I have a real feeling about what
I am to write because it is the
first time I'm to expose some of
my feelings on women. I hope that
by the time I'm done I am not
listed in the category of
"Chauvinism".
I'm curious to know if the
philosophy of Intermural Com
petition is understood. Its basic
philosophy is one which allows
athletic competition on a non
varsity level. So with this thought
in mind I'll have to tear apart that
philosophy to look at the name
"Sexist", which has besieged Mr.
Stoner. one of our phys. ed.
personnel.
A female flag football team has
invaded the sanction of the int
tramural philosophy. They have
dared to challenge the
masculinity surrounding the
philosophy of intramural ac
tivities. I can only admit that Mr.
Stoner is genuine in his feelings.
After he explained to me his
thoughts I feel I can relate to you
those feelings through my own
words.
The strength of the intramural
in the past has been built on its
diversity and competition.
Competition then, seems to be the
major word here. Mr.' Stoner
notes that the men who play
female teams take the sport (or

I've made I must support. I know

Coach Stoner's grief. He is a

business. He believes that these

to all Behrend College students
thus, women have the right to
play flag football. As a result. I
understand the 1975-76 Flag
Football season will probably
include a women's division. I
hope all is appeased.
And now on to political matters.
This editorial falls right in the
middle of the SGA elections. I
must now give my political
convictions...
I've always considered Student
Government as well as the
Collegian a viable organization.
So naturally. I am biased by my
own past position. (president).
There are many candidates this
year who I feel meet the
qualifications by my standards.
This sounds like a very conceited
statement, but this all returns to
my first editorial. Many of the
offices this year are unopposed,
this will not weaken the strength
of the organization. And now to
name dropping •
Al Lotz is candidate for the
Senior class presidency. He is a
veteran and a student of late 60's
activism. This may make him
sound like a radical. He is a
radical. He believes in change for
Behrend by the means of student
unity. He is one man who will be a
true servant of the students. Now
on to the Junior class...
Mike Woods. who transferred
from another college has been at
Behrend for a year now. He too,
supports student unity, and as Al
believes commuters are the
major issue. He is an involved
student, and he cares for our
future.
The last candidate I wish to
'plug' is Jim Mahlon who is
running for Sophomore class
president. He I know best of these
candidates. I've had the op
portunity to live with him, so I am
aware of his political convictions
pertaining to Behrend. He is a
think-through person. adding a
touch of realism to just about
every issue. This I feel, is an
asset when a group of students
organize to effect student policy.
September 26, 1974
Now I feel there is an obligation
to fulfill on behalf of the non
candidate student. This of course
would be ,the vote, but that's not
all. Throughout the year the only
way the SGA becomes aware of
issues is by student input. This
means you've got to be watchdog
for Behrend. Don't take
everything for granted. Question
if something just doesn't seem
right. I made a statement last
year, and I would like to repeat
it:
"The real strength of the SGA
lies in the support of the
students."
A number of freshmen have
come to me and asked how to
become involved. To them, I
must say this: "If you can't find
an organization that appeals to
you. first of all, make your
opinion known. The prime way to
acheive this is to use the
Collegian. And if you are not the
literary- type, make known your
opinion to the SGA." I feel I have
expressed the means in which to
achieve student contentment. So
ends my political rap.
Back to student organization.
I AM AMAZED, that a non
sanctioned organization.
STUDENT STAFF, has not
received the publicity that it is
due. I promise the readers and
most of all. Dean Bainum, that an
article will appear in the next
issue that will explain the to the
Behrend College what the Hell
the Student Staff is all about and
how it can be of benefit to the
students. Many of you saw the
Staff in operation during
Orientation Week. Well, that's
one point in favor of the student
staff, now, let's see the Staff
operate effectively throughout
the_ entire year. I know this
organization wants to be _sanc
tioned by the Student Government
so there must be a feeling
generated among those members
that their organization is going to
work hard at establishing itself.
Your duty as a student. . . .
VOTE!!!
