Cubs top Geneva
Overtime win
By Mark Reese
Sports Editor
Tuesday afternoon, October
14th, soccer fans and students
here at Behrend got the chance to
see one of, if not the most exciting
matches of the season. The Cubs'
opponent was Geneva College.
The action was very close and
tense, pushing the game into two
periods of overtime before
Behrend beat them four to three.
Behrend established a
dominating control early in the
game, and 'continued it
throughout, making 45 shots to
Geneva's 5. But it was one of
those odd situations that
sometimes develop in soccer
where the other team got in to
make a few shots count. Geneva
got the first goal of the game late
in the first half, when their inside
left kicked on in from the left
front of the goal area, ending the
half with Behrend down by one.
The second half continued much
the same type of play, and
Geneva scored again seven and a
half minutes in, with a kick by
their outside left from the same
spot as the first score. It was

The era of Slavery in America
was one of resurgent
totalitarianism, of big lies, big
whips and unimaginable
atrocities. The record of
resistance to slavery forms an
interesting chapter in American
history. One which tells of endless
struggles to give dignity to
human life. And even though the
history of southern American
bondage reveals that man can be
enslaved under certain con- .
ditions, it also shows that his love
for freedom is hard to crush_
The plantations in the south and
the.planters themselves were of a
wide variety. There were big
plantations with a thousand or
more slaves. There were small
farms with one or two slaves. And
then there were the planters with
twenty to thirty slaves. Scholars

Black Student Union more active

The initials BSU have begun to
appear on signs and posters in
noticeable places around cam
pus. The majority of people
ignore it because they fail to
realize that it is an abbreviation
for an organization and not that of
someone's name. It is an
organization that had at one time
been characterized by obscurity,
but which has recently become a
recognizable unit on campus. An
organization which definitely has
the material for success and the
prominence that usually ac
companies it. The organization is
The Black Student Union.
BSU, as it is referred to, has
justifiably taken its place within
the mainstream of student
organizations on campus.. With
the opening of the Union's office
this month in the RUB, the Union
has established the fact that they
do indeed mean business.
But for an organization which
has existed approximately five
years, not too many people—
students and administration in
clusive—know much about the
Union.
The • Black Student Union was
organized in 1970 when a group of
Black students on campus felt a
sense of duty in 'regards to
fulfilling the needs of the Black
student in a predominately white
institution such as Penn State. Its
objectives as stated in its
preamble are ".. to establish a
positive image which will foster
a postive attitude..necessary in
order to insure positive' in
volvement- in campus affairs in
regards - to our conduct as
Blacks."
Prior to the last two years the
BSU was, to a degree, in a state of
inactivity_ However, throughout
the past two years the Union has
almost thirty-three minutes into
the half when the Cubs retaliated
with a goal by inside left Mark
Rudolf, assisted by inside right
Paul Lloyd, from the center.
Then, just twenty-seven seconds
before the end of the game,
Behrend scored again, tying the
score and making overtime play
necessary. Inside right Paul
Lloyd got the goal with a long
kick from the corner of the field.
So the first ten minute overtime
period began. Geneva was the
first to score, with a ball put in by
their center forward, but since
soccer - overtime isn't sudden
death, the Cubs go the chance to
score again, and tie the score,
forcing a second overtime period.
Left fullback Mike Warner
assisted inside left Rudolf to
make the point. In the second
period, left fullback Warner, with
an assist by outside left Gary
Zemanski, punched one in for the
fourth and final score. The Cub
defense prevented all Geneva
attempts in the last half of the
period, so the final score saw
Geneva vanquished by one point,
4-3.

More letters
Dear Editor,
I would like to take this time for
the opportunity of thanking the
infamous being who created the
fine display of ignorance in the
ground floor Reed Building men's
room. It seems that some college
level students can't grasp the fact
that toilets are for a purpose.
They consider it their duty to use
the floor. The morbid sense of
humor° possessing this person or
persons, as the case may be, is
pretty disgusting to the next
distinct division between House
Slaves and Field Slaves. House
slaves were the elite of slave
cabaret for those who just like to
have fun. Also, on Thursday,
October 23, BSU will be spon
soring a Halloween Party in the
RUB Faculty. Dining Hall
beginning at 8:00.
The success of an organization
depends upon the support they
receive from the student body.
BSU needs support in order to
succeed. Don't ignore BSU
because you think it-'s "for
Blacks only." BSU is essentially'
for the people. All the people.

New volleyball club
Another new club has been

catalyst to making volleyball a
varsity sport here at Behrend.
Late in February and in early
March, the regular volleyball
season begins and tournament
play will be a frequent activity of
the club then. Right now the club
