A returning player for next season Rick Kestle showed
some good form at second base. Second in the batting lineup
he usually could be counted on to get on base.
Cubs to Schedule
by Bud Ore
Staff Writer
The season's over and although
their record isn't impressive the
Behrend baseball team finished
'in fine style. Winning six of their
last ten games, they finished
their season on Wednesday
against Allegheny, a game which
won't be covered due to the
deadline of this paper.
Coach Stoner made this
remark about this year's team
concerning its win loss - record,
"We improved over last season,
and we're playing a tougher
schedule. Right now we are seven
and thirteen, with two to go."
Behrend baseball will be
getting better in the next few
years due to a proposed wider
curriculum by Dr. Fox, the new
Dean of Faculty. The increased
course program would give
Behrend more graduating
players, with four years ex
perience on the collegiate level as
compared to "the present system
with a majority of freshman and
sophomores playing.
Coach Stoner feels that this
increased number ofjunior and
senior atheletes could only im
prove the baseball team here at
Behrend.
"Many players develope a
change between their sophomore
and junior years of college. They
play a better mental and physical
game."
Another advantage of having a
four year program is that a team
can recruit for positions that it is
weak in. This would result
because of strength at the other
eight positions.
This year Behrend lost more
than it won. However, only in
three or four games were the
Although this years pitching staff had their share of
troubles, Tim Slaven came out with a winning season, with a
record of three and two. Here he is shown winding up for a
delivery in Saturdays game with Youngstown State.

Cubs down in the scoring
department. In all the rest of the
games the Behrend nine had held
a good solid lead before losing it
in the late innings. The record
could have been - easily 16-4 in
stead of the current 7-13 record.
The team as a whole had a good
hitting season. Jim Davis was
very consistent in his hitting as
he broke one record and closed in
on a number of others. Jim
Swaney proved to be a strong
clutch hitter and also made the
transition from catcher -to out
field very well. Throughout the
season, Jim got a good jump on
the ball as he made some very
fine catches. Both players will be
returning next season for another
shot at their positions.
In the pitching department,
Behrend had its share of troubles.
.John Marrucci who was expected
to be a strong asset to the team
this year was plagued with
tendoniiis. This caused him some
problems with his speed and
control but he still did a fair job
on the mound and in the hitting
department as well. He proved to
be another clutch hitter from
time to time.
Looking to next season, the
Cubs have about nine players
returning. Myles Johns will be a
likely starter next year on the
mound. A late starter this season
he came on and won both of his
starts. His wins came over
Youngstown State and Houghton
College.
Tim Slaven who is three and
two going into the final two
games with Allegheny will also
be returning next year. He too,
will be a probable starter_

Mercyhurst Wins District Title
Ott, Playoffs Lone Victor
by Craig Pederson
Sports Writer
Last Thursday, May 9, the
tennis team went to Westminster
for the District 18 playoffs to see
who would go to Kansas City for
the National Tennis Cham
pionship. The winner in team
play was Mercyhurst. Behrend
came in tied for seventh in the
eight team tourney.
Dave Ott took on John Davison
of Alliance and beat him 10-5 for
Behrend's only point of the day.
This took Dave into the semi-
Malone
Behrend. He proved he had a
good glove and batted an average
of .285. He will be returning next
season and as he is currently
enrolled in Education he will
probably be here for three more
years.
Other returning players are
Lee Niedzwecki, Mickey
Brocious, Roger Schlosser, Kevin
Campbell and Terry Solvedt.
Some new recruits will be
Chuck Hintz, a pitcher-first
baseman graduating from Strong
Vincent High School here in Erie.
Another Vincent Colonel coming
here will be Tom Lawless who
plays shortstop. From McDowell
High School will be Bill McMillan
who catches.
Next year's schedule promises
t o be - as tough as ever as Behrend
has added some teams and
dropped others. Some of our old
opponents will be Allegheny,
Mercyhurst, Gannon, Houghton,
Edinboro and Youngstown State.
Dropped from the list will be
Slippery Rock and Point Park.
Some new teams will be Thiel,
Geneva and Malone, Malone
promises to be a tough game as
they are one of the top teams in
the nation.
This fall there will be workouts
with some scrimmages with area
schools. When asked about a fall
season, Stoner said, "I'd love it.
The players are in better shape,
the weather is better and the
players are more or less still
going strong from their summer
seasons."
The National Committee
doesn't count the fall seasons in
their tournaments and all records
are unofficial. This year the
coaches from the tri-state area
will probably get together and
make a suggestion to the
National Council that the season
be changed. If they are suc
cessful in their efforts a better
brand of baseball will most likely
be seen.
..As for next year's Behrend

finals where he played the
defending champ Martin Sturges
of Edinboro. Sturges beat Dave in
straight sets of 6-1, 6-1. By the
way Sturges won the District 18
flight Championship.
From there Behrend went right
downhill. Mark Leonard lost to
Slippery Rock's Dave Levkanich,
1-2. The winner in Flight two was
Mercyhurst's Bill Byron.
Barry Healy then lost to Chuck
Willmore 10-6 with Jim Hay of
Mercyhurst winning the third
flight.
In the fourth flight Ken
Buchanan lost to Slippery Rock's
Bob Golmic 10-5, again with
another man from Mercyhurst
winning the flight. Rick Kobleur
this time. Don Fuller was bested
by Larry Kroeck of Slippery
Rock, with Tom Thompson
winning the fifth flight. Guess
where Thompson is from? You're
right Mercyhurst.
