Although the Academy Awards
race does not really merit too
much attention from many
people's viewpoint; the contest
still demands comment since they
are probably the most widely
known awards for an art form in
America today.
Most people's objections to the
awards stem from the fact that
members of the Academy of
Motion Picture Arts and Sciences
are the people who vote the best
picture and best cinematography,
actor, etc., according to the in
dividual member's craft branch.
This process is used for the
original ballot from which the
five top vote getters in each
category are listed as the
nominees. The final ballot is then
made with all members voting
for the best of the five nominees
as they see fit. Consequently
there is a feeling amongst many
that the awards become- a
popularity contest. Many awards
are given out of sympathy for the
winner, whether he has been
nominated many years in a row
and never won or has been a once
successful performer who is
getting on in age and needs a
morale as well as career boost.
I'm not insinuating that the
awards are fixed but that there
remains a shade of darkness on
the concept that the awards are
given to the one who most
deserves it for a singular per
formance or work.
the awards have become simply
disillusioned and disregard the
whole thing. Yet the Oscars are a
supportive element of the shaky
American movie industry since
the awards are known to many

between 10 and 33 per cent of the
college population.
A 1972 study by Dr. Dan J.
Peterman, assistant professor of
human development at Penn
State, found that 32.8 per cent of
the undergraduates who
responded indicated they had
done so.
Counselling these unmarried
couples is made more difficult
because of the lack of thorough
research on the practice, ac
cording to Dr. Lewis.
"It should aid people who
counsel cohabitating couples to
know that the level of com
mitment may vary," he explains,
noting "unmarried cohabitants
include a whole range of
relationships."
Although there have been no
definite studies on the reason that
more and more college students
are living with members of the
opposite sex, Dr. Lewis suggests
that the relaxation of rules on
campuses around the nation
would be a contributing factor.

people including the average
movie-goer who might be more
apt to buy a ticket to that which
boasts an Oscar win.
Now the Awards show aired
this past Monday evening seemed
to be a fair contest amongst a
group of very talented people. In
the best picture category, the
winner was One Flew Over the
Cuckoo's Nest, an all around
excellent film. But I must add
that Dog Day Afternoon was at
least as good if not better than
Cuckoo's Nest. I must refrain
from wondering if the anti-hero as
well as the content of Dog Day
was not a bit disturbing or of
fensive to some people.
In the best actor category,
there seemed to be a tight race
between Jack Nicholson for
Cuckoo's Nest and Al Pacino for
Dog Day. Both has been
nominated many times in the past
few years and were due for an
Oscar according to popular
thought. Nicholson won, however,
and I must admit that although he
was magnificent as McMurphy in
Cuckoo's Nest, Pacino gave a far
more demanding performance
that required considerable
emotional range and intensity.
Again I could be quite wrong but I
feel the character that Pacino
played was somewhat offensive
to some and therefore turned
them away from judging the true
merits of his performance. Also
the fact that Pacino made clear
his negative feelings about the
awards soon after he was
nominated did not help his bid.
The race for best director
seemed to be fair considering that
one had to pick a single winner out
theorized that those who live
together as a trial marriage do so
because they think they'll have a
better chance of staying married
once they do decide to get
married. Others, who choose to
live together instead of getting
married, he suggests, do so out of
love" and because of a
disillusionment with marriage
perhaps caused by the high rate
of divorce.
The third group of cohabitants
isolated in the study are those
who live together as a temporary
arrangement "probably because
it's the 'in' thing to do," according
to Dr. Lewis. He says there is a
certain amount of peer pressure
encouraging students on college
campuses to try cohabitation.
Other contributing factors are a
growing independence from the
family, and greater opportunity
for students to live off campus.
"But the primary reason for
cohabitation," Dr. Lewis points
out, "is that they want to do it."

Preparations for the Spring
Arts Festival are well underway,
as was witnessed at Tuesday's
meeting of the Spring Arts
Committee. Tim Grosser opened
the meeting with a tentative
schedule of the festival activities.
Spring Arts Week will be from
May 3rd to May 9th. The week's
activities include films, art
exhibits, and the Erie Philhar
monic which will perform on
camps. The weekend will be filled
with activities including jazz
bands, rock groups, bluegrass
bands, horse shows, all night
movies, and sky diving.
In addition, the Festival will
feature photography and painting
exhibitions. These exhibitions
will be open to all students.
Information will be available
April sth on how to enter your
work. Applications will also be
available for the variety show.
Students are encouraged to come
and try out. This year's Spring
Arts Festival is shaping up to be
filled with variety and talent.

part of it?

were all extremely praiseworthy.
Anyone of them truly deserved it,
including Milos Forman who won
for Cuckoo's Nest.
The supporting actor race is the
one with which I have con
siderable comment. I have
nothing against George Burns,
who won for The Sunshine Boys
but he was obviously voted for out
of sympathy. There were at least
two other excellent performances
in the category, that of Brad
Dourif's sensitive portrayal of
Billy in Cuckoo's Nest and Chris
Sarandon's performance in Dog
Day Afternoon.
A majority of the technical
awards such as cinematography
and set-decoration-art direction
went to Stanley Kubrick's Barry
Lyndon. The film more than
deserves the honors, as I'm sure
no one would argue.
Well, the Academy Awards will
probably continue to proceed as
in the pak, but as long as people
don't take the selection of winners
at face value,-they will be better
able to choose films.

Dußois is one of the most im
portant symbolic figures in Black
History. He appeared larger than
life with a productive career that
spanned nearly a century. He was
a fighter, not a compromiser; and
a romantic, and a revolutionary
in a world full of appeasement
and inactivity. No one could ever,
or would ever, dare accuse him of
"selling out to the man." He was
definitely his own man.
He was born in 1868, and in the
short span of 28 years he
published his first book and began
his literary career which
established him as one of the
most prolific Black writers of all
times. His works include
sociological studies, essays and
sketches, biographies and
autobiographies, history books,
fictional novels and poetry. As
