Page Two commentary By Bob Wetmore Managing Editor Well, this week many people would expect to see a retraction printed of the previous week's article. Sorry, folks. It just isn't going to happen. Some people were highly critical, and yet others were very complimentary. So let's set a few facts straight. For those who were critical of the opening of last week's com mentary, may you be informed that this was a direct quote from an advertisement by S.T.E.M., a National Security Agency, and was an example of an actual case. So please explain to me it's irrelevancy again. If, in any case, it seemed that I had given Security the respon sibility of prosecution, it was unintentional. Though, this might have slipped in somewhere along the line, I am totally ignorant of, and I admit it, ap plications of these cases such as charges, hearings, and prosecutions and I intend to check this out at greater length U.S. noted as 'throw-away society' America is number one on the list as being the "throw away society." 134 million tons per year of solid waste material is ram pantly discarded throughout this modern and industrious nation. But why? Because Americans tend to be careless and thoughtless when it comes to their comforts and conveniences. 13 million tons of glass, over 60 billion cans and well over 60 million tons of paper are thrown away when they could have very easily been taken down to a recycle-return center in a neigh boring area. There are those people who do care about this type of wasteful pollution and there are those who are concerned with the depletion of our forests and natural resources. It seems that rather than report that Security is prosecuting improperly (they have nothing to do with this) I should have cited the fact that Security is merely functional. It serves the purposes of prevention, detection, and apprehension only. Without witnesses or reports of incidents, Security and their branch of the Administration can do nothing. So everyone keep quiet and maybe we can raise Cain and still get away with it. After all, it's Student Affairs and not Security that prosecutes cases. Sure, we don't want this campus to become a police state, but it's not beer parties and harmless pranks we're con cerned about it's the vandalism and actual crimes that endanger other people's lives and property. Behrend College is an admitted sanctuary. And I intend to find out what's been done to make good the wrongs that some people have committed. Even if it means stepping on some toes and knocking out a few teeth. are here at Behrend and it shows because a recycling project is going on right now. A group of students have set up stations in the lobbies of each dorm and a station on the first floor of the Reed Building. A box has been placed at each station where many students have discarded glass. paver and numerous cans. Each week the recycling_ group collects the waste, sorts and prepares it to be taken down to the Return Inc. of Erie. The project has been extremely successful thus far. The solid waste group appreciates the united concern shown towards the recycling project and hopes it will continue. Together we can make Behrend a cleaner, better place. And lack of specifics, such as names, places, dates and sources seem to crumble the foundations of a libel suit. Next week, you should expect to see Student Affairs in the picture. Until then, let's hope the ship doesn't sink. Candid message for the week: Faculty, don't worry, there's more yet to come! Dear Ron Wayne, (Rex Reed? ) In response to your enlightening "Reel and Script" review con tained in the January 22 edition of the Behrend Collegian, I was amused to discover an obvious relationship between the com mentary published in Steven Scherer's Guide to Movies on T.V. (concerning the films "Rebecca" and "Take the Money and Run") and the opinions that comprise your article, which I assume are yours. The articles are strikingly similar and in many instances are exactly the same. I don't mean to be insolent, Rex (Ron?) - I know that your evaluations have been objectively derived from your highly - esteemed and lucid eye for en tertainment criticism - but don't you think the devoted Collegian readers deserve a more dynamic entertainment editor, and not one that so blatantly plagiarizes such a well-known source of film reviews? Is the Collegian starved for talent, or are you just biding your time on the road to jour nalistic fame and fortune? If I am wrong about my accusations, I am sorry - I suppose your cosmopolitan vision could have been distorted by images of stellar magnitude. Oh, pardon my ignorance - I'm excluding the possibility of you being a telepath having no control over the malicious transmissions and demands you receive. In the -future I trust you will uphold the traditional ethics of creativity so divinely revered in newspaper publishing circles. If you refuse, then I suggest you stop insulting us degenerated and depraved readers, and concentrate on endeavors requiring less demanding aptitudes than criticism. T. A. Cowley 6th term Economics Pre-Law Pertaining to the accusations in the above letter, I feel obligated to tell you the truth. To begin - with, as entertainment editor of this paper, I must assume certain responsibilities to the reading public of Behrend College. One is Job hunting to be aired On Thursday night, February 12th, the Behrend College Radio Series will air the program, Job Hunting Tips for the7o's. Speakers on the program in clude Behrend alumni: Ms. Claudia Brown, class of 74 and Mr. Torn Stanger, class of 75; also interviewed will be Mr. Chris Thorton, a student and Ms. Maryanne Koschier, Counselor in the Career Development and Placement Center. The moderator will be Michel Small, faculty person at Behrend. The speakers will comment on some of the problems that YOU previewing the films sponsored by the Behrend Student Union Board. I. of course, cannot have seen every one of those films before it is presented here. Some, I've seen before, and, more than often, some time back. Unfor tunately, the above two conditions force me to do one of two things; refer to a worthy source of in formation; or totally neglect those films I haven't seen or of which I can't remember the details. Because of unwavering dedication to the Collegian, I decided to do the former. Whether my doing constitutes a case of plagiarism, it seems quite vague, since in the certain sivations when I needed to consult the book, I often mixed its in formation with facts and opinions from my memory, making it cumbersome to quote Mr. Scheurer. I must add, that I do not consider Behrend students ( those few that read the newspaper) to be anything less than my equal, and write for their best intersts. Thank You, Ron Wayne Mr. Corbran Congratulations on your editorial in the January 29th edition of the Behrend Collegian. I support your "pro-Behrend" proposal. And I agree that we need a full-time Public Relations Officer. As the director of our Behrend Players Productions, I meet with members of the Erie Community quite often. How frustrating it is to find that the majority of community citizens are un familiar with our Student Union Board programs, our fine faculty and staff, and our 4-year status. I have in my office an article from the Erie-Times that is headlined "Fund Raising at Erie's Three Colleges." The three colleges referred to, of course, are Gannon, Mercyhurst, and Villa Maria. What can we do to inform the public about Behrend's recent and continuing exciting development? You have certainly provided an excellent example. So tune in this Thursday night at Bp.m. over WQLN—FM. 91.3. oints view Hopefully, others will follow Sincerely, Arno Selco Dear Paul: It is debatable who is to blame for the recent strike at the Erie County Hospital: the Com missioners, who can easily grant themselves raises, or the em ployees. There are two sides to every argument. I'm sorry that you have no compassion for the employees. Many of us who have relatives and who went out to help during the stoppage believe that people who take on such a "shitty" (actually as - well . as figuratively) job earn all the money they receive and more too. I'm very happy they got most of what they asked for, and only wish that the Commissioners had agreed to it sooner. Sincerely, Sally Coleman P.S. The Union would like binding arbitration; it's the County that's holding it up. Editor's Note: I disagree with your opening statement. The employees are the people who actually voted to strike, therefore. the blames lies directly on them. That the commissioners have control over their own wages does not, in my mind, excuse striking in this case—nothing does. • People who take such •shitty" jobs know what they're getting into when they start. (And volunteers are. naturally, going to be awed at the conditions of such an institution.) I, too, am happy that the employees got most of their requests—l'm sure they deserve more. I believe. though, that it could have been done in a better way. I would like to clarify something...l am not against the employees, nor am I for the administration—my concern lies with the patient. Both sides must strive for a better way. Paul A. Corbran (Continued on Page 4)
