In the short time that I have
been at Behrend, I have heard
numerous complaints about
student activities. Many students
feel that the program here leaves
much to be desired. The com
plaints are directed more
towards such activities as con
certs, recreation, social ac
tivities, lectures, and the like.
The majority of schools corn
parable in size to Behrend have
much more to offer in ' this
respect. •
Why is Behrend behind in its
activities.program? Well, the one
and only reason is money:
Behrend is allocated money for
student activities from Penn
State. This year Behrend
received $11,690, which includes a
supplemental appropriation of
$4,890. The SGA is responsible for
disseminating this money into all
student activities—such as
student groups, publications.
etc. in addition to the activities
in question. When comparing the
6100.000-plus that some colleges

for student activities, I have to
give an enormous amount of
credit to the SGA for doing the job
that they are. Now the question
is: Why is Penn State falling
behind in its appropriations to
Behrend?
In the years between 1961 and
1973, the student per capita ap
propriation for branch campuses
of Penn State fell 59 per cent,
from about $13.50 to under $6 per
student. In this same time period,
the full-time enrollment had risen
311 per cent, the yearly tuition
was up 84 per cent, and the state
appropriation for the University
had risen .405 per cent. These
figures are shocking. Even
though a supplemental ap
propriation was made this year,
this still leaves us well behind
other schools.
There are ways in which we
could solve this - problem, such as
mandatory or voluntary ac
tivities fees or student generated
income. Most colleges and
universities have a mandatory
fee. At Penn State though.
Thank You
wish to extend our sincerest
thanks to Dean Lane and his
secretary.

everything is included within one
lump-sum tuition. There is no
reason .why we should pay for
something that is, or should be,
already included in the fee of the
university. The tuition at Penn
State is one of the higher tuitions
in the country and yet some of its
students are being neglected as
far as an activities program
which is up-to-date. WHY???

Since guitarist Robin Trower
split with Procol Harum, he has
teamed up with bassist-vocalist
James Dewar and drummer Reg
Isibore to produce a pair of
albums, "Twice Removed From
Yesterday" and "Bridge of
Sighs." Although Trower's talent
as a guitarist was apparent as a
member of Procol Harum,
especially on the "Broken
Barricades" album, his sound
was never quite as distinctive or
controversial as it is now. He has
in the past two years, which has
gained him both high acclaim and
outright criticism, not to mention
the financial benefits.
His most distinctive aspect is
that he sounds a lot like Jimi
Hendrix, only slower. In fact, he
sound so much like Hendrix that
it's imposSible for me to believe
that Trower is anything more
than a stone rip-off of Hendrix's
style. Trower has such a shtick
for copying Hendrix that he plays

An Aquarian woman loves her

An Aquarian has a sensitive

them won't always be carnal. He

Removed" album. Hendrix
played the very same at his
famous appearance at Monterey
in 1967. After listening to both
versions, I've got to admit that
Trower leaves a lot to be desired.
I'm not surprised at all by the
fact that after Hendrix died,
someone picked up his style.
Jimi's influence can be heard in
many areas of contemporary
rock. He experimented with and
innovated so many musical
techniques that it only follows
that he should have been a major
musical influence. The Eiseley
Brothers for example have done a
remarkable job of incorporating
various aspects of Hendrix's
style.
If someone were to carry on
with Jimi's work in a competent
manner and adapt and expand
what he has done, I would be
more than pleased. But to imitate
an artist's style as explicitly as
Trower had so done, and to do a
poor job off it at that, is really to
damage one's credibility as a
musician.
