Dean Bainum.
Behrend's Yellow Rose
by Gay Catania
Managing Editor
I experienced a beautiful and
rewarding interview. You must
be wondering what's so beautiful
and rewarding about an in
terview...it is explained with a
simple name, Ms. Roseland
Bainum. Ms. Bainum, Assistant
Dean of Student Affairs, is a new
addition to Behrend's faculty.
Formerly, Dean Bainum served
as special advisor to the
President at the Texas Women's
University at Denton. Texas.. As
Assistant Dean of Student Affairs
at Behrend, her responsibilities
include special admissions.
conduct standards and secondary
school relations.
Dean Bainum arrived on
campus on July 1. She informed
me that the general impression of
Southerners is that the population
of the Northern states was as
distant. barren and cold as the
regional area! However. upon
experiencing the inhabitants of.
Behrend College, she soon
discovered that the geographic
attitudinizal approach was way
off-key. Dean Bainum feels that
"the trees seemed greener" and.
"the air a little cripser" after the
students started arriving for Fall
term. In general, she feels that
the students brought "an array of
sunshine — along with them.
Believe me. it's a good_ feeling
knowing that a woman in her
position feels so strongly for the
student body. •
Behrend's aesthetic properties
From Bunnies to Behrend
by Alan Kirk
On September 29, the Student
Union Board will be pleased to
present an evening of jazz. At 8
p.m. in the Reed Lecture Hall. a
concert featuring the Monty
Alexander Trio will commence.
Monty Alexander shall be
presented in the style that is he at
his best. informal before a live
audience. His outlook on music is
as sunwashed as his history. He
was born in Jamaica and began
piano at the age of four. His
favorite type of music became
rhythm and blues calypso. This
style soon made him a regular at
Jilly's in New York and later at
the Playboy Club.
His music has also been in
fluenced by Louis Armstrong and
Nat King Cole. A list of his
favorite pianists. however. is
topped by Oscar Peterson and
Behrend Players cast for Sticks and Bones : Front row,
left to right. Virginia Dreibelb_us, Mark Studeh.mund, and
Craig Latimer. Back row. left to right. Mike Wolfram, Gene
Wirth, Tim Newell, and Cathy Lipinski.
Published by the students of the Behrend College, Pennsylvania State University
also left our new faculty member
awed. Dean Bainum stated that
the campus was definitely one of
beauty in location as well as in
character. However, her first
impression of Behrend was aided
by Dean Lane's patience and the
helpfulness of her secretary, Ms.
Josie Eyer.
The most stimulating aspect of
the interview was Dean Bainum's
positive attitude. A key statement
made by the Assistant Dean of
Student Affairs is that "Behrend
campus is a student oriented
institution" and continues to
stress the desire to keep it that
way. Ms. Bainum - feels that her
main purpose is to serve the
student. In order for her to
maintain that purpose it is
mandatory that the students
express their needs and offer
"constructive alternatives" for
their complaints with helpful and
welcomed suggestions. A "united
effort" between faculty and
students is necessary. In keeping
up her half of the bargain. Dean
Bainum is making herself
available to the student body
whenever and whenever the
need exists. Her "door is always
open" and she is also willing to
contact students in their dorms,
the cafeteria or wherever they
would feel most comfortable in
talking with her. -
Dean Bainum is a truly
remarkable woman in that she
wishes strong communication
with the students. Her attitude is
optimistic and sincere. Amidst
her strong character is an avid
Ahmad Jamol. Only thirty years
old, yet so broad a jazz spectrum.
is not only remarkable but
respectable.
The Trio is made up of equally
respectable musicians. Of
course, Alexander on piano. On
bass. Eugene Wright. achieved
world wide recognition while
playing with Dave Brubeck for a
dozen years. His firm but lig.ht
style is extremely hard to cap
ture on record. there should be no
problem Sunday night. Bobby
Durham, on drums, became the
best kept secret in jazz. Before
Alexander Trio he was with
Oscar Peterson. His style, to me,
is highly reminiscent of Kenny
Clarke, the founder of the quiet.
tough art of brush-work.
