Erie County Wins Tourney; Behrend Takes Second Place by Tony Alo Reporter Erie Commuiity College of Buffalo, New York defeated Behrend 5-1 to win the Behrend Invitational Soccer Tournament last Saturday afternoon. Most valuable• player, Tom Schratz:, slammed 3 goals for the winners while Scot Larsby and Robin Muchow managed one apiece. . _ Bob Jeffery scored the lone tally for Behrend as the Cubs could manage only thirteen shots against the stiff Erie defense. Behrend goalie, Ed Moore, turned in a fantastic per formance as he turned away 17 Erie shots. Most of the game was played at the Behrend end of the field as Erie flooded the Cub's goal with 42 shots. Only great defensive efforts by Mike Marsh and Mike Joyce kept Behrend in the game. Behrend was hindered by the fact that Jim Channus, the Cub's captain and last year's top scorer, did not play in the game. Jim suffered a fractured wrist in the Lakeland game. Behrend reached the cham pionship game with a 5-2 victory over Lakeland Community College of Mentor, Ohio in the onening round. The Cubs scored in every period as captain Jim Channus hit for two goals. Bill Hilden brand, Denny Grace, and Chris Moore each added a score for the winners. John Hoge ended the scoring with three assists and Bob Jef fery added two as Behrend took thirty-nine cracks at the goal. The Behrend defense blanketed the Onions as they only took 9 shots with Ed Moore saving 7 at the Cub's goal. Chris Harrol and Tom Snodgrass accounted for the 2 Lakeland goals. The Lakes' goalie, Scott Adams, turned in a fine performance in defeat as he blocked twenty-two Behrend shots. In the other first round game, champion Erie Community College ran all over Slippery Rock J.V. 10-2. Tom Schratz was the offensive giant for the Kats as he drilled a record six goals. Rick Ramely, Jim Trowbridge, Robin Muchow,- and Mike Kuper each had a goal to complete the rout over the hopeless Rockets. C. Shall and Eric Vanderhengel prevented the shutout with 1 goal apiece for the losers. The consolation contest was an exciting affair with Slippery Rock squeezing by Lakeland 4-3 as Tom Zagorski belted the Lauffer Plans Strategy winning goal with only 2 seconds year. to play. Behrend Collegian Behrend Faces Rough Altoona The Behrend soccer team will play one of the biggest, most important games of the year against the Altoona Campus of the Penn State University, on Saturday, October 9. During the past few years, Behrend and Altoona have been the leading powers in the Commonwealth Campus tournaments, and this year it still looks the same in that respect. This year Altoona will be led by Captain Bob Stevens who is a sophomore. Stevens is one of the five returning starters from last year's team. The balance of the team is mostly freshmen, but all have had at least two years of soccer in high school.
