November 6, 1975 Sports report By Mark Reese and Kathy Hoyt Last Saturday, November 1, the Behrend volleyball team held a meet against Edinboro and Allegheny Colleges in Erie Hall. The starting line-up included Sue Ziegler, Barb Eaglen, Diane Schaffer, Pris Hamilton, and Kathy Hoyt. Substitutes were Cindy Irwin, Carol Ruffing, Denise Noel, Mary Dahlkemper, and Jerri Mehinik, who was in jured before the game. Behrend lost the first match to Allegheny 7-15 and 11-15. The Cubbies also dropped a match to Edinboro, 6- 15 and 7-16. Then Monday, Behrend again played at home and defeated Mercyhurst 15-12, 13-15, and 15-12. The girls evened the evening out, unfortunately, by losing to Grove City, 1-15 and 8-15. Denise Noel suffered•an injury in the Edinboro game and will probably be out the season. Jerri Mehlnik also was sent home in a east, she too will be out for the season. Behrend will attempt to pull its injured team back together tonight, at 7 p.m., when they play host to Allegheny and Mercy hurst. Soccer Last Wednesday, the Behrend Cubs' soccer team wound up the `75 season with a good win over Grove City College. Grove City scored first, eight minutes after the start of the game, putting the pressure on when their outside right and outside left teamed up to put one by from the center. Just three minutes later, Behrend's outside left, Gary Zemanski with an assist from inside left Mark Rudolf, drove the ball in from the corner to tie the score at 1-1, where it remained till well into the second half. At the twenty-three 'minute point of the second half, Grove City broke the tie by scoring on a play by the center forward and left halfback. Some fans were already figuring on overtime play at that point, when, with just thirty seconds left in the game, Behrend scored again, insuring the win and dashing Grove City's hopes for good. The winning goal was achieved by left fullback Mike Warner. The statistics show that Behrend played the better game _from the technical point of view also. The Cubs made twenty-five shots to Grove City's seventeen and there were assists on all goals. Behrend with three, Grove City only two as shown by the score. The win_ brings the Cubs' win - loss record for the season to an impressive 8-4. Throughout the season the Cubs have scored thirty-seven times in varsity games, and been scored on only seventeen times by all their opponents combined. A fine, successful season for all Behrend to be proud of.
