Page Four Preregistration Schedule-Winter Term '74 All students returning to Behrend for the Winter Term 1975 should pre-register according to the attached schedule. We ask that particular attention be given to the explanation of pre-registration at the end. ADVISING PERIOD Advising begins Wednesday, October 23. Students should consult with their faculty advisors in advance for an appointment during the advising period indicated on the pre-registration schedule. A master advisor list is posted in the following locations: Reed Building (first floor); Niagara, Lawrence, and Perry Halls. A reference copy will be available in the Records Office (Main Building). IMPORTANT: Please check the list to verify your assignment before' seeing your advisor. Many students have been reassigned to new advisors since Fall registration and this is the only way to be sure you are seeing the right advisor. Your advisor will assist you in preparing a No. 2 card and will furnish you with an Alternate Course Selection form, a No. 4 card, and a College Data card. PREREGISTRATION The pre-registration station will be located in the Quiet Lounge (2nd floor), Reed Union Building. The station will be open from 9:30 a.m. to 12 noon and from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. . • The materials prepared with the advisor should be brought to the Pre-registration station on the assigned date (see schedule) and turned in for processing. Late pre-registration will be accepted at the station and processed as received. Materials are handled at the station in the order received. If the requested section of a course is filled, another section will be substituted wherever possible; failing that, the Alternate Course Request form will be used as needed to complete schedules. SCHEDULE VALIDATION On the validation dates given, students may pick up a copy of the schedule as processed and indicate ac ceptance of the schedule by signing for it. This "validates" the schedule; if a student does not sign, the course cards being held for him will be returned for reassignment to someone else. All students, whether or not they have pre-registered or validated a schedule must attend Registration (Wednesday, December 4) before going to classes Winter Term. ALL STUDENTS PLEASE NOTE: Students are sometimes confused about the purpose of validation and the relationship of preregistration to registration. It is hoped that the information given below will clarify those points. PREREGISTRATION is the selection of a schedule of courses for the coming term and takes place several weeks before the new term begins. REGISTRATION is the official enrollment process for the term and occurs a day or two before the start of classes. Preregistration offers the following advantages: —lf you preregister, you may validate your schedule—that is, sign for the courses you have been given and hold your place in those courses. This gives you a confirmed schedule for the coming term before you leave for the term break. —lf you preregister and validate your schedule, you do not need to come back a day before registration for advising. You need only be on hand for registration itself. —lf you validate your schedule at preregistration, you will go through' an abbreviated process at registration. Changes in a validated schedule are:made after registration by processing a Change of Schedule form (drop-add slip) through the Records Office. ' Students who do not preregister; or who preregister but do not validate a schedule, must return to the campus early to see their advisors before registration and must go through the longer registration process. Registration for Winter Term 1975 will take place on Wednesday, December 4; students not preregistered will return for advising, Tuesday, December 3. During the term break we will mail instructions for registration to all students at their home address. If these instructions are not received within a reasonable period of time before classes start, we suggest telephoning the Academic Services Office (814-899-3101) for the information. Students who appear for registration after the scheduled time will be charged a late registration fee of $lO. For unavoidable reasons, it is occasionally necessary to cancel a section or reschedule a class after preregistration has to en place. Therefore, we must reserve the right to change a validated schedule for ad ministrative purposes. All students affected by such a change will be informed at Registration and should process a change of schedule (drop-add) after Registration for any resulting adjustments to their schedule. Contact Linda Johnson at 899-9994 WORLD CAMPUS AFLOAT and Campagna Into Rhythm and Blues Ash Fine by Gay Catania Managing Editor Ash and Campagna excited blues enthusiasts at Behrend's Coffee House on Friday, October 18. Debby Ash held lead vocalist position with Michael c..ampagna producing melody and rythm on acoustic six and twelve string, steel body, and electric guitars. Sitting in on the session was Jimmy Calire, who added sax, piano, moog and background vocals. The group, originally from Buffalo, New York, proved their excellent ability with their opening selection, "Dust My Blues," by Elmor James. The strong blues accent was im mediately evident with some nice slide work on Michael's part, as well as Debby's influential and powerful vocals. The trio progressed into a "funky" tune entitled "Stealin'," in which the lead vocal spot alternated between each member. It was a nicely put together number with emphasized piano, which gradually built up to a strong, vocally-united finish. Next on the agenda was an original of Cam.- pagna's, "Let Us Sail Away."Ver satitity in tempo and feeling was ex pressed in this slow, Gospel-orientated number. "I'm Sitting on Top of the World" featured Cal ire on keyboards. Blues-filled keyboard progressions enabled Jimmy to "slip -and slide"...nice work! An added at traction of the moog-synthesizer was introduced in Ash's original "A Woman's Got To Know." In this number, Debby's vocals and lyrics reminded me of Bonnie Raitt, however, Debby produced a much clearer and stronger vocal ability. Total captivation and involvement brought the first set to an exciting close. The second set continued to express the trio's outstanding energy and ability. "Keep On Walking' " another original of Debby's was strictly blues in nature, keeping up with such basic blues' requirements as strong vocals and lyrics as well as moving in strumentation. Ash and Campagna along with Calire certainly did iustice to Robert Jonnson's "Walking Blues," in which Michaels overall guitar work can be described as nothing short of fabulous. Some fine sax additions were prevalent in this foot-stompin' tune. Calire's comic personality was presented in his original, "None of Your Jive." Again the basic blues guitar and keyboard work cannot go unmentioned. "It Used To Be So Easy", written by Debby Ash explained her feelings on performing. It was an emotion filled tune with a lot of meaning and a lot of room for in strumental and vocal expression. The closing selection for the second set was the somewhat popular "I'm Willing," in which the trio's original Eastvvay Bowling Lanes 4110 Buffalo Road ' Open Bowling Mon. Exceptiorta I harmonic arrangements produced by Michael on his twelve-string, opened the third set. Expertise, precise guitar work seemed to make Michael shine on the opening number. This jazzy -folk (imagine that!) type of selection enabled the other members to prove themselves on improvisions. The third set consisted of four fine tunes in which Debby's ability as a blues singer-was , , always noticeable. Influences of Aretha Franklin and Ella Fitzgerald began to show themselves as Debby_ belted out some "Lazy blues", during which the trio was at their best. The last half hour of performances left me totally captivated and with no words to express the fineness and professional attitude of Ash and Campagna with Calire. "I'm in Love Again", a simple mellow selection, again expressing the trio's untiedness, brought the evening's performance to a delicate conclusion. In totality, Ash and Campagna, assisted by Jimmy Calire, gave a totally captivating, overwhelmingly sensuous, energetic performance. Some members of the audience felt that the trio's selections were too long and drawn out, but realization of the blues culture calls attention to the need of improvisions, involvement and meaning. Communication and total involvement on behalf of the members of the band expressed the message of blues in a united manner. Surprisingly, each member was able to maintain their individuality while at the same time concentrate on unity. The general atmosphere of the performance made it easy to feel each note and word and at the times the blues aura produced made you feel like you were sitting in a smoke•filled Boston bar really "gettin' down." The performance of Debby Ash and Michael Campagna, with Jimmy Cal ire was one puzzle in which all the pieces fit perfectly.
