February 22,1973 SPORTS REPORTS Dinky’s Diary Captains of ships, business executives and scientists all have one thing in common. They keep records of different events which occurred throughout their working day. A captain of a ship will keep a log to record the conditions at sea. A business executive will keep memos to remind him what happened at which meeting. A scientist will keep a table to record his findings in the lab. These aren’t the only people who tabulate their events during the day. Others do so to record their enjoyment and sorrows. The type of data they keep is all together different from the people in the business world, for their data is only seen by them. They record their events in a small book or folder and usually no one else gets to read them. The book they write in is known as a diary. A diary is usually kept by girls so they can tell their well hidden secrets to someone without the words getting around. The type of diary you are about to see is not that of a little girl. It is one of the ten year old boy neamed Binky McLoje. He is the manager of a sandlot baseball team and he keeps a diary to record the incidents and cir cumstances that he faces. If it were to have a name, I’m sure it would be called “Diary of an Insane Manager.” Binky McLoje comes walking into the house, takes off his coat and throws it over the back of a chair. He goes into his room, flops down on the bed, reaches up to the book case and pulls out a small folder stuck between Swiss Family Robinson and Baseball Stars of Today. He takes a pen off of a desk and opens the folder very slowly. He ponders a moment and then begins to write. “Monday, April 6—Dear Diary, “Well it finally happened. Spring training is here at last. I no longer have to wait like I did all winter long. Everyone was as enthused as I was. Even though we haven’t played for over five months, all the guys look sharp. Everybody came back with the exception of one who joined the little league. “I looked over the roster and I liked what I saw. We seem like we've got good experience in every position. In left field we have the captain Birchie Bump, who is an inspiration to all. In center we have Timmy Trippup, a kid who makes easy plays look hard and intends on improving his already improved .133 batting average. In right field we have the strength of our team. This player should dominate the Better Ideas The all-night bowling party, sponsored by JRC was a smashing success, attended by approximately 100 people commuters and dorm students. Things are happening!! JRC will sponsor an ice-skating party at Glenwood Ice Rink, March 3, from 11 p.m. to 1 a.m. Prices will be $l.OO upon presentation of a PSU I.D. card. At this time, JRC. Class Leaders Meet Behrend’s five class presidents met on Tuesday, February 20 to discuss their common goals and interests concerning the students they represents. I don’t know if the other teams in the league would like it too much. The infield seems pretty well set as it’s anchored by our shortstop Moe Orless. He’s a fantastic fielder but has a little bit of a rubber arm. Today at practice we lost ten balls because he threw them too high or too wide. Once he even threw one over the backstop. But he’s improving anyway. “The rest of the infield is pretty well stable. Since I have the third base position nailed down, two guys are trying for the second base position. Freddie Fleetfoot, who runs about as fast as a deer and our little Chinese friend Lee Wong Shlong. Lee is a good fielder so I’m thinking of using him at second and Freddie as a pinch runner. “Duane DeTub has first base wrapped up and Doug Trench will be our catcher. Since the new rule of a designated pinch hitter has come into effect we obtained from the “Steel Street Stenches” a new player to act as our D.P.H. He is “Crazy” Kevin Kanatchie. He’s too looney to play in the field, but boy can he swing a bat! Our pitching staff is solid as ever. Led by Ronnie Raggarm we should be a real title contender this year. Ronnie led our staff last year with a five-and-four record, twelve strikeouts and a 13.4 earned run average, which was second in the league. If Ronnie ever gets in a jam, our star reliever Clyde “Cool Hand” Kolowski will step in. Clyde was our “fireman of the year" as he saved thirteen games lor us. He says his success is all due to his “sucker ball.” The ball travels so slow you usually get a chance to swing three times at it before it reaches the catcher. If you miss it all three times, you're out on strikes. This way Clyde doesn’t have to throw many pitches and the inning is over quicker. “Well, Diary, that’s about all