Cubs Close Season
The Behrend Cubs closed out their 1971-72 season on a
winning note as they downed the Altoona team 108-91. The
Cubs hope for a Commonwealth Championship were
dashed by a strong Beaver team on the opponents home
court.

After two years of dominating
the Commonwealth Campus
Wrestling Tournament, the
matmen of Behrend were forced
to take a back seat to Shenango
Valley and runner-up Dußois.
The new kings of wrestling,
Shenango Valley, had a total of 90
points, followed by Dußois with
72, and Behrend with 40.
Going into the finals Shenango
and Dußois looked like they were
heading for a real dogfight, as
they both had six in the finals. But

emerged as champions too as
they ran away with the first place
trophy.
Behrend had two champions,
Julio DiMarco (118 lb) and Paul
Jazenski (117 lb). As usual, the
duo was the only bright spot of
Behrend's weekend.
Also earning points for the Cubs
were Larry Fabrizi, (3rd place),
and Tom Staczewski (4th place).
Stacz also gave Coach Ed
Onorato a little bit of exercises
during his first match. Tom was
ahead of his opponent 10-2 in the
second period but fell behind 11-10
at the end of the match. The
referee indicated Stacz's op
ponent as the winner. Onorato, not
well known for keeping his
temper, exploded on the mat and
demanded riding time for Stacz.
After a few minutes of ex
changing verbal complaints, the
referee checked the clock and
gave Stacz one point which tied

The Behrend Campus
basketball team saw its cham
pionship hopes go down the drain
last Wednesday when they
traveled to Beaver and were
defeated 91-71. The Cubs hosted
Altoona on the Erie Hall boards
on Saturday in the season's con
cluding contest and came out on
top 108-91. Coach Roger Sweeting,
in his first season back at the
Behrend helm after a two year
absence, led his Cubs to a 13-7
overall mark and an 8-2 con
ference record.
Behrend invaded Beaver on
Wednesday and came up with a
cold shooting night and a hot
shooting Stan Coleman for the
Beavers. Coleman netted the
Beavers first eight points of the
contest. The big center ended the
first half with 29 markers and led
his team to a 54-47 halftime lead.
The Cubs were close during the
opening canto and got off to a 6-2
lead at the 18:40 mark. That was
to be it for the Cubs as Coleman
and company went to work. At the
the match. Stacz then won in
overtime.
The remainder of the squad,
Bob Newcombe, John Hotchkiss,
Dale Watazychyn, and Mike Deeb
were eliminated in early com
petition. Mike Kerr and Tom
Tylman did not compete in the
tourney due to injuries.
The Founder of Behrend
Wrestling, Coach Onorato had
this to say after the tournament.
"We didn't wrestle well at all.
In the past the wrestlers who
started off slow would usually
improve and score points for us in
the tournament. It wasn't the
case this year."
Only the Regional Tournament
lies ahead for Coach Onorato, as
the season draws to a close. It will
be held this Friday and Saturday
at Montgomery College, Rock
ville, Maryland. Only DiMarco
and Jazenski will compete.

The second half saw the scoring
dwindle for both squads as
Behrend could muster only seven
field goals. Beaver carded 16
fielders and added five charity
tosses which gave them a 39-24
second half edge. At one streak in
the final period the Cubs went five
minutes without scoring a single
point. Meanwhile Beaver dented
the nets for 13 markers and for all
purposes the ball game was over.
Coleman led the Beaver scorers
with 39 points followed by Jan
Bentley's 24 and Wally Moore's

in double figures as Glenn
McKinney had 23 and Denny

Saturday saw the Cubs end
their season on winning note by
defeating Altoona. The Cubs took
a slim four point margin, 54-50,
with them into the locker room.
The contest was close with score
50-48 with a minute left when
Glenn McKinney and Ike Burnett
hit for buckets giving.them their
four point lead. Altoona came
back in the second half and even
held a slim one point margin 81-80
at the eight minute mark. Then
Tom Kozesky and McKinney went
to work combining for 10 of 12

Jazenski (177 lb division)
registered 2 pins, and decisioned
previously undefeated Moore of
Shenango in overtime 4-2.
These two broke 4 records this
year, as they dominated the
Behrend wrestling scene. Julio, at
one point, held the record with six
consecutive wins, only to have it
broken by Paul with eight.
DiMarco's 11 wins in one season
shattered the previous record of
eight, while Jazenski's 16-3
lifetime slate is the best ever in
Behrend wrestling history. Quite
a performance.
Out of Paul's 10 wins, six were
via the pin and Julio pinned three
of his twelve opponents.
Coach Onorato had much
praise for the dynamic duo.
"DiMarco and Jazenski are
without a doubt the best wrestlers
I have ever coached. Julio never
lets up on his opponents and just
runs them down. He just doesn't
know how to lose.
Paul has a tendency to never
give up. He has always come
back whenever he was in
trouble."
When wrestling on a team with
many losses it is a fantastic feat
for DiMarco (11-1) and Jazenski
(10-1) to come out of it as winners.
The duo will end their season as
representatives of Behrend in the
Regional Tournament this Friday
and Saturday. _