Together Durham. Wright and
Alexander form a rare com
bination of musicians in terms of
sports fan. "I really like that
game soccer." However, her
knowledge of the game isn't
exactly specialized. Dean
Bainum is the person on campus
to seek out for action. Stop by her
office; located on the second floor
of the Administration Building, or
call at 899-3101. ext. 244, and give
her a warm welcome to Behrend,
and if you can, some soccer
techniques...you too will find a
beautiful and rewarding ex
perience.
SGA Tickled
by Rosa Myers
. Staff Writer
On the evening of September 23,
Jim Armstrong was an especially
pleased SGA president. His two
fold pleasure arose from the fact
that student response to the
upcoming class elections has
been especially promising.
Students have applied for every
available position on class
cabinets resulting in a stack of
application ballots which the
association has not bothered to
count. The other source of
pleasure was the faces of some
interested students who took time
out to sit in on an SGA meeting.
The association has elected
Paul Seiffer to the faculty senate
and wishes to remind students
that those interested in offering
their services to the Safety
Committee, are urged to notify
members of the SGA who keep
their unity of purpose. Seeing the
Trio was very exciting for me and
I am sure you would enjoy it.
Tickets are $1 with an Activity
Card and without, admission will
be $2.50. Once again, I urge you to
come and experience what jazz is
all about. Discover-the depth and
passion in Monty Alexander that
is not usually possible with other
musicians.
Those Weary Bones
by Chuck Little
Last Monday, Tuesday, and
Wednesday evenings, readings
were held for "Sticks and Bones."
A lot of interest was shown in the
tryouts. On Wednesday. Sep
tember 18, the cast was selected.
The characters in the play stem
from the "Ozzie and Harriet"
television series. Therefore, the
main characters are named
Ozzie, Harriet, Ricky, and David.
The play, since it is a satire, does
alter the roles slightly.
Ozzie, the character that Craig
Latimer plays, is . a middle-aged
man who feels that he has lost his
youth much too quickly.
.Harriet_ will be played by
Virginia Dreibelbus. Harriet
spends her days making
chocolate chip cookies and
scooping up ice cream and fudge
for Ricky; she is the type of lady
who has all the time in the world
but no place to go.
David, played by Mark Studeh
mund, has just returned from
Viet Nam and is very disturbed
by the things he saw going on
there. The family can't un
derstand his problem and thus
don't know what to do with it.
Gene Wirth, as Ricky. portrays
a naive young kid who is con
stantly popping in and out of the
house saying "hi mom" and "hi
dad."_
addition to Behrend's faculty

slippery sidewalks, the condition
of the gym floor, adequate
lighting and space in the parking
lots. The only qualification
required is that one be a full time
student.

Fantastic
Opportunity
This year's homecoming has a
new date, and will take place
during this year's Autumn
Weekend, Saturday. October 26.
Alumni should greet this change
with a sigh of relief. Not only is
October definitely one of
Behrend's most beautiful months.
but for once the alumni will be
given adequate time to plan for
the event. The change was ab
solutely necessary due to the fact
that the list of names of alumni
couldn't be provided until Sep
tember 23. Even if invitations
were mailed immediately alumni
would've had only a few days at
the most to prepare for the
previously scheduled
homecoming on September 28.
Once a weekend affair, this
year's homecoming will last only
one day. This should also please
the alumni since the inability to
"get away" for several days was
one of last year's chief com
plaints. The schedule for the day
includes: brunch at the RUB
(buffet style) at 11:30, the soccer
game with Houghton College at 1
p.m., campus tours, and then,
finally, the dance and reception at
the Holiday Inn South at 8: 30 p .rn .
At the dance. Chuck Ventrillo
will provide entertainment. His
jazzy style was well received last
year and should help to make the
evening memorable. Plenty of hot
and cold hors d'oeuvres will be
served and there also will be a
private bar where students can
buy drinks without worrying
about "cards."
The dance, as always, will be
semi-formal (though students
often come in formal attire
anyway). Tickets will be on sale
Friday, September 27 until
Wednesday. October 23. For the
entire day (brunch, soccer game,
and dance) the cost will be $5.00
per couple. Tickets for the dance
only may be obtained at $3.00 a
couple.
