Page Four Ambassador Service Starts To Promote 4-Year Programs by Jeffery Holland Staff Writer Mr. Kenneth Goetz, Administrative Assistant in Academic Affairs, will act as Behrend’s ambassador to the other PSU commonwealth and community campuses to attract students in their Junior and Senior years to take advantage of Behrend’s new status as Behrend College of the Pennsylvania State University. Working with Mr. Goetz will be Mr. John Claridge, Assistant Director for Academic- Affairs, several faculty mem bers, and various upper class students. Goetz’s first mission was to Butler County Community College in Butler, Pa. With him was senior Liberal Arts and Science major, Michael Meyer, of Erie. Goetz presented to twenty five interested juniors and seniors there a variety of slides depicting the facilities and life style at Behrend College, as well as talks and discussions on the part of both Goetz and Meyer. The response, Goetz later reported, was enthusiastic. This program was attempted in 1971, but the response then was not heavy. Little was known about Behrend then, the four year programs were just in their development, stages, explained Goetz, but this has changed. Behrend is now well known in all parts of the University, and is becoming very popular. The projection for the number of transfer students to Behrend in the next couple of years is in the several hundreds, and even this is expected to be exceeded. Mr. Goetz is enthusiastic about the program. He feels that Behrend College has a lot to offer as an alternative to the massive impersonality of the main campus. Also, additions to the ad ministration staff will be a new academic dean, and several new division heads, in addition to twelve new faculty members. „ According to the Academic Policy Plan of the Pennsylvania State University, July, 1972, “the development of four-year programs at Behrend should focus on a limited number of broadbased, undergraduated majors that permit reasonable flexibility at the upper-division level and which simultaneously permit effective transfer of students among the campuses and from the community colleges. Behrend’s potential upper-division capacity will be assessed carefully and developed in accord with the University’s total upper-division com mitment.” This is phrased, ex plained Mr. Goetz, to give the administration maximum liberty in the planning and execution of Behrend’s future as a four-year institution.
