Cubs See Competition
For Diamond Positions
by Bud Ore
Staff Writer
Depth and versatility are the
two key factors that will deter
mine the success of the Behrend
baseball team this year. An
abundance of players at most of
the positions should make an
outstanding difference in their
play throughout the season. Add
to this fact that Coach Stoner is
boasting one of his finest pitching
staffs ever and you have the
making of a championship team.
Looking back on last season,
Stoner is optimistic about this
year's outlook. Last year the
Cubs sported a 6-14 record.
"We could have easily been .500
last season. In one of our first
games we were leading ten to five
going into the seventh inning and
we lost in extra innings. This
setback sort of set the tempo for
the season," he said.
To make up for the loss of
Roger Nolan, who was the man
with the big bat for Behrend last
year, Stoner is hoping that the
added strengh of John Marrucci
on the pitching staff will make up
for it. Marrucci had a good
season in the Glenwood league
this past summer and is expected
to be starter for the Cubs.
Also on the pitching staff is
returning pitcher Ray Fritts
whose record didn't look too good,
2-4, but he had an EBA. or 2.68.
Fritts did some outstanding
pitching last year but Cub errors
caused him to drop four
decisions. lie is also expected to
be a regular starter this season.
The Cubs also have a good
relief staff this year. Brad Bova
who is returning from last season
is a good left handed reliever.
Another pitcher at Behrend this
year is Tim Slaven, a right
hander who will probably play
some outfield when he isn't pit
ching. lie will most likely be the
main relief pitcher for the Cubs
this season.
"Tim is looking good with a bat
and he has a good arm" Coach
Stoner said.
Rounding out Behrend's pit
ching staff are John Farren,
Terry Solvedt, Lee Niedzwecki,
and Bill Sanders.
At the catcher slot, Behrend
has three candidates. They are
Jeff Cadden, who is returning
from last year, Jim Swaney who
is also returning, and Kevin
Campbell who is a Freshman that
hails from Fort Leßoeuf. All
three are hitting the ball well and
it is pretty much a toss up on who
the starting catcher will be.
At first base in Jim Davis,
another Freshman. Davis has
been having a good preseason bat
and will mest likely be a
designated hitter if the Cubs
choose to use one. Jack Weber is
also a possible candidate for the
spot but he will probably see
more action in the outfield. Jack
was one of the city's finest
fielding first baseman last
season. •
Second base has the most
competition this year to see who
gets the position. Presently there
are five players vieing for it.
Duane Zimmerman, who is the
only three year man Behrend has,
is on top of the list. He has in the
past. been a steady player and
last season hit a .250 average-
Also going out for the second base
slot is Lee Niedzwecki who has
had a good bat so far this year in
preseason practice. Rick Kestle,
a Freshman, has shown the good
glove and quiCkness that might
land him the job. Terry Solvedt
and Joe Spinelli are the other two
candidates for second base. Both
are quick and have' fairly good
bats.
At shortstop, Myles Johns
appears to have the job wrapped
up. He has good moves and a
quick glove, and he has been
hitting very consistently in
practice. Johns, who is returning
from last season also had a good
summer in Legion ball. Backing
him up will be Roger Schlosser,
who has been looking pretty good
at practice.
Third base is still up for grabs
between three players, Leon
Daniels, Larry McAleer and
Mickey Brocious. Both Daniels
and McAleer have good sticks
and are hitting the ball well and
will probably switch between the
outfield and third. Brocious has a
good glove and one of the best
arms on the team.
Choices for who plays the
outfield is still wide open. Both
Slaven and Marrucci will play
some when they're not pitching.
Jack Weber will see a lot of action
there, along with newcomer Wes
Br eghenti . Other outfielders
include Lonnie Lindemuth, who
was on the squad last year, Steve
Prokaopchak, and possibly Jeff

Cadden. Both Cadden and Lin

averages, respectively,
last season. Steve Motyka,
another returning player will also
see some action in the outfield
and possibly some relief pitching
as well.
Looking to Saturday's game
with Mercyhurst, Coach Stoner is
optimistic.
"We took them three out of four
times last year with basically the
same team. They haven't got
many new players and we've
strengthened our pitching sta:f so
we should beat them," he said.
As for the rest of the season
Stoner is equally optimistic "We
should be at least .500 or better.
We have more hitters that are
hitting better, and we are
probably more versatile than we
have ever been. The toughest
teams on the schedule will be
Slippery - Rbek, Edinboro, Point
Park, Allegheny, Youngstown
State and possibly Westminster"
he concluded.

For the session starting July. 1974.
Euromed will assist qualified Amer
ican students in gaining admission
to recognized overseas medical
schools.
And that's just the beginning.
Since the language barrier constitutes
the preponderate difficulty in succeed
ing at a foreign school, the Euromed
program also includes an intensive
12-16 week medical and conversa
tional language course, mandatory for
all students. Five hours daily, 5 days
per week (12-16 weeks) the course is
given in the country where the student
will attend medical school.
In addition, Euromed provides stu
dents with a 12-16 week intensive cul-•
tural orientation program, with Amer
ican students now studying medicine
in that particular country serving as
counselors.
Senior or graduate students currently
enrolled in an American university are
eligible to participate in the Euromed
program.