for now. Mom’s telling me it’s time to go eat supper and I just covered everything on the team. I’ll let you know what happens at tomorrow’s practice. We’re going to have to practice hard because in two weeks we have our first exhibition game. “Oh ya, I almost forgot, tomorrow I-have a meeting with Birch. He said it has something to do with movin’ to a new field. The opposition proved too much as Wheeling belted the Cubs on Tuesday and Walsh College overpowered them on Saturday night. The two losses dropped* Behrend to 4-13 on the year. The Cubs left Erie on Tuesday afternoon confident that their road trip to Wheeling would be successful, since they had just come off their best showing of the season over Eisenhower 111 to 76. But their smiles turned to frowns as nothing seemed to go right. Second Annual Edinboro State College Ski Invitational held at Mt. Pleasant on Saturday, February 17. Gannon, Edinboro, Mercyhurst, Villa Maria, Allegheny, Alliance, St. Vincent’s, and Behrend were the colleges invited to compete in the giant slalom race. Craig Curtis and Mike Mashyna won plaques for second and third places, respectively, in the in dividual standings. Rick Peterman, A 1 Davis, and Bob Baginski placed well enough to enable Behrend to beat St. Vin cent’s and Gannon, who tied for second and Edinboro, who placed fourth. The trophy awarded can be seen in the trophy case in the gym. They outshot the over confident Cubs and found themselves ahead at the half, 45- 26. The second half showed more of the same, , even though Wheeling let the subs take over the final twenty minutes. Glenn McKinney was high man for the Cubs as he canned 12 points. Larry Szoszorek added nine and Denny Deiner hauled down 10 rebounds. Behrend was represented by five wrestlers. Why only five? Because to be eligible from Behrend our grapplers could not have participated in any other varsity matches. Representing Behrend were Mike Kerr —118, Dave Smith—l 26, Jeff Kahle — 134, Mark (Sunshine) Gillette — 142, and Gary Bokoch—lso, all of which were beaten in the first round except Mike. Dave Smith was leading and doing quite well against Bill Sample from Beaver who was second seated. Dave was riding crossbody on sample and went to turn him over and got trapped on his back and pinned. Tourney beaten by Cubs Keith Richardson. Jeff, who has been wrestling on torn cartilage since last November, couldn’t move as well as normal and was pinned. Sunny Gillette wrestled Keith Gourley from Dußois who is very experienced and also seated number one. Sunny shot one of the better single leg take downs of the tourney. Then Gourley shot a double* leg take down against Sunny who attempted to counter it but made the mistake of sliding his arm over Gourley’s head. Gourley then proceeded to pick up Sunny, set him down on his back and pin him. Gary Bokach wrestled Don Short from Dußois who has a record of 4-5 for the season and Gary was pinned in the second period. Behrend stayed close in the opening minutes of the contest but the more experienced Ohio crew began to build their lead and the Cubs fell to the wayside. Walsh held a 46-31 bulge at intermission and poured in 47 more in the secondhalf to the Cubs’ 28. Again, Glenn McKinney paved the way for Behrend as he scored 19 points. Denny Deiner added 17 and Szoszorek chipped in with 10. Deiner also led the Cub board attack with 12. matches, the first against Dave Kreider who was sth seated. Mike showed his efficiency in his match and won easily. His second match was with John Moser who was top seated. This match was exciting and interesting to fans as Mike and John battled for points. The final score was Mike 6 and John 5. In the semi-finals Mike wrestled Ernest Holsopple and Mike had an easy win. On to the finals in the 118 weight class and as the coach said, “At that point (Jim) Giunta was the only one ready to wrestle” Jim shot at Mike with 5 seconds to go and took him right down. Jim rode Mike crossbody but Mike had him on his back and in trouble several times but Giunta wouldn’t let go and refused to be pinned. In the last period Mike was on top and rode him. Giunta just laid on his belly and just would not be a good guy and roll over. Coach Onarato tried to tell the referee that Giunta was stalling but the ref must have been deaf or else he was ignoring Coach Onorato. This was the first time in the history of the tournament that we have ever lost the 118 weight class title and the first time in five years we have come home without a winner. Thursday, February 22, the Cubs travel to Malone in Canton Ohio, and will attempt to end this season as winners. They will!!!
