Intramural Teams
Continue Action
This year the Behrend
Intramural flag-football program
has gotten off to an exciting start,
boasting an eleven (11) team
lineup. This line-up includes 6
tough dorm teams, 4 rugged
commuting teams and featuring a
well rounded faculty team.. This
is the second week of competition
among the teams and Mr. Stoner,
flag football organizer, seems to
think the outstanding teams this
year are the Mystics from 3rd
floor Lawrence and the Bud
Brigade made up of commuters;
however, early statistics also
indicate the Trojan Rubber
Company from 2nd floor
Lawrence might have cham
pionship potential as a team. The
championship game is scheduled
for November 3 and will feature
the winners of the Dorm and
Commuting League.

Sadly enough however, due to the
large attendence at the games,
seating space is very . crowded so
most of the audience has to stay
in the standing room only areas.
Schedules are being distributed

Penn State and Syracuse will
renew one of college football's
best rivalries on Saturday,
October 16. •
A capacity crowd of ap
proximately 42,000 is expected at
Archbold Stadium in Syracuse,
N.Y. for the 49th game in a series
that started in 1922. Kickoff is at
1:30p.m.
Syracuse spoiled Penn State's
Homecoming Day celebration
last year with a 24 - 7 victory at
Beaver Stadium. The Lions will
have the opportunity to even the
score. Saturday's game is the
feature of Syracuse's
Homecoming Weekend.
Penn State and Syracuse have
played every year since 1922 with
the exception of the 1943 season.
The Nittany Lions hold a slim 22 -
21 edge in victories. There have
been five ties.
Penn State will come into this
year's game with a 4 - 0 record
sporting victories over Navy,
lowa, Air Force and Army.
Syracuse is 2 - 1 - 1 on the season.
The Orange tied Wisconsin and
lost to Northwestern before
victories over Indiana and
Maryland the last two weeks.
"Syracuse has been playing
very good defensive football and
has shown the ability to come
from behind," says Penn State
coach Joe Paterno.
The Orange drove the length of
the field in the last quarter to
earn the 20 - 20 tie with Wisconsin
and scored twice in the fourth
period last week to beat
Maryland, 21 - 13.
"That fourth quarter against
Maryland was really
something," says Penn State
scout John Rosenberg.
"Syracuse took the play away
from Maryland and controlled
the football."

The game figures to be a battle
of ground games. The Orange
rely on a strong running game
with fullback Marty
Januszkiewicz and tailback
Roger Praetorius doing most of
the heavy work. Penn State will

Franco Harris.

fensive hero in last year's 24 -
victory over the. Nittany Lions.
The 212-pound junior carried 36
times for 153 yards and two
touchdowns.
Praetorius has been the leading
rusher for the Orange so far this
season with 282 yards, but
Januszkiewicz bulled for 91 yards
against Maryland last week and
now has 195 yards for the season.
Syracuse also has passed the
ball effectively in its last two
games. Quarterback Bob
Woodruff has completed 37 of his
66 passing attempts for 465 yards
and two touchdowns. Split end
Gary Sweat has six receptions for
119 yards.
The Syracuse defense is led by
safetyman Tom Myers and
middle guard Ted Lachowicz.
Myers had three interceptions
against the Lions last year and
contributed a 37-yard punt return
that set up a score. He already
has four interceptions this season
and holds the Syracuse career
record with 14 steals.
The Penn State attack has been
built on the running of Mitchell
and Harris. State passed for 244.

„UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa., Oct.
Penn State's cross country
team upset Villanova, the
defending NCAA and ICAAAA
champions, on the strength of
outstanding team work and
senior Greg Fredericks' first
place finish.
A cross country and outdoor
-track All-American last season
Fredericks finished some - 100
yards in front of the Wildcats'
premier distancemen Marty
Liguori and 1970 ICAAAA
champion Donald Walsh.
Fredericks who edged Walsh in
the 1968 ICAAAA freshman
championships, earned All-
American honors last year with a
fourth place finish in the NCAA
meet. He also was second in the
ICAAAA and fourth in the USTFF
championships.
During the outdoor track
season, Fredericks won both the
three-mile and six-mile titles at
the ICAAAA meet and placed
second it, the NCAA three-mile to
gain track All-American
recognition.
Lion coach Harry Groves also
was pleased with the per
formance of sophomore Charlie
Maguire, who finished fourth.
"To beat Villanova we had to
gang up on them,” said Groves.

but more than half of that total
came on passes of 62 and 64 yards
after the_ Lions had built a 21 - 0
lead. -
Mitchell rushed for 161 yards
against Army, marking the third
time this season and the ninth
time in his brilliant career the
Salem, N.J., native has sur
passed the 100-yard mark in a
game.
The 161-yard effort against
Army gives Mitchell 566 yards
this season and 1,933 yards for his
career. He is third on Penn
State's all-time rushing list
behind Lenny Moore (2,380) and
Charlie Pittman (2,236).
Harris, who has been ham
pered by minor injuries the last
two weeks, has gained 256 yards
in the first four games for a
career total of 1,574. He is - fourth
on the career rushing list.
Paterno expects to go with the
same lineups that started the
Army game. Offensive guard
Carl Schaukowitch, who missed
the contest with a leg injury, is on
the doubtful list again for
Saturday.
"We - had to get someone ahead of
their All-American Wilson Smith
and Maguire came through."
The Lions, a youthful team last
season, will have the top five
scorers from last year's Kent
State meet in the lineup Satur
day.
Jim Allahand of Trevose and
Gary Gittings and Bob Hillman of
Pittsburgh return in addition to
Maguire and Fredericks who won
last year's race.
At the time of this writing, the
Baltimore Orioles lead the Pitt.-
sburgh.Pirates two games to one.
I think the Orioles will go on to
win the World Series. The
Robinson boys, big Boog, Mery
Rettenmund and four 20-game
winners, form the best team in
baseball.
In the first game, Dave
McNally flipped a 3 hitter, as
Baltimore topped the Bucs 5-3.
All three Pirate runs were
unearned, thanks to the sloppy
play of Belanger and McNally.
Doc Ellis was ineffective. Two
bad pitches to Frank Robinson
and Mery Rettenmund cost Ellis
the game.
=IMMIIIINIMM
Game two was a farce.
Baltimore humiliated the Pirates
11-3 Pittsburgh's relief pitching
was abominable, as Bruce Kisson
and Bob Veale walked Oriole
pitcher, Jim Palmer, with the
sacks filled. The only excitement
for the Buc fans was Hebner's
home-run.
Game three was all Steve
Blass. Blass who looked bad
against.the Giants in the playoff,
pitched a masterful 3-hitter. His
only mistake was a home-run
pitch to Frank Robinson. Bob
Robertson once again came
through with a big 3-run home
run to put the game on ice.
But when it's all said and done,
the Orioles will repeat as World
Champions. If I'm wrong I will
apologize to all the Buc fans in
next week's article. -
