Behrend Collegian
by Tom Harvey
Sports Reporter
Since the last edition of the
Behrend Collegian, the Behrend
Campus hoopsters have played
six games and own two victories
and four defeats bringing the
season mark to 3-5. The Cubs
journeyed to Jamestown, N. Y. to
face Jamestown Community
College on December 1. The Cubs
came away with an exciting 85-
84 win.. Glenn McKinney, as he
has for every game this season,
led all Cub scorers with 34 points.
December 4 was the day for the
Cubs home opener and Allegheny
Community College South
provided the opposition. Behrend
defeated Allegheny South 92-59.
The Cubs led the entire contest
with McKinney's amazing 32
points and this win was to be the
last Cub win in 1971.
The following week on the 11th,
Allegheny Community College,
Boyce Campus, invaded Erie
Hall and departed the conquerors
-with a 105-82 decision. Boyce's
height Int their front line spelled
the difference in their victory.
McKinney led the Cub scorers
with 34 points. Taylor led the
Boyce squad with 32 points. On
December .15, Erie Hall was the
scene for the entertaining of
Alleghany Community College.
The visitors obviously had not
been schooled in etiquette, as
they virtually destroyed the Cubs
142-97. The Cougars were a fast
breaking, ball-hawking
team that dominated play at both
ends of the floor. The Cougars
showcased four players who
riddled the nets for over 20 points.

led all scores with 41 and Denny
Deiner added 16 in a losing cause.
To finish the 1971 portion of the
schedule Erie County College
visited Behrend and went home
with a 103-71 verdict. Calvin
Murphy the 6'B" pivotman for
Erie was the major factor in the
New Yorker's win.
The Cubs traveled to Lorain,
Ohio, to play Lorain Community
College on January 8. Lorain,
spearheaded by Martin and
Young, (23 and 20 points
respectively), destroyed the Cubs
99-64. McKinney and Deiner led
the Cub attack with 24 and 17.
Coach Roger Sweeting stated
five factors that are causing
Behrend's present losing skein.
The primary problem is the lack
of size. Four of the five losses
were against teams that
d pivotmen who were at
possessed
This factor combined
with the fact that the Cubs are not
real quick presents a- problem
when facing. bigger teams. Other
factors mentioned by Sweeting
were: Lack of experience, lack of
scoring balance, and top-flight
opposition.
On Wednesday the Cubs travel
to New Kensington in the opening
game of the commonwealth
campus portion of the schedule.

This Saturday evening at 8:00
p.m. the Cubs will host visiting
McKeesport in a crucial com
monwealth campus contest.
Coach Sweeting feels the Cubs
are now over the hardest part of
the schedule and promises that
"there will be no more lopsided
games and went as far as to say
that he'd be disappointed if the
Cubs lose another games."
