May Z 1974 Tennis Schedule Very Heavy Team Overly "Aggressive" by Jim Coucelman Staff Writer Behrend's season record slipped to 2-5 last weekend as the tennis squad lost two and won one, playing three matches in three days. Thursday, the Cubs paddled Alliance 9-0 in their second shut out of the season. Friday, the Cubs hosted a superior Edinboro team and were shutout 0-9. Saturday saw the Cubs losing in Ohio to Malone 1-8. So far this year, the Cubs have either won big or lost big. The reason for this, according to Coach Lauffer, is simply that there is a large difference in ability between the various teams in the district. However, Lauffer thinks this situation wi ll change. "I would be surprised if more than one of those remaining matches is 9-0." A good indication concerning the rest of the season occurred last Saturday at Malone. Hazelton's 28 points put them fourth in a six team field. In distaff swimming Behrend took Hazelton 58-55 in an eight team field with Ogontz at 51 and McKeesport at 30 points and fourth place. Behrend's men's 200 freestyle relay team blazed to a record of 1:37.72. Those who participated were Gary Moras, Danny O'Leary, Larry Matz and Chris Messenkoff. Matz won the 100- yard freestyle in 55.58 and came Behrend Mens Volleyball took sth place hi Commonwealth Tournament Last Saturday Although the team lost 1-8, there were four matches that went to three sets. Behrend was close but not close enough. Playing three matches in three days may seem to be a -for midable task but Lauffer didn't feel any real disadvantage from it. "It's a matter that you have to get used to it." Lauffer also pointed out that Thursday and Friday's matches were both shutouts and therefore short in duration. "The thing that has hurt us so far is that we're trying to play aggressive tennis. We have to be more selective." By selective Lauffer means better "per centage tennis" which in turn means playing for the best shot. At times it is better to play the base line instead of rushing the net and hitting a poor volley. Half the problem has been solved, due to the prevailing attitude of the team. "Their attitude has been great" Lauffer Alliance- 0 Davidson Josefowski Roosen Cheddar Davidson-Josef. Lauffer predicts a close match with the Cubs' cross town rivals. Gannon has only three courts instead of the usual six, so the four, five and six men are going to know exactly where the team stands, and exactly what they have to do. Obviously this puts more pressure on the players. In order to relieve some of the pressure, it would help to have a large Behrend turnout at the courts which are located on sth street behind the girls dorm. (That should be incentive enough). When it Rains When it rains it pours. An old cliche, but it seems to sum up the trouble Behrend is having in baseball this year. In the first game of the season, .the Cubs began by making errors, a problem which plagued them in their first six games. In the hitting department, they weren't doing so hot either. Then, sometime in the first game of a double header with Mercyhurst, at Mercyhurst, their bats came alive. Everyone began to stroke the ball better, but the Cubs still made too many errors that cost them the games.
