January 23, 1975 Cubs Split Pair by Jay Schonthaler Sports Editor The Behrend basketball squad split a pair of games in last week's play and kept their season mark above .500 in the process. The Cubs, 7-6 as of last night's game with Geneva, last Wed nesday traveled to Pitt- Johnstown where they dropped a 97-88 decision, but returned home on Saturday and found the familiar surroundings favorable, routing Eisenhower, 87-65. The Cubs kept things close throughout the entire contest against Pitt-Johnstown. Behrend led, 22-20, at the ten minute mark in the first half and trailed by five at half-time. With ten minutes left in the game they had moved to within four. But Pitt-Johnstown kept up their relentless scoring pace right to the final whistle en route to the nine point victory. "Pitt- Johnstown is not a great defen sive team, but they score like crazy," said Behrend coach Roger Sweeting. Despite Johnstown's high powered offensive display, Sweeting admitted it wasn't the most unexpected occurrence of that game. "We weren't sur prised by Pitt-Johnstown. I think we were surprised by ourselves in that we were in the ball game and had a chance to win it." John stown is ranked sixth in District 18. Against Behrend, their leading scorer was sidelined with an injury. Sweeting pointed out that the high - score resulted from a combination of hot shooting and sluggish defense. "I was very pleased with our offense. It was one of our better offensive per formances of the year." "Now I've got to do a selling job on defense and show some people that it's no good to score eighty points if you give up ninety seven." Behrend has gone over the 80 point mark on offense in each of their last four outings. -Mark - Chesko• was thigh - `for Behrend with 22 points. "Mark played extremely well in that game, probably his best game of the year," remarked Sweeting. Larry MacAleer followed with 16, Above the mass of arms and legs rises a Behrend Cub to the occasion of pulling in a rebound in the game against Eisenhower. Evans had 12 to highlight the Cub scoring Against Eisenhower all 12 of the Cubs figured in the scoring as Behrend rolled to an easy win. More importantly, though, was the fact that Behrend came through with that strong defen sive showing hoped for by Sweeting. There were several key defensive performances turned in by the Cubs. Jim Davis had the assignment of guarding Eisenhower's Neil Kromer, their leading scorer who last year scored 34 points against Behrend in one game. Davis' task was to keep Kromer from going inside with the ball and this Davis did, holding his man scoreless for the first 30 minutes. Kromer ended the night with five points, all coming with Davis resting on the bench. Behrend's guards, MacAleer and Pat Gahr, also stood out defensively. MacAleer hounded their floor leader, Kevin Berkley, making it difficult for him to set up the offense and, at times, forcing Eisenhower out of any offensive pattern whatsoever. Gahr held the other Eisenhower guard to one field goal in the first half, by which time Behrend had moved to a 48-27 lead. Sweeting noted that the pressure defense played by his club made the difference in the game. Man for man, he felt the Cubs were the quicker team and elected to go with an attacking, pressing defensive defense. "When -we play pressure defense we have a tendency to foul too much or give up the back door play. I hate to simplify, but quickness is the most important thing in pressure defense." Chesko again led the Cub scoring parade with 22 points. Sweeting added of him, "In the last three games he's pumped in quite a few points for us." In thosethree, games he raised his average fr om eight to just under 12 points per game. Other top scorers in the game for Behrend included Davis with 16, Larry Szoszorek, and Jeff Gillette with eight each, and Behrend Collegian MacAleer and Gahr, both collecting six. Last night the Cubs had their hands full as they traveled to Geneva to take on the Golden Tornadoes, whose basketball team is much better than its nickname. They feature a 5'4" guard with a 21 point average (that's points, not blocked shots) as well as a 6'9" center by the name of Soule, currently the leading rebounder in District 18 with 16 grabs a game.
