The Behrend Campus cagers
traveled to Dußois and Fayette
over the weekend and returned
with a victory and a defeat to
show for their efforts. On Friday
the Cubs were hosted by the
Dußois campus and came away
with a 78-60 win. Behrend was
sluggish at the start as Dußois'
aggressive man-for-man defense
seemed to bother the Cubs.
However, Behrend soon got un
tracked and - owned a 40-33 half
time edge. The second half was
more of the same as Behrend
coasted home with a 78-60 vic
tory. Coach Sweeting praised
Dußois for their agressiveness
and hustle but Behrend's zone
press that they employed the
entire game was too much for the
losers to handle. Glenn McKinney
drilled the nets for 23 followed by
Ike Burnett's 15 to lead Behrend
scoring. Nardozza, Majeski, and
Schutz had 39 points combined to
lead the losers.
On Saturday the Cubs jour
neyed to Uniontown to face
Fayette Campus who are the
defending commonwealth
cainpus Champions. Fayette
featured a front line consisting of
players 6'6", 6'4", and 6' 2" with a
6'2" man possessing ex
traordinary leaping ability. The
first half was close as the two
powers traded buckets at an even
pace with Fayette leading 52-51 at
the half. Bud Patton was the
major offensive thrust as he
nailed 20 points mostly on 20 foot
corner bombs. The Cubs em
ployed a zone defense with no
press the entire first half while
Fayette used a man for man. The
second half was even until the
four-minute mark when Behrend
was forced out of their zone
trailing 84-79. The Cubs were

forced to try for the ball or foul
and the latter was the case as
Fayette dropped the free throws
through the hoop to put the game
safely away for the hosts.
Coach Sweeting felt that the
first half was the best 20 minutes
of basketball his charges have
played all season. He was. also
pleased over the four players in
double figures. (see box score).
McKinney led the scoring with 27
followed by Denny Deiner with 22.
Sweeting believes that had the
game been played on a neutral
court or at home, the outcome
would have been different. The

In ti eir season opener, the Girls
Basketball team fell to a tall and
talented Slippery Rock
Independents 38-32. Sherry
Thigpen shook the nets with 18
points for Behrend, but it wasn't
enough as the Independents
dominated the boards and pulled
off a six-point win.
Coach Melody Laudensack also
had praise for Behrend's
workhorse under the boards, Sue
Cray. "Sue played a fantastic
game underneath, despite the
fact that Slippery Rock had three
girls taller than her. It was a fine
effort."
A possible rematch is currently
being planned between Behrend
and Slippery Rock, a team made
