Already the team has a 2-0 won lost record after defeating Ashtabula of Kent State University m Ohio and Shenango Valley Campus of Peim State. This turnaround could be indicative of the upcoming season. Herb Lauffer, tennis coach, commented that the team played well in the match against Ashtabula. It was a close match, being tied at 3-3 after singles. Behrend then went on to sweep doubles to win the match 6-3. Three outstanding performances were turned out by Bob McPhersen, Jay Baker and Joe Slievcliik who were singles winners. In their first home match, Behrend completely over powered their opponent, Shenango Valley by the score of 9- 0, sweeping both singles and doubles. Fans will get a chance to see many good matches this year. Next Tuesday Behrend will be host to Erie Community College of New York. Some of the best tennis of the area can be seen during the regional tournament to be held at Behrend on May 18,19 and 20. The best players of this region will then go to the National Junior College Athletic Associational National Tournament. This year’s team includes starters Bob McPherson, Jay Baker, Joe Shevchik, Jim Lyons, Jim Higgins, and A 1 Lopus. Other members include Jay Kossler, Bob Baginski, Bob Hicks, Rick Byerly, and John Long. Jim Kyle was also a member before being forced to retire because of in juries. One reason for the early success has been because of the good turnout of freshmen. Three freshmen have broken into the starting line-up; they include McPherson, Shevchik and Higgins. Depth is one asset to this years team and these freshmen have helped out tremendously. Depth has been lacking in the teams of recent years. Coach Lauffer is very op timistic about tills season and is looking forward to a successful one. He feels the team is off to a good start and is happy with their performance thus far this season. Starting off the Behrend swimmers was Jim Carrol who added to the cause with a second place in the 100 yard Freestyle, two seconds off the leader. Jim swam it at 56.39 seconds. Roger Rippens placed third in the 100 yard individual medley behind Belirend’s John Johnston’s second place in the event. In the 50 yard freestyle match Jim Von Kaehel and Jim Carrol finished second and third respectively, giving Behrend additional support toward their victory. In the diving competition, Mike Joyce ran away or should I say dove away with tlie championship with 69 points. The closest managed a mere 59 points. In the fierce competition of the 50 yard Butterfly Roger Rippens and Jeff Gallagher gave their all for the team effort. Roger finished fourth and Jeff came in seventh. In the 50 yard Backstroke Gary Maras swam to first place with an elapsed time of 27.89 while Rich Winkelman added to the cause placing third in the event. In the 50 yard Breaststroke Joe Fallon finished sixth in the event. The Behrend Campus swim mers excelled in the relay races, copping both of the first place prizes. In the 200 yard Medley Relay, the Behrend waterman set a record-breaking place finishing with the time of 1:54.99 three and a half seconds faster than the second best. Members of the 200 yard Medley Relay team are Rich Winkelman, John Johnston, Gary Maras, and Jim Vonkaenel. The fans also saw the 200 yard freestyle relay record broken by the Behrend tankers with the time of 1:39.09. The freestyle relaymen are comprised of Jim Vonkaenel, John Johnston, Roger Rippens and Jim Carrol. A total of eight records in nine categories were broken in this year’s edition of the Com monwealth Campus Swimming Meet held at University Park this past weekend with Behrend Campus walking away with three of those records. The BC netters drubbed Ashtabula-Kent 9- 0, for their first win of the infant season. I.M. Champions Sports In Two Since our last issue two champions have been crowned in I.M. sports. The Seven Faces of Dr. Liao took the top spot in volleyball and the Magnificent 7 proved true to their name by capturing the bowling cham pionship. The Seven Faces of Dr. Liao earned their title by going un defeated in a double elimination tournament which included the top two teams in the Dorm League (Highballers and Ist Floor Lawrence) and Commuter League (Seven Faces and the Faculty).
