Grapplers Ready
For Big Effort

The 1971-72 edition of the
Behrend wrestling team is
heading for the last big push
before their season opener
December 3 at Edinboro. Thus
far, Coach Ed Onorato has been
whipping his chargers into shape
and working on individual
wrestling techniques_ But the
hard working grapplers will be
spending the next two weeks
perfecting their moves, staying
away from the cafeteria, and
keeping the weight down.
Coach Onorato received a bit of
bad news this week, as two
probable starters are out of
action indefinitely. Larry
Gladora will go under the knife
soon because of a knee injury. He
may be back later in the year and

Mark Hedges is off the squad for
failing to get? haircut.
Hedges' absence will be felt
severely, as the former Com
monwealth Campus Champ is a
determined, hardworking
competitor. Mark is a
naturalborn leader and it's a
shame that hair has to be a factor
in determining the status of an
athlete.
Bright spots for Coach Onorato
are Ted Ward (150 lb.) and John
Hotchkiss (158 lb.) "These two
have had no previous wrestling
experience but they are shaping
up well and seem to have a
natural instinct for wrestling."
There are 11 men remaining on
the squad and depth will
definitely be a problem. But
Coach Onorato still has plenty of
talent and experience. With co
captains Paul Jazenski and Tom
Staszewski forming . the nucleus,
the squad should go far and win
more than its share of games.
The remainder of the squad
included: Bob Newcomb, Denny
Steadman, Larry Fabrizi, Julio
Demarco, John Clancy, Tom
Tillman, and Mike Deeb.
The spirit is sky-high and the
upcoming scrimma .6 ges with
Lakeland Community College and
Alliance should give a better
indication on what to look forward
to.

Behrend basketball fans should
be in for an exciting season this
year, if the Cubs continue to be as
impressive as they have been in
pre-season action. Under the
watchful eye of Coach Roger
Sweeting the Behrend cagers
scrimmaged Edinboro freshmen
andsaccording to both coaches the
contest was even.
"I was quite pleased with the
way we handled Edinboro's
pressure defense," commented
Sweeting. "although we did give
up the ball on occasion, we got
quite a few fast break baskets as
a result of beating their press.
They're not a particularly big
team and the teams were
relatively evenly matched size
wise. Overall it was a good, even
scrimmage."
Once again Glenn McKinney
had a fine performance in leading
the hoopsters against the Scot
frosh. Sweeting stated: "Overall
Glenn McKinney did a good job of
handling the ball against the
press. He and Steve Johnson are
working at the guards and they
did a good job together. Joe
Olzewski came off the bench and
did a tremendous job. He made 11
out of 13 field goals and we have
great hopes for Joe. We think that
although he lacks some of the
high school experience that
others have, he could come on
strong before the season is over
and play a lot of basketball for
us."
Coach Sweeting's philosophy of
basketball should make for
numerous exciting nights of hoop
action_ He feels that "pressure is
the name of the game." Sweeting
plans on using a fast break type of
offense and a man for man

pressure the other team into
giving up the ball. Offensively we
feel we have to get the ball and
get it down the court and get a
shot before the other team gets
five defenders down the court. As
much as possible we're going to
try and fast break. We have some
continuity offenses where we try

The Trojan Rubber Company, the
only _team to beat every team
they played. From the beginning
of the season they were un
derdogs. Coach Clarence Stoner
didn't think they had the
championship team in the
beginning, yet laterhe ate his hat.
They looked impressive from
there highly organized huddles to
the Dallas Cowboy Pro-set to the
offensive formations.
The team averaged over 25
points a game with the opponent
having less than 15. On offense, at
left end George Frola caught 3
TD passes with many short
gainers. At starting at center
Kent Ryan grabbed 2 TD tosses
and several screen passes. The
outstanding tackle was Denny
Pa ttyn with 7 touchdown
receptions, leading the running
game was half-back Keith
"Flash" Lustig averaging close
to 100 yards a game towards the
end of the season with Dan "Big
D" Trisilo running strong up the
middle. Rounding out the team
was Al Lopus at quarterback with
13 touchdown passes. He also had
the longest run from scrimmage,
running 65 yards for a touchdown.
On defense Will Everhard and
Art Sprague put on the killing
rush with Pete Houghton, Ted
Kull, and Bill Remley (High
School all conference-honorable
mention) at linebackers. The

During the Championship game
against the Bud Brigade, the
Trjojan Rubber Company defense
returned 4 interceptions from
Dave Reuf for touchdowns, two
by Pattyn, one by Lustig and one
by Art Sprague. One reason was
because of the strong rush from
Will Everhard and Bill Remley.
By the middle of the second half
the T.R.C. jumped to an im
pressive 36-6 lead. With victory in
sight the great defense slackened
and the Bud Brigade rallied for 2
touchdowns before the final gun
sounded with the final score 36-18.
The Trojan Rubber Company
had emerged as the unquestioned
champs. It was an exciting season
for all participants and fans.
