elittrtb tart =:MI=E Cheech The Wizard's Creator Coshing Here For all of you sickies out there (please admit that you have a few loose shingles) the show you've been waiting for all year is coming to Behrend on Wed nesday, March 20. On that date, "National Lampoon" cartoonist Vaughn Bode will be bringing his weird presentation to our quiet, unassuming campus. "What is Bode's show, and what's in it for me?" you might ask. Would you believe that it's an underground cartoon concert? Well, believe it, Sherlock, 'cause that's what it is. Vaughn Bode not only presents slides of his characters, but he becomes their voices and personalities. Besides his National Lampoon Cub Forensic Ranked High Four members of the Behrend Forensic Union participated in the seventh annual California State College Individual Events Tournament, February 15 and 16. Representing Behrend were Cynthia Arnold, Debbie Vogt, Regina Gapinski and Craig Caldwell. Dr. Chaly and Miss Sargent accompanied the team and served as judges for the events. Twelve schools . representing six states participated in the seven events. The events included oral interpretation of poetry and prose, inpromptu and ex temporaneous speaking, original oratory, after dinner speaking and salesmanship. Behrend forensic participants matched wits with students from Bowling Green State University, Duquesne University, Ohio University, University of Maryland, Youngstown State University, Thiel College, Parkersburg Community College, Indiana State University, Geneva College, Frostburg State College, California State College and Bergen County Community College. Cindy Arnold, who participated in oral interpretation of prose and original oratory, secured one second place rating, one third, and four fourths. Debbie Vogt, also in prose and original oratory, secured one second place, two third places and three fourth place ratings. Snow has hit Behrend again! (at least last week anyway...). A battle of the dorms took place. Perry versus Niagara with Lawrence kids looking in on it. Who won? No one really knows, but rumors have it that the battle ended in a stalemate. Published by the students of the Behrend College, Pennsylvania State University feature, Bode's works include "Cheech Wizard", "The Man" and "Junk Waffles." He helped launch the first weekly un derground comic "The Gothic Blimp" and has a regular strip in "Cavalier" Magazine. Vaughn Bode's comic-strip universe is filled with habitually lecherous lizards, well-endowed sexually sophisticated females, and humanoid war machines. Bode has created over 1500 dif ferent characters in his fantasy works. Audiences have been en thusiastic with regards to this unique cartoon concert. Besides the cartoon concert itself, Bode converses with his audience after Union Members in Competition six fourth place ratings. Craig Caldwell competed in salesmanship, inpromptu, and extemporaneous speaking and rated eight fourth places and one third. Forensic participants are enrolled in Speech 301, a two credit course which may be repeated for a total of 24 credits. The course will be offered again Spring and Fall terms and anyone interested in the course or in forensics as an extracurricular activity should contact Dr. Chaly in North Cottage. The team hopes to attend one more tournament this season. It will be held at Frostburg State College in Frostburg, Md., on April 4th and 6th. Players ready For Next Show Before "The Drunkard" had even his last moments on stage, plans were going into effect for the Behrend Players' second production which will be presented during the Spring Arts. Festival. Tickets far the Vaughn Bode show are $l.OO with an activity card and $1.50 without a card. Sale of the tickets will begin after the term break. They may be obtained at the RUB Desk. Vaughn Bode's cartoon concert will take place in the RUB Lec ture Hall. This week's SUB movie is "Dirty Harry", starring Clint Eastwood. Showings will be on Saturday at 10 p.m. and Sunday at 7 and 9 p.m. Tickets are priced at 50 cents with an activity card and $1.25 without a card. Also applications are being accepted for the positions of Student Union Board treasurer, recreation chairman, hospitality chairman, and special events chairman. Applications may be obtained at the RUB Desk. Amendment Plac by Bud Ore Further discussion as to the amendment of the SGA con stitution was the main topic at Monday night's SGA meeting. After a lengthy debate between Jim Armstrong and some other members of. the SGA, it was decided to put the question of separating the secretary treasurer office into positions on the ballot for the students of Behrend College. Armstrong felt that the two offices should be split with the during Common Hour. Along with plans for the major production plans are being made to organize a series of three workshops which will also con tribute to the Arts Festival program. The groups will present work in the areas of Children's theatre, scene work, and ex perimental theatre. Anyone in Room be made available for study purposes on Friday night. They decided that this can be done between the hours of 7 and 11 p.m. with the understanding that reservations for student ac tivities, Continuing Education Workshops and other gatherings within that area may take priority. This idea met strong opposition from Darla Berkey, who- as the second vice president stated that the position had enough respon sibilities without adding the secretarial duties to it. In favor of splitting the office of the secretary-treasurer and making it a fifth office were Mike Chiricuzio and Vic Kopnitsky. The RUB Seminar Room will be available as a study area starting Friday, February 22. be enrolled in the new class with about 4,200 of them at University Park and the remainder, in cluding both associate and baccalaureate degree students, headed for the Commonwealth Campuses and Behrend College at Erie. Dr. Larson also said that new students scheduled to report on Sunday, March 10 to begin the Spring Term will be allowed to report on Monday, March 11, in those cases where Sunday travel conditions will present a problem. Thursday, February 21, 1974 artist Vaughn Bode will appear at Plan now to attend his "weird" On Ballot vote, all questions either go yes or no. With the fifth person on the board there would be the possibility of a tie and the chance for discussion would follow. The amendment as it now reads and which requires two more readings at the SGA meetings is as follows: "Article 111, Section I to read-Treasurer and Secretary, Article 111, Section 111, It‘m II to read Treasurer and Secretary, Article V Section VI Item I shall read, 1. Secretary shall be responsible for taking the minutes of the SGA meetings; 2. The Secretary shall aid the president in maintaining correspondence necesessary to the duties and responsibilities of the SGA." To pass, the amendment needs a two-thirds vote of the SGA and a majority of the students who vote. Also to be put on the ballot for the students will be the nominations for University Park faculty senate. Nominations will be open for all students currently enrolled at Behrend College and will be here during the 1974-75 academic year. Nomination forms will be available at registration at the SGA table. Students at Behrend will vote for a nominee to represent them in a commonwealth campus-wide election. The top two vote receivers from all the branch campuses will be senators to the University Park Faculty Senate. The third and fourth top vote receivers will be their alternates. The two senators will represent all the branch campuses. In other business plans were completed for a karate course to take place in Erie Hall. Classes will start March 14, and will be held every Tuesday and Thur sday from 7 to 9 p.m. The cost will be $2.00 per lesson. The problem of students that don't go to Behrend using Erie Hall was also discussed ,at Monday's meeting. Up until now security has been checking the gym occasionally. A proposal, was made to the effect that it might be possible every half hour. Other problems are that students that don't go to Behrend claim they don't have an I.D. and in turn get away with using the court.
