The Walker Award, created and funded by the former president of PSU and his wife Josephine, was established in 1970 to honor one outstanding Commonwealth Campus student. This award, given annually, will be presented in May of 1972 at University Park. Several steps are involved in selecting a candidate for the Walker Award. Each Com monwealth Campus selects one student from recommendations. The Behrend SGA selected not fewer than 2 and no more than 5 students as nominees for the award. These recommendations were then forwarded to the Behrend faculty Senate. The Senate selected from the SGA recommendations and other recommendations made by students and administration, no fewer than 5 and no more than 10 candidates. These names were presented to the final committee consisting of: Dr. Richard Tomsic, Assistant Professor of Psychology; A 1 Quinlan, SGA president; John Claridge, Assistant Director for Academic Affairs; and Benjamin A. Lane, Dean of Student Affairs. Lyons became the candidate from Behrend. Next, the University is divided into 4 regions. Each region selects one candidate. The regions are : 1. West Penn North Behrend Dußois Beaver Shenango Valley 2. West Penn South Award Lyons 3. Pocono 4. Piedmont The members and other can didates from the West Penn Region then met at Behrend to select the final candidate for that region. Lyons was ultimately selected for the award and will go to University Park with Lane, Kochel, and the three other candidates for the final selection in May. Lyons would like to thank his sponsors James and Marion Flaherty. He stated that he was surprised and “honored being nominated and considered for the award”, for he feels that there are other people that might be just as deserving as he. The award does not necessarily go to upperclassmen, but one basis for consideration is the activities in which the student has participated in his college career. Nominations for the Turnbull Walker Award can be made each Spring term by any officially chartered student, Behrend faculty, Behrend SGA, and Behrend Administration. Although there is no money involved in this award, it is one of the most elite awards any Penn State student can receive.
