.U.B. Constitutional requirement, as well as a practical asset. She is liked and respected by the S.S. committee. The only qualification of Mr. Knightlinger is that he is male. Please understand that no request is being made that you do anything that you do not deem proper. Some of the members of the S.S. committee have refused to work for Mr. Knightlinger, but general boycott has been called. It is only wished that the sexist policies of Mr. Jay DiFrank and the 1976 Student Union Board be Easy Come-Easy Go ATTENTION FACULTY: Do you have tenure? Was your last evaluation good? Have you published lately? If you can answer no to any of these, you can play Behrend College’s new lottery game “Here Today, Gone Tomorrow.” Submit yt ur name to the Faculty Lottery Bin as soon as possible, and you may be the next winner. A i r\ Enter Today! Good Luck! K. McGinnis Did you ever want to be alone, have peace and quiet, to really get into that history book you’ve been ignoring for so long? If you have ever attempted any of these, you probably have experienced the frustration that is such an intrinsic part of the atmosphere here at Behrend. In other words, there are no places to study on this campus. If you commute, you at least have the satisfaction of knowing you can go home and lock yourself in your room. If you live on campus, this is not the case. Even though you may have your own room or in most cases, one-half of a room, you’re extremely lucky if you go undisturbed for 15 minutes. This is hardly the atmosphere needed to stimulate the learning power. So, the typical dorm student packs his books and heads down to the library. When he arrives here, he is in awe to find that the noise is no better than that of the dorms. I can’t figure out what the problem is that exists here, be it ignorance on the part of the student or just the lack of discipline on the part of the librarians. Despite the noise level, this persistent student, anxious to gather knowledge, buries his head in his history Yours truly, 4i ,s I See It Behrend Collegian placed on record. Thank you. Richard A. Mary Ann Ladd was never “appointed” to the position of Temporary Special Services Chairperson but rather was permitted to voluntarily fulfill the duties of this position until winter term when she would be interviewed for the position, if it was still vacant On October 14, 1976 Mr. Knightlinger was in terviewed and accepted as special services chairperson. In the opinion of the 5.U.8., Mr. Knightlinger is extremely qualified, as he is in electrical engineering and it was he who helped design and build the Disco light and sound equipment. This is not to downgrade Mary Ann Ladd but Greg Knightlinger is more qualified for the position and was available to take over during fall term where Mary Ann Ladd was not. K.E.C.) by KurtCavano Executive Editor book. He finally gathers together enough concentration to begin to comprehend what drove Alexander the Great to do what he did when the lights go out and the librarian says I’m sorry, but it’s 10:00 and everyone has to leave.” Does the administration really feel that the students here at Behrend put their, books away at 10:00 p.m., brush their teeth and go to bed???? There is only one reasonably quiet place to study on this campus after 10:00, the faculty dining room. Two years ago there was a quiet lounge in the upstairs of the R.U.B. that could be used for study purposes, but that too has been removed (to provide more office space). It’s evident that the Behrend community is desperately in need of quiet study space. What’s the possibility of extending the hours of the library until 12:00 midnight on weekdays and at least until 10:00 on weekends? I’m sure there will be enough “business” to make it worthwhile. And what about the noise level? If the librarian would enforce the rules, the noise level would decrease. Something needs to be done. If we can’t study, how can we learn. This is it, folks. I must resign this position in which I have served you for the past two terms. The only alternative I have to resignation is the prospect of facing arbitrary judgement by dubious standards (which would be set up by people who have given me the shaft in the past) after a forced suspension. Why should I subject my journalistic abilities, standards and performance to the appraisal of people who have little, if any, expertise in this area? According to a. letter I. received from the Student Affairs Advisory Board, if I had not resigned, they would have: 1) suspended me until December 31, 1976 2) developed their own stan dards of “Quality Journalism” 3) defined editorial staff responsibilities Mr. Hemberger, Chairman of the Student Affairs Advisory Committee, said in his letter that developing standards and defining responsibilities would be a joint responsibility of his committee and the Collegian’s editorial staff. Then Mr. Hemberger writes that “Upon resumption of his position as Editor in Chief, Mr. McKay’s performance will be evaluated in terms of defined standards and responsibilities. Variation from standards will be evaluated by members of the student affairs advisory com mittee and members of the editorial staff. Actions deemed to be not in accordance with stan dards of quality journalism will be cause for the immediate and permanent suspension of Mr. McKay.” So, in effect, they would try my case according to laws that don’t yet exist. Is this justice? No, just the workings of the Behrend bureaucracy as manipulated by Kurt Cavano, Janet Mazur, and a few other patsies who went along for the ride. Knowing that some of the people on our editorial staff are the ones who-brought the issue of ousting me before the Advisory Board leads me to suspect that the outcome would be pretty predictable. When Mr. Cavano, Miss Mazur, Mr. Leidtke, Miss Mary Jo Santilli, and Miss Gail Peck and I The Collegian Staff (under new management) extends its wishes for good luck to everyone during finals week (if that’s what’s needed), as well as our wishes for a very haonv and well-deserved Thanksgiving break. Then, in a private meeting of just the Advisory Board that night, they came up with their recommended course of action mentioned earlier. They really gave me the screws and left me with virtually no alternative but to resign. My letter of resignation was sent Monday, and a following letter protesting the mistreat ment of my case should, by now, have reached Dean Lane and-or Director Kochel. I hate to leave this paper in the hands of those whom I think will be given control, but I myself must move on to bigger and better things. Before I leave, I must give you, my beloved readers, a warning about the tacit censorship which may be instilled by my suc cessors. It stinks. No matter how many ads it gets, I personally think it is the most poisonous venom that could possibly be injected into a student publication. The ad campaign being done by the ad manager, Shanley, so far seems highly successful. In fact, unless something unforeseen oc curs, the very next issue of this publication which I am leaving should be six pages. He is to be commended of the fine job he has done in only a month. I have nominated the name of Colleen Gallagher to the Advisory Board for consideration as my successor, but most likely Janet Mazur will take over no matter what. One last, but very important thing. Throughout my two terms as Editor-in-Chief, I have enjoyed the support you, the students for whom this paper is made, have always given me. I have also appreciated the constructive criticism we sometimes get and need. But more than anything, it has been my pleasure to have served you. This winter term I will once again be the first News Director of WBCR. I can hardly wait to move back on the air and enter the modern technological wonder called radio.
