Penn State Challenges
A Rugged West Virginia
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.,
October—Pen State and West
Virginia, the top two football
teams in the East, collide head-on
Saturday (Oct. 30) in Morgan
town, W. Va.
A capacity crowd of more than
37,000 is expected at ancient
Mountaineer Field for the game
between the homestanding
Mountaineers (6-1) and the
Nittany Lions (6-0). Kickoff is
1:30 p.m., Eastern Daylight
Time.
West Virginia will try to end a
15-year win drought against the
Nittan l y Lions. The Mountaineers
haven t beeaten Penn State since
1955. The series started in 1904
and stands 28-7-2 in favor of Penn
State.
"West Virginia has a very fine
football team," says Penn State
coach Joe Paterno. "They have
great team speed and have
thrown the ball very well."
Bernie Galiffa, a senior, leads
the West Virginia attack. Califfa
has completed 71 of his 132
passing attempts for 828 yards
and five touchdowns and has
added another 57 yards and three
scores on the ground.
The team rushing leader is
sophomore Kerry Marbury, who
carried 22 times for 291 yards in
last week's win over Temple. A

has averaged 6.8 yards per carry
with 797 yards in 116 rushing
attempts.
Pete Wood, the Mounties'
regular fullback, is not expected
to play due to a rib injury. He is
replaced in the lineup Jy. 225-
pound junior Brian Chiles, a
junior college transfer.
Sophomore split end Harry
Blake has been Galiffa's favorite
receiver. Another speedster,
Blake had an 83-yard touchdown
play last week against Temple.
He now has caught 23 passes for
282 yards and two touchdowns on
the season. Tight end Nate
Stephens and flanker Chris Potts
each have 13 receptions so far
this year.
Penn State will counter with
one of the nation's most potent
offenses.
The lions are averaging 566.1
yards and 42.5 points perame.
They are also among the national
leaders in rushing offense,
rushing defense and scoring
defense.
Halfack Lydell Mitchell has
been the statistical standout for
the Lions. The 200-pound senior
has gained 837 yards in 131
carries and has scored 14 touch
downs, tying the Penn State
season record set by Charlie
Pittman in 1968.
"Mitchell has to be considered
a strong candidate for the
Heisman Trophy," Paterno says.
"He is breaking all of our records
and he is doing it without
carrying the ball the number of
times that some of the other guys

Franco Harris, the Lion's 220-
pound senior fullback, is in fourth
place on the Lions' all-time
rushing list with 1,697 yards.
Harris returned to form with, 104
yards against TCU last week
after being hampered for several
weeks with a rib injury. He has
gained 397 yards this season.
Quarterback John Hufnagel
has accounted for 818 yards in
total offense. The lanky junior
has rushed for 269 yards and
completed 37 of his 66 passes for
549 yards.
Tight end Bob Parsons, a 6-4,
236-pound senior, is the top
receiver for the Lions. Parsons, a
converted quarterback, has 14
receptions for 281 yards and two
touchdowns.
The Lion defense came up with
another strong performance in
the 66-14 rout of TCU last week.
The defense has given up only 45
points in six games this year and
no team has been able to score on
the ground against the Lions.
Gary Gray, the opportunistic
inside linebacker, has been s
standout. The 208-pound senior
has four interceptions, four
funble recoveries and is the team
leader in tackles with 58.
The Lions have also been
getting outstanding defensive
play from linebacker Charlie
Zapiec, end Bruce Bannon and
tackle Jim Heller.
Upsets Highlight Week;
Intramural Football Games

This week was a bad week for
the undefeated teams in in
tramural football. Three (3)
teams who were previously
undefeated before this week have
all. been upset. First to fall was
the faculty, who lost to the
Mystics, and then the Perry
Esquires upset the Bud Brigade
in a tough overtime game.
Lastly, the Commuting Com
mando overturned the Trojan
Rubber Company in a close 4-3
contest. Currently, both dorm
and commuter leagues are
knotted up in a close, exciting
finish.
In the dorm league the Trojan
Rubber Company is tied with the
Mystics in losses, but the Mystics
still have a tough game vs. the
Woman's Viewpoint
Strategic Kick-off

You may find this hard to
believe, but the game of football
involves more than rum and coke.
How much more, I'm not really .
sure. But neither are the football
players.
Football is actually a very
simple game. There are two
teams of eleven men -each, two
goals at opposite ends of a striped
field and one ball. The object of
the game is to grab the ball and
run all the way to the other
team's goal and make a touch
down. Simple. But - the guys
decide to confuse the game with
all kinds of penalties, signals and
formations so that we co-eds
wouldn't be able to understand.
The trouble is that not many guys
can understand it either.
Right now, I'd like to tell you
about the most foolish part of the
game - the beginning. The game
is started with a kickoff, which
Bud Brigade.
The commuting league is in the
same situation. Both the Bud
Brigade and the Commuting
Commandos have one loss
leaving the Brigade with a season
game left.
Attendance has been a large
factor at the games. Trouble has
arisen, however, because the
fans are crowding along the side
of the field during, the games.
This makes it very difficult for a
teams' organization of sub
stitutes. It would be appreciated
if these fans would stay within the
standing room only zones. When
asked about bleachers for this
fastly growing sport, Coach
Clarence Stoner, who won't
admit he got his hair cut, didn't
make any promises.

happens something like this: The
kicking team lines up across the
field. The other team is spread
suspiciously over its half of the
field. While' everyone gapes at
him, the kicker picks his favorite
spot in the grass to place a tee.
He then places the ball on the tee,
and after considerable theatrics,
he proceeds to kick the ball.
Well, by now, the whole world
knows what he plans to do! When
he finally kicks the ball, the other
team is so prepared that they
catch the ball before the kicker
has time to get his kicking foot
back in non-kicking position.
Just like the strategy used by
the British in the Revolutionary
War. They wore bright red coats,
stood out in the open, and then
wondered why they lost. Really,
now...we women know the only
way you win in love and-or war is
by being very, very subtle.
Too bad the guys haven't
learned this yet.
Well, fans, excitement is
mounting, so come down to the
Behrend Arena for the greatest
football on campus. Cham
pionship game is scheduled for
Wednesday. November 3, so well
see you there.
